2 Claims.

This invention relates to improvements in portable crib beds, and more particularly to a portable crib bed that is foldable from an open condition to a compact, folded condition in which it simulates a conventional piece of hand luggage.

It is among the objects of the invention to provide an improved, portable crib bed embodying a bed or receptacle portion and a crib portion in permanent, operative assembly with each other, which crib bed, when open, provides a bed of adequate size for an infant or small child, and when folded provides a compact package having a size and weight not exceeding that of larger pieces of conventional hand luggage and closely simulates a piece of hand luggage in outward appearance, provides interiorly thereof adequate space for a mattress, covers and various personal effects of an infant, is simple, durable, and economical in construction, and neat and attractive in appearance in both its open and its closed condition.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a crib bed illustrative of the invention in folded, portable condition;

Figure 2 is a perspective view on a somewhat enlarged scale of the crib bed in open, operative position;

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a fragmentary portion of the crib bed taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a detailed perspective View of a pair of corner posts of the crib structure showing an illustrative arrangement for releasably securing two crib sections together in upstanding or operative condition; and

Figure 5 is a transverse cross-section of the improved crib bed taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.

With continued reference to the drawings, the bed or receptacle portion, generally indicated at I0, is an elongated, hollow body of rectangular shape which, when in the open condition illustrated in Figure 2, has a continuous bottom wall ll, two end walls l2, and two side walls 13. The bottom wall H has two transverse fold lines l4 therein substantially parallel to each other and disposed one at each side of the transverse centerline of the bottom wall at substantially equal distance therefrom. The portion of the bottom wall between the fold lines [4 constitutes the bottom of the receptacle when the receptacle gles each equal in area to is in the folded condition illustrated in Figure 1.

Each side wall has two perpendicularly-transverse fold lines l5 therein extending from the corresponding ends of the fold lines M of the bottom wall and two diagonal fold lines l6 extending from the points of intersection of the corresponding fold lines l4 and [5 to the center of the side-wall edges between the fold lines IS. The fold lines l5 and I6 provide in each side wall an isosceles triangle having its base extending from the corresponding ends of the fold lines l4 and which is foldable inwardly of the receptacle to rest upon the portion of the bottom wall between the fold lines I and two smaller triansubstantially one-half the area of the larger isosceles triangle and which smaller triangles li-e upon the upper. surface of the larger triangle when the two end portions of the receptacle are folded together to the condition illustrated in Figure 1.

The receptacle is provided with spring latches I! by means of which the two end portions may be releasably secured together when in folded condition and each end wall I2 is provided with a handle l8 by means of which the crib bed may be carried when folded.

A single crib section I9 is secured to each end wall of the receptacle interiorly and adjacent the edge thereof. Each such crib section l9 preferably comprises a rectangular frame constituted by a top rail [9a, a bottom rail I91), end pieces I90, and spaced-apart parallel spindles I911 extending perpendicularly between the top rail 19a and the bottom rail l9b. These end sections are secured to the end walls l2 by suitable hinges 20 they are movable between an upstanding position relative to the respective end walls, as illustrated in Figure 2, and a folded position in which they are disposed within the confines of the receptacle Ill. When the receptacle contains a mattress the end crib sections l9 will be folded inwardly to rest upon the top of the mattress or upon folded covers disposed between the mattress and the folded end crib sections.

A series of four crib sections lies along each side wall l3 and each such series includes two end sections 2| and two intermediate sections 22. The sections 2! and 22 are constructed in a manner similar to the end crib sections is and the outer sections 2! are hinged to the corresponding side walls i3 by hinges 23 so that these sections are movable in the same manner as the sections l9 between an upstanding position relative to the corresponding side walls and a folded position in which they are disposed within the receptacle,

so that preferably below the inwardly-folded end sections H9. The intermediate sections 22 are hinged to the adjacent outer sections 2| by hinges 24 so that they may be folded to a position in which they are substantially superimposed upon the corresponding outer sections before the outer sections are folded inwardly from their upstanding position, as illustrated in Figures 2, 3, and 5. Each end member L90 of each end crib section. 19 is provided With an outwardly-extending apertured 111g 25 and each end member Zlc of each outer crib section 2i is provided with a similar apertured lug 26 which overlaps the lug 25 on the adjacent end member I 90. With corresponding lugs 2'5 and 26 in overlapping condition, dowel pins 21 may be inserted through the lug apertures to releasably secure the outer sections 2| to the adjacent end sections l9 so that all of the crib sections will be firmly supported in upstanding position relative to the end and side walls of the receptacle l0.

' Adjacent intermediate crib sections 22 are provided with hook and pin latch means 28 by means of which the intermediate sections may be releasably secured together and in upstanding position rglative to the corresponding receptacle side Walls As stated above, the receptacle [9 is of a size to conveniently contain a suitable mattress and the usual covers provided for infants" beds and may also be provided with pockets and compartments' to contain other personal effects so that the entire group of articles necessary or conVenient to an infants comfort while traveling, can be carried in the one receptacle.

The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiment is, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative andnot restrictve, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claims are, therefore, intended to be embraced therein.

What is claimed is:

1. A portable crib bed comprising a generally rectangular receptacle having end walls, side walls, and a continuous bottom wall when said receptacle is in open condition, said bottom wall having two transverse, substantially parallel fold lines therein disposed one at each side of the transverse center-line of said bottom wall and at substantially equal distances therefrom, the portion of said bottom wall between said fold lines constituting a bottom for said receptacle when folded, and each of said side walls having transverse and diagonal fold lines therein between said bottom wall fold lines providing side-wall portions foldable inwardly of said receptacle to enable the edges of said end walls and the edges of said side walls between said end walls and said bottom wall fold lines to come together when said'receptacle is folded, crib sections hinged to said end and side walls interiorly at the edges of said walls surrounding the open side of said receptacle when the latter is opened, said crib sections extending entirely along said side and end walls and being foldable from an upstanding position to a position within said receptacle, means releasably securing the two end portions of said receptacle together when in folded condition, and means releasably securing said crib sections together at the corners of said receptacles when said receptacle is unfolded and said crib sections are in upstandin position.

A portable crib bed comprising a generally rectangular receptacle having end walls, side walls, and a continuous bottom wall when said receptacle is in open condition, said bottom wall having two transverse, substantially parallel fold lines therein disposed one at each side of the transverse center-line of said bottom wall and at substantially equal distance-s therefrom, the

portion of said bottom wall between said fold lines constituting a bottom for said receptacle when folded, and each of said side walls having transverse and diagonal fold lines therein between said bottom wall fold lines providing side-wall portions foldable inwardly of said receptacle to enable the edges of said end Walls and the edges of said side walls between said end walls and said bottom wall fold lines to come together when said receptacle is folded, and crib sections hinged tosaid end and side walls interiorly thereof and. foldable from an upstanding position to a position within said receptacle, said crib sections including two end members hinged respectively to the end walls of said receptacle and four sections extending along each side wall of said receptacle, the two outer sections of each four side-wall sections being hinged to the corresponding side wall and the two intermediate sections being hinged to the adjacent outer section and foldable into superimposed position relative thereto.
