3 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gate closers and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a gate closure including novel and improved means for permitting the gate on which the same is applied to be opened in only one direction.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a gate attachment that will automatically pivot to a closed position after the same has been opened.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an attachment for gates and other hinged elements including novel and improved anchoring means whereby the same may be quickly and readily applied to or removed from the gate in a minimum time.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a gate closer that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevational view of a metallic gate construction showing the present invention applied thereon;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1, and with parts of the present gate closer broken away and shown in section;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the gate engaging member used in conjunction with the present invention;
Figure 5 is a plan view of a wooden gate construction showing the present invention applied thereon and with parts of the gate structure shown in section, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the supporting member used in conjunction with the present invention when applied to a wooden gate structure.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is dis closed a preferred emodiment of the present invention, the numeral It] represents a metallic gate frame that is suitably hinged to a metallic post ll of a suitable fence I4 having an upper rail [6. Removably engaging the rail [6 is the bifurcated end l8 of an arcuate, substantially semi-circular, tubular guide 20 of rigid material. The opposite open end 22 of the guide is spaced opposite the upper cross bar 24 of the gate frame l0;
Positioned in the tubular guide 20, is a coil spring 26 having one end fixed to a fastener 28 removably carried by the guide adjacent its bifurcated end IS. The free end 30 of the spring is rigidly secured to an eye element 32 that engages a bifurcated member 34 rigidly carried by the web portion 36 of a yoke 38, and is pivoted thereto by a fastener 40. This yoke embraces the cross bar 24 and is removably secured thereto so that the bifurcated member 34 opposes the open end of the guide.
In practical use of the device, when the gate is pushed inwardly toward the open end of the guide, the web portion 36 of the yoke will engage the open end of the guide, thus preventing pivoted movement of the gate in one direction. When the gate is pivoted outwardly, in an opposite direction, the spring 26 will be in tension to close the gate when the same is released.
Reference is now directed to Figures 5 and 6, wherein there is shown the manner in which the present gate closure is applied to a wooden gate. In this embodiment, the numeral 42 represents the vertical standard or post of a fence 44 that hingedly supports a gate 46 having a vertical wooden side portion 48.
Secured to the outer opposite faces of the post 42 and the side portion 48, are the flanged base portions 50 of a pair of sleeves 52 that respectively engage the bifurcated end [8 of the guide 20 and the yoke 38 for similar operation of the guide and spring as that previously described.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A gate closer comprising a tubular guide having a bifurcated terminal engaging a fence rail, an elongated resilient member having one end fixed in said guide adjacent the bifurcated terminal thereof, the free end of said resilient member extending from said guide, and an attaching yoke carried by the free end of said resilient member engaging a gate rail.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said guide is disposed perpendicular to the axis of rotation of a gate on which said yoke is adapted to be applied.
3. A gate closure comprising a tubular guide having one end anchored to a fence rail, an elongated resilient member having one end fixed in said guide, the free end of said resilient member extending from the free end of said guide, and an attaching yoke carried by the free end of said resilient member engaging a gate rail, said yoke engaging the free end of said guide to limit the swinging movement of a gate in one direction.
