3 Claims. 1.
This invention appertains to novel and useful improvements in devices adapted to forewarn impending danger.
`An object of this invention is to oscillate an extensible' arm having signal means associated therewith.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for carrying out the above mentioned function;
A further object of this invention is to provide a housing having a reversible motor means associatedtherewithga detachably associated arm connected with said motor means and switch means operatively connected with the said motor means'an'd the" signalen the said arm,`whereby the motor means and signal means may be simultaneously" actuated.
A further object of this invention is to provide a support for the said housing which is collapsible in nature. f
Another purpose of this invention is to provide an oscillatable signal Yfor use in conjunction with defective'vehicles, particularly Aduring the repair thereof? on highways and the'like.
Another purpose of this invention is to provide any extremely simple device of the character desoribe'cl'which is eicient in operation, being adapted to, utilize the energy of a conventional storage battery associated with vehicles.
Ancillary objects and features of novelty will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art, in following the description of the preierred forms of the present invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 5 is an enlarged elevational view of a portion of the support of the invention;
Figure 6 is a bottom view of the device showing the support in a collapsed position, and
Figure '7 is a fragmentary elevational view of a modied form of the support utilized in association with the housing.
Referring now in detail to the illustrated preferred forms of the invention, like reference characters are used throughout to indicate similar elements.v
This invention has been developed to provide a device for the purpose of giving a signal to traffiic on highways, during the repair of de-y fective vehicle. Oi course, this is but the preferential environment of the present invention and it may be used in conjunction with any other set of circumstances wherein a signal is desired.
eferring now to Figure 2, it will be noted that one form of the invention is disclosed.y A housing Ell composed of any suitable material is provided with motor means l2 secured therein. This motor means may be any conventional type of electrically operative motor having a reversing transmission built therein.
A suitable switch ld is secured to the said housing l0 and has a lead line or conductor I6 extending therefrom and terminating in the said motor means i2. Also extending from this switch I4 is a second conductor i8v which has resiliently biased spring clips 2@ at the terminals thereof.
A` shaft 22 extending from the said motor `means l2 may be provided with a collar 24 for retaining a sleeve 26`1ixed to the said shaft. Of course, a conventional set screw 23 may be utilized in this connection.
Ariarrii 3B is detachably associated with the said sleeve 26, which extends through a suitable bearing 32 Secured to the said housing it. Referring to Figure l, it will be noted that the said arm 30 is extensible in nature, being telescopic in construction. A suitable set screw 34 may extend through one of the components of the said extensible arm 36 and engage the other component, therefore effecting extensible adjustment.
A conductor 35 extends from the said switch i4 and proceeds through the sleeve 26, then through the arm 3G, terminating in a socket 38 positioned at the upper portion of the said arm Sil. A suitable source of illumination such as a bulb do may be supplied in the said socket 38. It is quite obvious that upon actuating the said switch i4, the motor means I2 will be actuated as well as the bulb 4B illuminated. Also, it is seen that the arm 3B will be oscillated as disclosed in phantom Figure 1.
If it is found desirable, the motor means l2 may be substituted by a direct drive motor in place of the type having a built-in reversing mechanism. In this instance, conventional slip rings for conducting current will be utilized in association wth the sleeve 26.
Positioned at the upper portion of the said extensible arm 30 is a small transparent housing which is composed of a pair of sections 42 and 44 respectively having anges 4B extending therearound. These anges are clamped within a bracket 48 having complemental flanges therein. Of course, the preferred red color may be utilized in association with the said transparent housing for warning purposes.
Means for supporting the said housing I0 is provided. This means is preferably a plurality of collapsible legs as is clearly evident from an inspection of Figures 5 and 7. If so desired, the legs may be of telescopic construction or, if a more inexpensive construction is desired, nonextensible legs may be utilized. A plurality of bearings 50 may be supplied on the undersurface of the said housing I8 for the purpose of receiving a substantially U-shape section 52 therein which section includes a web portion and legs.
Extensible members 54 may be provided in the leg portions of the said U-shape member and if desired additional extension members 56 may be supplied in each of the said extension members 54. This, of course, permits the resulting legs to be telescopically or extensively adjusted. Resilient clips 58 may be associated with each of the sections for locking engagement with notches Si) in the extensions.
Noting Figure 7, it will be seen that a bayonet latch construction may be substituted in lieu of the resilient clip 58. As is well known in the art, a bayonet latch consists of a slot S2 in one of the extensible members with an angularly disposed slot 64 communicating therewith. A protuberance 86 is engageablewith the said slots S2 and 64, whereby upon a relative twist or movement of the sections 68 and 'l0 having the slot means and protuberance associated therewith, locking may be effected.
As mentioned above, the arm 30 is detachably associated with the said sleeve 26 and for this construction, a conventional set screw T2 may extend through a suitable boss 14 provided integral with, or if desired, secured to the said arm 30. desirable and for economy, the conductor 36 does not necessarily extend through the said sleeve 28 and the arm 38 but may be positioned adjacent said arm and through a suitable aperture in the housing l0.
It will be noted at this point that if found While there has been described and illustrated only preferred forms of the invention, it is apparent that departures may be made without varying from the inventive concept.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A signal device comprising a housing, a motor therein, a conductor extending from said motor, clips on said conductor engageable with the terminals of a battery, a shaft extending through said housing, signal means detachably associated with said shaft, a switch in said conductor, said signal means including a hollow shaft having a luminating source at one end thereof, a line extending from said luminating source through said last mentioned shaft to said switch whereby said motor and said source may be actuated simultaneously, means for adjusting said shaft in selected extended positions, a telescoping support pivotally secured to said housing and a skirt disposed around the bottom of said housing receiving said support therein.
2. The combination of claim l and spring clips attached to sections of said telescoping support t? retain said support in selected extended posions.
3. The combination of claim 1 and said support including a pair of substantially U-shaped members having web portions and leg portions, bearings attached to the bottom of said housing extending at least partially around said web portions to pivotally support said U-shaped members, tubes slidably disposed on said legs, and spring clips attached to said legs and engaging said tubes to retain said tubes extended with respect to said Webs.
