10 Claims. (01. 5-260) The present invention relates to bed springs, seat springs and spring assemblies generally included in a variety of upholstered constructions. These spring structures are of the type comprising a pair of marginal frames in spaced relation, supporting a plurality of coil compression springs as .a spring body. This invention concerns itself with the construction of said frame members out of fiat metal strip; the rails of which frames lie in planes perpendicular to the longitudinal axes of the said coilsprings.
Heretofore said frames were each a form lying in a single plane and determining a rectangle with rounded corners. Forming such corners is no simple operation and occasions much spoilage .due to cracking and even breaking of the .material while being stretched. It is this objection that the present invention avoids.
An object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved construction for said marginal frames whose rail portions are coplanar, and whose corner formation is easy to make because substantially all stretching of the material is eliminated to accomplish the required form, as will be disclosed herein.
Another object hereof is to provide a corner construction for such frames which affords better maintainance of form to cushion and upholstered constructions.
A further object is'to provide a novel and improved construction in frames for spring assemblies which is reasonably cheap to manufacture and efficient in carrying out the purposes for which they are designed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Fig. 1 is a top plan ,view of agspring assembly embodying the teachings of this invention.
Fig.2 is an end view thereof.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the corner portion of a marginal frame included in the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the corner portion of a marginal frame asheretofore made.
In the drawings, the numerals l5 and I5, indicate generally a pair of spaced marginal frames of rectangular form with corners rounded. These frames support a plurality of coil compression springs l6, which are secured to each other and to the frames by any means and suitable fashion, as for instance by tie wires, helical ties or clips, which are not shown, for they are well known in the art. There are no bends in the frame mate- .spective portions between points A and B in a quarter circle, with said-points .at substantially the extremities of the arc. All this is extremely simple when compared with what need be done to make the corner .bend shown in Fig. 4, where the flat metal strip is maintained coplanar throughout. Of course, the bend 20 at the corners in the structure of Fig. 3, need not be a quarter arc, and the frame form may be other than rectangular, as design and use may dictate.
Another method of making these marginal frames, is to take a straight metal strip, stand it on one of its longitudinal edges and form it into a frame form with rounded corners; said edge determining a plane in the finished frame. Now by torsional movement at points ,A and B, quarter twist the strip, whereby the rail portions alone will assume coplanar horizontal position. The meeting edges of the .strip when formed into the frame, and prior to the torsional twisting operations, may be secured to each other in any suitable manner, as by welding or otherwise.
It is to be noted that the center lines of the rails 18 and I9, along their plane, are tangent to the arc into which the corner portions are bent, and that the plane of said rails is intermediate the edges of the corner portions of the frame. This affords overlapping of a portion of the end turns of intermediate marginal coils [6, by the rails of the frame, and contact of a portion of the end turns of the corner positioned coils It, with the concave surfaces of the frame corner bends, respectively.

This invention is capable of numerous forms and various applications without departing from the essential features herein disclosed. It is therefore intended and desired that the particular embodiment herein be deemed illustrative and not restrictive and that the patent shall cover all patentable novelty herein set forth; reference being had to the following claims rather than to the specific description herein to indicate the scope of this invention.
I claim: a
1. In a. spring assembly of the character described, a marginal frame made of strip material, comprising straight sides and bent corner portions; said frame determining a surface; the wide sides of the strip material constituting all the side portions of said frame, being substantially parallel to said surface, and the wide sides of the strip material constituting all the corner portions of said frame, being substantially perpendicular to said surface and a plurality of spring components carried on said frame.
2. A spring assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein the marginal frame has pairs of spaced quarter-turn torsional twists formed therein, to determine the respective corner portions thereof.
3. A spring assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein the marginal frame is made of a single strip having pairs of spaced quarter-turn torsional twists formed therein, to determine the respective corner portions thereof.
4. A spring assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein the wide sides of the strip material constituting all the side portions of the frame, are substantially coplanar.
5. A spring assembly as defined in claim 1,
wherein each of the corner portions of the frame are of actual form whose respective concave surfaces are inward of the frame remote external perimeter and wherein are included corner positioned spring components; said components being compression coil springs whose longitudinal axes are perpendicular to the mentioned surface; a portion of the end turn of each of said cornerpositioned coil springs being in contact with the concave surface of the frame at the respective corner portions of said frame.

In a spring assembly of the character de scribed, a pair of opposite, spaced marginal frames, each made of strip material, comprising straight sides and bent corner portions; each of said frames determining a surface, respectively; the wide sides of the strip material constituting all the side portions of the first frame, being substantially parallel to the surface determined by the first frame; the wide sides of the strip material constituting all the corner portions of the first frame, being substantially perpendicular to the surface determined by the first frame; the wide sides of the strip material constituting all the side portions of the second frame, being substantially parallel to the surface determined by the second frame; the wide sides of the strip material contituting all the corner portions of the second. frame, being substantially perpendicular to the surface determined by the second frame and a plurality of spring components carried by said frames whereby the said frames are maintained apart.
'7. A spring assembly as defined in claim 6, wherein each marginal frame has pairs of spaced quarter-turn torsional twists formed therein, to determine the respective corner portions thereof.
8. A spring assembly as defined in claim 6, wherein each marginal frame is made up of a single strip having pairs of spaced quarter-turn torsional twists formed therein, to determine the respective corner portions thereof.
9. A spring assembly as defined in claim 6, wherein the wide sides of the strip material constituting all the side portions of the first frame, are substantially coplanar and wherein the wide sides of the strip material'constituting all the side portions .of the second frame, are substantially coplanar.
10. A spring assembly as defined in claim 6 wherein each of the corner portions of the frames are of arcual form whose respective concave surfaces are inward of the frame remote external perimeter and wherein are included cornerpositioned spring components; said components being compression coil springs whose longitudinal axes are transverse the respective surfaces determined by the frames; a portion of each end turn of each of said corner-positioned coil spring being in contact with a concave surface of each frame respectively at the respective corner portions of said frames.
