ATTU R N EYE Patented Nov. 8, 1949 BACK EXERCISING AND MASSAGING DEVICE Robert J. Robb, Crooksville, Ohio Application December 12, 1947, Serial No. 791,419
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a back exercising and massaging device, which is especially adapted to adjust or massage the muscles and vertebrae of the back.
An object of the invention is to provide a device which used at home can massage and exercise the back muscles without the aid of a nurse or doctor or similarly talented persons.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device that can be easily adjusted to fit people of various sizes, and is compact and portable.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a front Figure 3 is a side view of the device in its relative position to a human body;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view of the device and Figure 5 is a detailed fragmentary sectional view showing the manner of construction of the device.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the massaging and exercising device is generally designated by the reference numeral I 0. Thedevice comprises an easel shaped frame II, which is made from a continuous strip of tubing. The frame II has the horizontal floor engaging portion l2 which, at its ends, extends into the rearwardly inclined portions I 3 and I 4 respectively. At the upper ends of these portions, they extend into parallel straight portions I5 and I6 which extend into the downwardly inclined leg portions I1 and I8 respectively. The leg portions I1 and I8 extend to engage the floor level, as shown in Figure 3, so that the frame resting on the portion l2 and the ends of the portions I! and !8 place the portions I5 and II) in herzontal parallel relation to the floor.
Secured at its ends to the portions I3 and I4 of the frame I I, slightly below the portions I5 and I6, by fasteners I9, is the back board or rest 20.
Secured to the board 20, are the guideboards 2| and 22 respectively, which form the central guideway or channel 23. A board 24 is slidably mounted in the guideway and retained therein by parallel relatively spaced straps 25. Fasteners 26 secure the guideboards at their outer ends to the board and fasteners 21 secure the boards at their inner ends, while also securing the straps to the boards 2| and 22, at their inner ends.
Secured to the upper end of the board 24, is
View of Figure 1;
the padded roll 28 which is used to engage the back, as shown in Figure 3.
Adjacent the lower ends of the portions l1 and I8 of the frame, a tubular bar 29 joins the ends in spaced relation to each other to prevent the spreading thereof.
In use, the person places his feet on the portion 12 to hold the frame steady. The board 24 is then slidably adjusted so that all parts of the back may be massaged and exercised. The pressure on the roll 28 depends upon how much pressure is exerted against the roll by the persons using it.
The device is provided for home use, is portable to easily position it in any room, as desired, and if used regularly, will provide great benefit to the user thereof.
There has thus been provided an exercising and massaging device which, it is believed, will accomplish the objects of the invention.
It is believed that from the foregoing description, the structure and manner of use of the device will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it is to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to, provided they fall within the spirit of the in vention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character ing an easel shaped frame tinuous strip of tubing and ground engaging portion which is adapted to receive the weight of a person using the device, a back board carried by the frame in parallel relation to said ground engaging portion, guide boards secured to said back board in spaced relation to each other to form a central guideway there-between, straps secured to said guide boards in spaced parallel relation to each other and extending over said guideway, a board mounted for vertical sliding motion in said guide of said straps, and a padded roll at the upper end of said last board that is adapted to engage the back of the person using the device.
