The present invention refers to a finger nail polish stencil and support and relates more particularly to the type of device adapted to compressively engage the tip of a human finger and. constitute a stencil for the lacquering of the finger nail, simultaneously constituting a support for the underside of the finger nail tip.
An object of the present invention is, along with providing the stencil for lacquering the upper surface of the nail, to provide the support for the underside of the nail, which support will simultaneously prevent the underside of the nail from being lacquered.
A further object is the provision of such support in a construction which is adjustable to nails of different sizes.
In accomplishing the objects of the present invention, a substantially cylindrical casing is formed with a, longitudinal split, which casing is cut away to form a stencil conforming to the shape of the human finger nail across the top, the casing being mounted on a resilient handle portion comprising a bight, on the two legs of which are mounted the respective halves of the split cylindrical casing. Between the bight portion and the casing, the legs of the handle are crossed so that pressing inward on the bight causes the split halves of the casing to separate laterally. Extendin on a lateral axis between the legs of the bight is a coil spring pushing out- Ward against the legs, tending to keep the halves of the casing together. The nail support is a substantially U-shaped member having at its ends substantially rectangular shoes which are slidably mounted in channels on the outside of the casing and extending longitudinally thereof.
The nail support member extends upward from either of these shoes, across the front surface of the finger immediately under the nail and supporting the latter, thence downwardly and rearwardly to the other shoe. The nail support member is firmly attached to its shoes, which are, as previously mentioned, rectangular and non-rotatable relatively to the channels in which they are slidable. It is thus evident that nails of different lengths may be supported on their under surface and adjacent their tips by the longitudinally adjustable nail supporting member.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, the improved finger nail stencil and support It comprises the substantially parti-cylindrical casing II, casing II comprising the two approximately quarter cylindrical halves I2 and I 3. The half portions I 2 and I3 conform generally to the semicylindrical upper surface of a human finger tip. Each half I2 and I3 is cut away or relieved so as to constitute it a stencil for lacquering a finger nail. The casing I I, split longitudinally, as mentioned above, into the halves I2 and I3 is mounted on a handle I4, the latter comprising a bight portion I5 and the leg portions I6 and I1. Leg portion I6 has a transversely extending portion I8 and leg I! has a transversely extendin portion I9. Referring to Fig. l, the left half I2 of easing II is mounted on the upper portion I9 of right leg I1, while the right half I3 of casing II is mounted on the transversely extending portion I8 of the left leg I6. Thus by squeezing legs I6 and I! together, handle I4 being of resilient construction, the halves I2 and I 3 of easing II are caused to separate laterally. A coil spring 20 is located between legs I6 and I! nd presses outwardly against both, causing the halves i2 and I3 to approach each other due to the aforementioned construction of portions I8 and I9 of legs I6 and I1 crossing each other. A stop portion 2| on portion I8 of leg I6 engages portion I9 of leg I! to prevent the half portions I2 and I3 coming too close together.
There is thus provided a stencil means for lacquering the top surface of a finger nail 22 of a finger 23, the stencil means being extremely simple to use.
The nail support and guard 24 is substantially U-shaped, and terminates at either end in the substantially rectangular shoes 25. The nail support 24 extends forward and upward from these shoes, and across from one side of the device Ill to the other, passing across the front of the finger placed in case II. The upper surface 26 of support 24 is conformed at its central portion to the under surface of the nail 22, and not only supports the nail when it is in contact therewith but prevents the application of lacquer to the under surface thereof. The rearward facing surface 21 of support 24, shown in Fig. 6, is substantially vertical and adapted to contact the extreme forward tip of the finger under the nail. The laterally central guard and support portion 28 comprising the surfaces 26 and 21 are supported in operative position by the arms 29, the latter being firmly connected to the shoes 25. Shoes 25 are substantially rectangular as previously mentioned, and are slidable longitudinally of case ll in the shoe housings 30, the latter being attached to the half portions 12 and [3 by flanges 35 and further comprising the wall portions 32 extending substantially perpendicularly to flange 31 and wall portions 33 extending substantially parallel to flange 31 but in spaced relation thereto, and formed with the slot 34 through which the arms 29 extend to be connected to shoes 25 contained within housings 3%.
As seen in Fig. 2, the support and guard member 24 is adjusted to its forward position, the shoes 25 having been slid forward in housings 30 in order that the portion 28 may underlie and support and guard against lacquering the under surface of a comparatively long finger nail 22 illustrated.
Referring now to Fig. 3, the same device I is shown in use with a comparatively short finger nail 35. In order to adjust guard 25 to the shorter finger nail 35, the shoes 25 are slid backward in housings 30, as also shown in broken lines in Fig. 4. This is the only adjustment necessary in order to guard against lacquering the under side of nails of different lengths.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a finger nail stencil and support, in combination, a substantially parti-cylindrical casing, said casing being split longitudinally into two half portions, said half portions being relieved so as to constitute a stencil for lacquering a finger nail, and a resilient handle, said handle comprising a bight portion and two leg portions, said leg portions comprising uppertransversely extending portions crossing each other, said half portions being mounted on said upper-portions.
2. In a finger nail stencil and support, in combination, a substantially parti-cylindrical casing, said casing being split longitudinally into two half portions, said half portions being relieved so as to constitute a stencil for lacquering a finger nail, and a resilient handle, said handle comprising a bight portion and two leg portions, said leg portions comprising upper transversely extending portions crossing each other, said half portions being mounted on said upper portions, one of said upper portions comprising a stop portion adapted to engage a portion of the other of said upper portions.
3. In a finger nail stencil and support, in combination, a substantially parti-cylindrical casing, said casing being split longitudinally into two half portions, said half portions being relieved was to constitute a stencil for lacquering a finger nail, a -resilient handle, said handle comprising a bight portion and two leg portions, said leg portions comprising upper transversely extending portions crossing each other, said half portions being mounted on said upper portions, and a nail support connected to said half portions and extending upward and forward from said connection so as to engage the under surface of a nail being lacquered.
4. In a finger nail stencil and support, in combination, a substantially parti-cylindrical casing, said casing being split longitudinally into two half portions, said half portions being relieved so as to constitute a stencil for lacquering a finger nail, a resilient handle, said handle comprising a bight portion and two leg portions, said leg portions comprising upper transversely extending portions crossing each other, said half portions being mounted on said upper portions, a nail support connected to said half portions and extending upward and forward from said connection so as to engage the under surface of a nail being lacquered, the upper surface of said support being conformed to the under surface of a human finger nail so as to prevent lacquering of said under surface.
5. In a finger nail stencil and support, in combination, a substantially parti-cylindrical casing, said casing being split longitudinally into two half portions, said half portions being relieved so as to constitute a stencil for lacquering a finger nail, a resilient handle, said handle comprising a bight portion and two leg portions, said leg portions comprising upper transversely extending portions crossing each other, said half portions being mounted on said upper portions, a nail support connected to said half portions and extending upward and forward from said connection so as to engage the under surface of a nail being lacquered, the upper surface of said support being conformed to the under surface of a human finger nail so as to prevent lacquering of said under surface, said support further having a central portion formed with a substantially vertical rearward facing surface adapted to engage the extreme forward tip of a finger.

In a finger nail stencil and support, in combination, a substantially parti-cylindrical casing, said casing being split longitudinally into two half portions, said half portions being relieved so as to constitute a stencil for lacquerin a finger nail, a resilient handle, said handle comprising a. bight portion and two leg portions, said leg portions comprising upper transversely extending portions crossing each other, said half portions being mounted on said upper portions, a nail support connected to said half portions and extending upward and forward from said connection so as to engage the under-surface of a nail being lacquered, said nail support being adjustable longitudinally of said casing.

In a finger nail stencil and support, in combination, a substantially parti-cylindrical casing, said casing being split longitudinally into two half portions, said half portions. being relieved so as to constitute a stencil, for lacquering a finger nail, a resilient handle, said. handle comprising a bight portion and two leg portions, said leg portions comprising upper transversely extending portions crossing each other, said half portions being mounted on said upper portions, a nail support connected to said half portions and extending upward and forward from said connection so as to engage the under surface of a nail being lacquered, said nail support being slidably and non-rotatably supported in housings extendin longitudinally of said casing.

In a finger nail stencil and support, in combination, a substantially parti-cylindrical casing, said casing being split longitudinally into two half portions, said half portions being relieved so as to constitute a stencil for lacquering a finger nail, a resilient handle, said handle comprising a bight portion and two leg portions, said leg portions comprising upper transversely extending portions crossing each other, said half portions being mounted on said upper portions, a nail support connected to said half portions and extending upward and forward from said connection so as to engage the under surface of a nail being lacquered, said nail support comprising substantially rectangular shoes at either end thereof, said shoes being slidably mounted .in housings extending longitudinally of said casing.
9. In a finger nail stencil and support,in combination, a substantially parti-cylindrical casing, said casing being split longitudinally into two half portions, said half portions being relieved so as to constitute a stencil for lacquering a finger nail, a resilient handle, said handle comprising a bight portion and two leg portions, said leg portions comprising upper transversely extending portions crossing each other, said'half portions being mounted on said upper portions, a nail support connected to said half portions and extending upward and forward from said connection so as to engage the under surface of a nail being lacquered, said nail support comprising substantially rectangular shoes at either end thereof, said half portions comprising housings extendin longitudinally thereof and adapted to slidably and non-rotatably receive said shoes.
