This invention relates to watchmans signalling systems of the type in which a plurality of si nalling stations are provided along a predetermined route which it is intended the watchman shall follow and all of which it is intended he shall operate to insure that he visits all parts of the space covered by the system.
The invention particularly relates to the, construction of the signalling stations of such a system including those known as preliminary stations which, in order to condition the system,
. are required to be operated by the watchman preswitch operable successively to two different contact positions, is utilized to control transmission of two different signals. Such a switch is provided in each preliminary station and may be provided also in the transmitter station. It is preferably actuated by means of a lock of the tumbler combination type.
As disclosed in said co-pending application, the switches of the several preliminary stations are operated in succession by the watchman as he proceeds from one station to another. The arrangement of the circuits is such that when all of the preliminary switches are properly operated to selected positions of said two contact positions for each switch or to the alternates thereof, the transmitter station thereafter may be operated by the watchman on completion of his tour so as to transmit a routine signal. If the switch of any of the preliminary stations, or the corresponding switch in the transmitter station, is
improperly operated so that, for example, one station has its switch in the alternate position while the switches of the other stations are in the selected positions, an alarm signal or an alarm condition will be transmitted or set up when the transmitter is'operated.

It is another object of the invention in a watchmans signalling station of this type to insure that the signal controlling means or the switch is maintained in its condition or in the position to which it is moved to condition the system until the signal is properly transmitted.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a construction of the preliminary stations and of the transmitter station which will secure operation of the signal controlling means, such as the switch above referred to, as disclosed in my said co-pending application, under control of .a lock of the combination type preferably provided with a combination changin element for changing the combination.
It is another object of the invention to provide a signalling station in which in each operation thereof to change the transmittible signal the combination of the lock controlling operation of said station will be changed, thus requiring a key of different and particular form or contour for subsequent operation of said station to move the switch to the next position for transmission of a signal.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a signalling station operated by a lock of the type above referred to in which the combination is changed in the operation of the lock and to It is an object of the invention to provide a construction in watchmans signalling stations which will insure that the signal controlling means or the switch is properly operated by the watchman to determine the desired transmittible provide in said station means for insuring that the proper key is available to the watchman for the operation of the next station of similar construction, thus to insure the proper sequence of operation of the stations of the system.
The above objects and other objects are accomplished according to the invention by providing the signalling station with a lock having means actuated by a member of the lock movable in the operation thereof and connected to the signal controlling means to operate said signal controlling means to change the transmittible signal. The lock preferably is one of the combination type requiring a particular key for its operation and may have the keyway shaft or key plug thereof operatively connected to means such as a cam for effecting movement of the signal controlling produce an alarm condition or an alarm signal 1 depending upon the corresponding actuation of the other stations of the system. Operation of the lock of the station of the invention, therefore, is effective to operate the switch to change the translmittible such operation being possible only by means of a proper key. Change of the transmittible signal unless said lock is so properly operated is prevented.
In one embodiment of the invention the lock utilized in the station of the invention is provided i with a combination changing element actuated in the operation of the lock to change the combination by a key of different but particular form for each such operation. In another embodiment the lock may be operated by a master key to change the combination at will from one combination to another and to set the lock in a selected combination, a key of particular form being used for ordinary operation of the station by the watch-man. The features of such locks and the actuation of the combination changing element thereof in the operation of the lock are the subject of any co-pending application Serial No. 594,231, filed May 1'7, 1945, now Patent 2,427,814, which is a division of my said copending application Serial No. 414,863, filed October 21, 1941, Patent No. 2,376,389.
In the preferred arrangement the locks of at least the preliminary stations in a watchmans system are provided with the combination changing element so that in each operation of the station by the watchman the combination is automatically changed, thus requiring a different key in a subsequent operation of the lock of each such preliminary station of the tour.
In order to maintain the switch in the position to which it has been moved in the operation of the station, while permitting the key to be returned to its original position as in the ordinary operation of a lock, for example, by reversed movement of the keyway shaft through 90 from the position to which it has been rotated in the operation of the lock, ratchet means or equivalent mechanism is associated with the keyway shaft and with the cam or other switch ope-rating means to permit such return movement of the keyway shaft without return movement of the cam.

The advantages afforded by such arrangement of stations provided with locks having different combinations may be secured even though the locks are not connected to operate a signal conrolling means, such as the switch of the system of my said Patent No. 2,376,389. Although in such case signals will not be produced at a central oifice, nevertheless, it will be necessary for the watchman to follow and complete his tour in the predetermined manner. Such an arrangement of the lock boxes of the invention also may be used where, for any purpose, a definite predetermined succession of operations of mechanical devices is required, it being possible, for example, to arrange the boxes containing the locks so as to enclose the operating levers or other control means of the mechanical devices. The succession of the combinations of the locks operable by the different keys in succession may conform to the desired order of operating the mechanical devices, the keys being released, if desired, from the different boxes as above described. Dispensing machines and similar devices may be equipped with combination changing locks and the means for releasably retaining the key for the succeeding device to be visited in order to insure that the attendant shall visit and care for all of the devices assigned to his tour in a systematic manner.
In the particular embodiment of the invention which utilizes a combination lock of the type which is provided with a combination changing element, change of the combination with a given key and the concomitant release of another key from the station not only aids the watchman to complete his tour in the proper order but prevents operation of the stations in any other order than that determined by the succession of combinations of the combination determining element of the locks, this succession preferably being different for each tour for a substantial number of tours determined by the available combinations of the locks. The stations of the invention, therefore, preferably are provided with a key compartment into which the key is dropped after operation of the lock to change the combination, and preferably to change the signal controlling switch to a different contact position. the key previously dropped in this compartment being released by such operation of the look.
It is a further feature of the invention that the transmitter station is provided with a code transmitter which may be of a conventional type having a movable part which is moved to energize the power means of the code transmitter. In the transmitter station of the invention, such movable part is actuated in the operation of the lock. Preferably such movable part of the code transmitter is operatively connected to a movable member, such as the keyway shaft or key plug, of the lock and, concomitantly with the operation of the lock and of the cam or other means which actuates the switch to change said switch to a different signalling position, the code transmitter is operated to transmit the signal, said signal being determined by the position to which the switch of said transmitter station is moved in the operation of its lock.
Other objects and features of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings in which:

In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, is shown the construction of a transmitter station comprising a housing 28 having mounted therein a suitable lock 22, the key-way shaft 24 of which is adapted to be coupled with a shaft 25 mounted in frame members 25 and 21. shaft 25 so as to be rotatable relative thereto is a high and low lobe cam 38 'to which is secured on one side thereof a four-toothed ratchet 32 and on the other side thereof is secured a stabilizing hub portion 34. Fastened upon shaft 25 is a pawl 85 which is biased by a spring 36 to engage the ratchet 32. The pawl 35 is adapted to engage the teeth on the ratchet and move the ratchet and the cam 38 through an angle of 90 each time the shaft 25 is actuated by the key-way shaft 24. The cam 38 is adapted to engage a movable contact 85 of a signal controlling switch for successive engagement with contacts 8| and 82 to change the transmittible signal accoring as the low and high portions of the cam 38 are moved into engagement with the toe 83 of the contact 80.
The stabilizing element 34 is provided with four fiat faces engageable by a flat faced detent 38 contained in a bore 39 in a block 48 which is mounted on a wall of the housing 20. The detent 38 is biased against the element 34 by a spring 42 to insure proper positioning of the cam 38 for each actuation of the lock. The block 48 also contains a bore 44 within which a cam position indicator 45 is adapted to move. The indicator is biased upwardly by a spring 46 against the cam 35 and its positions are detectable through an opening 41 in register with said indicator. When the cam 38 is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the end of the indicator 45 may project as shown somewhat beyond the housing 20. When the cam is rotated upon actuation of the lock to a position 90 from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the end of the indicator 45 may be flush with or somewhat Within the housing 28.
Each station preferably is provided with an' indicator 45 so that the superintendent or other authorized person can determine by inspection the setting of each station should routine operation be interrupted. Thus the system can easily be reconditioned for resumption of routine operation without dismantling any of the stations.
*Fastened on the shaft 25 also is a winding arm 48 by which the spring drive of an escapement Mounted on the mechanism 58 of conventional construction (not shown in complete detail) can be wound to effect transmission of signals. The mechanism 50 may be provided with a pair of springs 5| and 52 (Fig. 3) coiled about shaft 55 for driving the mechanism. These springs 5| and 52 are relatively weak so that their resistance to winding is not too great for an average size key and yet strong enough that when wound they will provide adequate power to operate the escapement mechanism 50 and the associated code transmitter 58. The arm 48 is adapted to engage an arm 54 carried by the shaft 55 to wind the springs 5| and 52 when the lock is operated to rotate shaft 25 through the angle of through which cam 38 is moved to its next position, as above mentioned, to change switch element 88 from one to the other of contacts 8|, 82. The normal position of the arm 54 is determined by an arm 6| adapted to engage a stop 53. The escapement mechanism is provided with suitable reduction gearing 56 (Figs. 2 and 4) and the code transmitter 58 is carried by a shaft 52 thereof.
The code transmitter 58 is shown as comprising a disk 60 having two sets of eleven teeth each, which when the disk is revolved 360 actuate a switch contact 64 relative to a contact 55 to send two groups of successive impulses over the circuit of the system. The number of impulses transmitted indicate the watchmans number or the identity of the transmitter station from which the signal is transmitted, it being understood that the signals may comprise any number of impulses per group and any number of groups depending on the form of the disk 50 and the arrangement of the teeth thereon; also that the system may,
have more than one transmitter station and that each such station may have a different signal determined by the disk 60.
To prevent anyone from repeating the actuation of the transmitter station before it has been given suflicient time to transmit a signal, a safety v hook B5 fastened upon the shaft 25 is provided to engage a pin 51 fastened on lever 68 pivoted at 89 on the frame 18. The lever 68 is provided with a cam surface 14 biased by a spring 18 toward a cam roller 15 rotatable on stud Tl fastened on the arm 54. After the arm 54 has been moved in winding by rotation on shaft 55 clockwise in Fig. 1 by engagement therewith of arm 48, it moves reversely in unwinding and the cam roller 15 pivots the lever 68 to a position removing the pin 61 thereon out of the path of the hook 58. Thus only when the transmitter has completed transmission of a signal does the pin 61 reach a position where it permits actuation of the lock 22 and the arm 48 connected thereto.
When, for example, the lock 22 is actuated by a key the shaft 25 is revolved counterclockwise as viewed in Fig. 1, causing the arm 48 to engage and force the arm 54 to rotate clockwise to wind the springs 5| and 52. During the clockwise rotation of the arm 54 the cam roller l5 moves along the cam surface 14 to permit the spring 15 to urge the pin 61 against the outer surface ll of the saefty hook 66. When the keyway shaft 24 and the shaft 25 are retracted by reverse movement of the key, the hook 66 is revolved clockwise and the spring 16 snaps the pin 61 in front of the hook 66 (Fig. 4).
As the escapement mechanism drives the transmitter 58, the arm 54 revolves counterclockwise and. the cam roller 15 thereon engages the cam surface 14 to gradually pivot the arm 58 clockwise and thereby move the pin-61 out of the path which the hook 66 takes in rotating with the arm 48 and shaft 25, so that by the time the arm 6| engages the stop 63 the pin 61 will have cleared the hook 66 which then may pass the pin 61 in the next operation of the transmitter station unrestrained by said pin 51 and arm 58.
In Figs. 5, 6 and l, the construction of the preliminary station is shown. Since many parts thereof are identical to parts used in the transmitter station, such identical parts are identified by the same reference characters. As in the transmitter station, the housing 85 of the preliminary station is provided with a lock 22, the key-way shaft 24 of which is coupled to the shaft 25 suitably supported in frame elements 25 and 2?, and the shaft 25 is provided with a switch actuating cam 30, a ratchet 32, pawl 35 and a stabilizer hub 34. Associated with the switch ac tuating cam 353 is a cam position indicator 45 and a movable contact 90 which is adapted to engage contacts SI and 52, depending on whether the low or high portion of the cam is in engagement with the toe 83 of said movable contact 90.
The preliminary stations are each provided with a key compartment 34 defining a narrow passageway extending from a narrow key inlet slot 93 in the upper wall of the housing 85 downwardly to a corresponding discharge slot 95 at the bottom thereof. Pivotally mounted at 51 adjacent the key compartment is a movable frame 96 biased by a spring 58 so that a pair of lugs I80 and I02 thereon are normally held in a position in which they extend transversely of the key compartment 34. When a key is dropped into the compartment through inlet slot 93, the head portion Hi3 of the key is engaged by the lugs I05, I02 to support the key within the compartment (Figs. 5 and 6). To the frame 95 is attached by rivets I05 a piece providing a cam surface I04 which is engageable by a cam wiper I05 fastened of the watchman who may pull the key out past these spring elements.
When in a watchmans signalling system the signalling stations are provided with the automatic combination looks as hereinabove proposed, the watchman will be required to actuate the stations in a predetermined sequence. This sequence of operation may be secured by an automatic combination changing lock as shown in Figs. 8 and 9 in which the combination is changed each time the lock is actuated. Starting with an initial key, the watchman will first actuate the lock of the first preliminary station of his route and when the lock and keyway shaft are returned to their original position and the key is removed, the watchman will drop the key in the slot 93 (Figs. 5 and 6) and take the key which is released by actuation of the lock to fall to the position in the lower end of the key compartment 34 as above described. With this key the watchman will continue to the next assigned station of his tour. The watchman goes through the same operation at each station, each time dropping the key he has just used into the compartment 94 of the station just operated and using the key received from said key compartment of said station for operation of the lock of the next succeding station in the tour.
The lock of the transmitter station may likewise be an automatic lock or it may be one which is actuatable by any of the keys used in the system.
Figs. 8 and 9 show the construction of an automatic combination changing lock as disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 594,231, filed May 17, 1945 above referred to. In the lock of Figs. 8 and 9 the keyway shaft 24 is provided with a keyway for receiving key I28 engaging pins I26 which are inserted in pinways I25 in said shaft 24. Said keyway shaft 24 is rotatable in bore I27 of the lock barrel III), the inner end of said keyway shaft 24 being rotatable in the bearing I58 formed in bearing plate I51 fastened by means not shown to barrel H0.
Rotatable in bore III of said barrel H is the cylindrical pin tumbler magazine II2 surrounded by cylindrical sleeve H4. The cylindrical sleeve is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending rows of perforations H8. The perforations in each row register with certain of the pin tumblers N of a row of pin tumblers carried in sockets II3 formed in the pin tumbler magazine H2. The tumbler pins II5 are biased by springs II! so as to be pressed outwardly through the apertures H8 when said pins are in register therewith and into engagement with the pins I26 in pinways I of the keyway shaft 24. The sleeve H4 is rotatable by means to be described into positions with selected rows of apertures in line with said row of pin tumblers H5 and with apertures I 18 of the selected row in register with certain of the pinways I25 of said shaft 24. Depending upon the number and arrangement of the aperatures in any given row, a combination of the lock is determined which requires a key of particular form to operate the lock. Rotation of the sleeve II4 to a different position of registration of a row of apertures II8 with the row of pin tumblers I I 5 provides a different combination determined by the arrangement and the number of apertures H8 in said row of the sleeve in said different position which individually register with pins II5 Rotatable on and relative to the keyway shaft 24 is the gear I meshing with gear I32 which is carried upon the extension I3I of the pin tumbler magazine H2 and which is fastened to said pin tumbler magazine to rotate therewith.
Said extension I3I is rotatable in end plate I51.
As shown in Figs. 8 and 9 the gear I30 is provided with a recess I44 into which the end I45 of the key I28 projects for engagement of the gear I30. Upon rotation of the keyway shaft 24 by the key I28 an initial movement of said shaft relative to the pin tumbler magazine and relative to the apertured sleeve II4 takes place until the end I45 of key I23 engages the Wall of the recess I44. Thereafter the gear I30 is rotated together with the shaft 24 in the operation of the lock. Concomitantly the gear I32 rotates the tumbler magazine H2. Detent I36 biased outwardly by spring I3? and having a bevelled end I35 entering notches I34 in the sleeve H4 is positioned in the pin tumbler magazine II2, having regard to the direction of rotation of the gear I32, so that said detent I 36 engages the sleeve II 4 to effect rotation thereof in the movement of the tumbler magazine produced by rotation of said shaft 24 and key I28. The bevel provided on the detent, however, permits it to slip under the portions of the sleeve lying between the notches I34 in the return movement of the tumbler magazine effected by reverse rotation of the key when the end I45 thereof engages the opposite wall of the recess I. As shown in Fig. 9, a pawl I40 biased by spring I42 to enter the notches I34 of the sleeve H4 is so positioned as to prevent reverse rotation of the sleeve in said reverse rotation of the pin tumbler magazine. It will be apparent that by means disclosed in Figs. 8 and 9 the combination of the lock may be changed in each operation thereof, thus requiring a new key of particular form for the next operation of the lock.
By providing a key of the same contour as illustrated in Fig. 8 for the combination there shown but with the end I45 thereof removed, engagement and operation of the ears I30 and I32 is prevented. Change of the combination concomitant with the lock operation thus may be prevented. The station provided with such a lock may be utilized, as desired, either for automatic combination change or as one always requiring a key of particular contour for its operation, depending upon the form of the end of key I28. In either case, it will be apparent that the keyway shaft 24 may be connected in the manner illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, 6 and '7 to the shaft 25 which operates the cam and the other mechanism above described for actuation of the signal controlling switches 80, 8|, 82 and 90, 9|, 92.
When the lock is operated by a key formed so as not to change the combination, the combinations of the locks of a series of stations may be changed by the superintendent or an authorized person by means of a master key so as to set the different stations all in the same combination or in diiferent combinations as determined by the position to which the sleeve H4 is rotated when the lock is operated by such a master key. Periodic or irregular and unannounced changes of the combinations of the stations requiring a different key or set of keys may be made by the superintendent in order to frustrate tampering or the duplication of keys.
It will be understood also that when locks which are constructed for automatic change of the combination in the operation of the lock are used and the watchman fails properly to operate all of the stations, or if he operates any which he is instructed to omit as explained in my co-pending application Serial No. 415,863 above referred to, he cannot restore the improperly operated lock to the combination in which it was set before such improper operation because of the construction of the lock with the pawl I engaging notch I34 of.sleeve II4. Moreover, because of the ratchet means 32, 35 he cannot restore the cam 38 of the signalling station of the invention, however, operated, to its position before such improper operation and an alarm signal or an alarm condition will be given or produced in a system constructed as described in said Patent No. 2,376,389, the switch blade 80 being held in contact with one of contacts 8| or until the cam is again forwardly actuated by the proper key or by other means. The pawl and ratchet means of the look also cooperate with the ratchet means associated with the cam to prevent repeated actuation of the signalling station except by the proper key.
Because of these constructions also the watchman may not interfere with the operation of the transmitter station once he has actuated its cam by a key or otherwise. The signal as determined by the code transmitter disc 60 and as conditioned by the operation of the preliminary stations of the system of my said Patent No. 2,376,389 must be transmitted and completed before it is possible again to change the position of the actuating cam 30. Such further actuation also will require a different key if the transmitter station is equipped with the automatic combination changing type of look.
For convenience in determining the significance of the two difierent positions of the indicator 45, that is, projecting from the housing 20 or flush therewith, a chart may be kept by the superintendent recording the condition of the internal parts of each lock station, e. g., the positions of the combination determining sleeves IM and of the switch contacts and corresponding to the position of the indicator 4'5 as determined by the positions of the cam 30.
It is apparent therefore that the constructive and operating features of the signalling stations of the invention afiord protection against improper operation of and tampering with the system in which they are used and insure that the watchman shall make his tour as laid out, whether in connection with the system of my application Serial No. 415,863 or in an installation of stations not interconnected electrically or otherwise.
I claim:
1. A watchmans signalling station comprising a casing, a lock carried by said casing and having a member movable in the operation of said look, a switch within said casing operable to successive positions, means within said casing actuated by said member in'said operation of said lock and operatively connected to said switch for operating said switch to change it from one position to another, and means observable from outside said casing. and actuated by said switch operating means to indicate the position of said switch.
2. A watchmans signalling station comprising a lock having a member movable in the operation of said look and constructed with changeable tumbler combinations, signal controlling means operable in a succession of operations thereof to successive positions to control transmission in succession of signals in the respective positions, and means actuated by said member in said operation of said lock and operatively connected to said signal controlling means for operating said signal controlling means from one position to another, said lock comprising a tumbler combination changing element actuated by said movable member in the operation of the lock to change the tumbler combination whenever said lock is operated to change said controlling means from one position to another.
3. A watchmans signalling station comprising a lock having a member movable by a key in the operation of said lock and constructed with changeable tumbler combinations, signal controlling means operable in a succession of operations thereof to at least two different positions to control transmission in succession of signals in the respective positions, means actuated by said memher in said operation of said lock and operatively connected to said signal controlling means for operating said signal controlling means from one position to another, said lock comprising a tumbler combination changing element actuated by said movable member in the operation of the lock to change the tumbler combination whenever said lock is operated to change said controlling means from one position to another position, means for releasably retaining a key for operating asimilar signalling station, and means actuated upon operation of said lock to change the tumbler combination and operatively connected to said key retaining means for releasing said key from said key retaining means.
4. A Watchmans signalling station comprising a lock having a member movable by a key in the operation of said lock, signal controlling means operable in a succession of operations thereof to at least two different positions to control transmission of signals in the respective positions, means actuated by said member in said operation of said lock and operatively connected to said signal controlling means for operating said signal controlling means from one position to another position to change the control of the transmittible signal, means for releasably retaining a key for operating a similar signalling station, and means operatively connecting said member of said lock to said key retaining means for releasing said key therefrom upon locking operation of said lock.
5.. A watchmans signalling station comprising a casing, a lock carried by said casing and having a member movable in the operation of said look, a switch within said casing operable to successive positions, means within said casing actuated by said member in said operation of said lock and operatively connected to said switch for operating said switch to change it from one position to another position, and a code transmitter actuated by said member in said operation of said lock and connected to said switch to transmit the signal as determined by the position to which said switch is moved in the said operation of said. lock.
6. A watchmans signalling station comprising a lock having a member movable forwardly and then in reverse in the operation of said lock, signal controlling means operable in a succession of operations thereof to and from at least two different positions to control transmission in succession of signals in the respective positions, means actuated by said member in its forward movement in said operation of the lock and operatively connected to said signal controlling means for operating said signal controlling means from one position to a succeeding position, means for maintaining said means actuated by said member in the position to which it has been moved in said forward movement during said reverse movement of said member so as to maintain said signal controlling means in the position to which it has been changed until said look again is operated, and a code transmitter having means actuated by said member and moved forwardly thereby in said forward movement of said member for operating said code transmitter to transmit a signal as determined by the position to which said signal controlling means is moved and movable reversely upon said reverse movement of said member to a position for repeated operation thereby of said code transmitter.
7. A watchmans tour station comprising a lock. having a member movable in the operation of the lock and constructed with changeable tumbler combinations, said lock comprising a tumbler combination changing element actuated by said movable member in the operation of the lock to change the tumbler combination, means for releasably retaining a key for operating a similar tour station, and means operable upon actuation of said lock to change the tumbler combination thereof for releasing said key from said key retaining means.
