The present invention relates to metal roofing and more particularly to improved means for seeuri ng ribbed- =roofing sheets to supporting members such as purl-ins, beams, rafters and the like.
An important object the invention consists in providing an improved clip structure over what is embodied in my Patent 2,360,879, dated October 24, 1944. While the two-piece clip disclosed in this patent has proved satisfactory, it has been found that when the continuous side flanges oi the clip interlock with theindentat-ions in the side walls of the ribs they do "not provide positive means for preventing displacement or movement of the sheets relative to the clip. In order to overcome this disadvantage, the improved clip is preferablyformed in one pieceand a; longitudin'al portion or limb extending into the ribbed of corrugated portion of thero'ofing sheet. The limb is provided with laterally extending interrupted flanges projecting altern'ate'lyffromopposite sides thereof so as to engage the interlocking indentations 'in the roofing sheet in orderto'prevent displacement or longitudinal and transverse movement of the roofing sheet relative to the clip when the parts are set up.
Another obj ect' of theinven'tion consists in ,providinga substantially U-shape'd clip ,ior securing roofing sheets to ,purlins or beams, 'in which one of the limbs .of the clip has its upper edge .provided with laterally extending interrupted flanges projecting alternately from opposite sides thereof so as to engage the interlocking indentations in the roofing sheet, and in w-hich means :inthe form .of laterally extending oifset flanges project from opposite sides of either the lower edge of the upper limb :of'the lzl-slraped clip or from the upper edgeof the lower limb was to-constitute stabilizl-aterazt projections which engage the supsnorting member in order to maintain the clip firmly :in a balanced position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description when 'taken in .coniiuncti'on with the accompanying claims and drawings.

Referring to Figures 1 to 4 of the drawings, slil indicates a metal roofing sheet having :one or more longitudinally extending continuous ribs or raised portior rs H,-
and L3-'(-Fig.4) Prefierably the 'side walls of eenter IZ' are provided with spaced interlocking indentations M (Fig.3), which are form-edbIv any suitable means, such-as the roofing tool snown in the above referred to ?atent 2.315038%); and in "the manner and for the purpose hereinai ter described.
In order to nmny secure the roofing sheet l- 0 to a supporting membersuch a; beamor the "1ike,-so-a's to prevent displ'acementof thesheet relative-to the supporting member, new and improved one p'ie'cechoirs-provided which may ass-u-rne various sizes andshapes iii-accordance with the type of building structure which it is who associated. As particularly shown in Figures 1 and '2, the clip is i'nthe or a 's'libstaritial'ly 'U-shaped'fiat mtal member 15' having an upper limb or arm 16 and a spaced lower limb I"! *(Fig. "2); "The limbs f6 and 1"! area'rranged-tooverlap and engage anysuitable fixed supportingrnember such as a wooden pun m or'beani f8 "(Fig '1) The 'l'inib "l 6 'at'its upper edge is provided with laterally extending interruptedifianges' or lugs I 9"that "l'ong'itudinallyspaced 're'c'esse'sill" on each side of the limb so thaittlie flanges 19' and recesses 20 project alternately from opposite sides of the clip and preferably extendthe length of the limb It. The limb I6 is inserted'into the center rib. f2 and the roaring tool. ap lied to the center rib so as to form the spaced indentations 1 (Fig. 4) and also to crimp opposite sides .of the ribs inwardly towards each otherasat '6 3-). Duringtlfls operation, the portions o'f'the fit [2 adjacent the flanges. 1.9 are rounded .or .as at '1 and merged into the adjacentrcrimped portion 6;, while the oppositeside 8 of the adjacent the recess (2e forms an acute angle with-dzliercr-own or itop of the rib. The roofing tool also chimps the-crown or the rib inwardly 'as'zat 9st mammograms assume the position as shown in Figure 3 in order to firmly secure the roofing sheet to the clip by a tenacious and strong positive connection.
The lower edge of the limb I6 may also be formed with offset laterally extending flanges 2| which project outwardly therefrom so as to engage and rest firmly on the upper surface of the beam I8 and provide stabilizing means for properly balancing and maintaining the clip l and its associated parts in firm contact with the beam.
In the modification shown in Figures 5 and 6 the parts are substantially similar to the form previously described, and the U-shaped clip 22 is constructed so as to secure the longitudinal rib 23 of roofing sheet 24 to a metal angle bar or the like 25. The horizontal arm 26 of the bar 25 may taper outwardly and in order that the spaced limbs 27 and 28 of the clip 22 may snugly engage the arm 25, the clip 22 is formed with a complementary tapered opening 29 into which the arm 26 extends. The upper limb 21 of the clip 22 has laterally extending interrupted lugs 38 and recesses 38 that project alternately from opposite sides thereof so as to engage the interlocking indentations in the sides of the rib in a manner similar to the flanges l9 previously described. The lower limb 28 of the clip 22 may have at its upper edge laterally ofiset flanges 3i and 32 arranged to engage the underside of the arm 26 of the angle bar so as to provide a stabilizing seat for maintaining the clip firmly in position.
In the modification shown in Figures 7 and 8, the clip 33 has a horizontal limb 34 and a depending limb or arm 35 which extends downwardly from one end of the limb 34 so as to be of substantially L-shaped construction. The limb 34 is formed with laterally extending interrupted flanges 36 which project outwardly from the upper edge thereof and with stabilizing flanges 31 and 38 that are oflset relative to each other and extend from the lower edge of the limb 3d. The depending limb 35 of the clip 33 is formed with spaced parallel continuous flanges 39 and 40 having aligned openings The L-shaped clip 33 is interposed between the roofing sheet 62 and the rib 43 so that the flanges 36 on the limb 34 interlock with the indentations formed in the sides of the rib 43 in the manner as previously described. The dependin limb 35 is positioned to engage the vertical side 44 of a purlin or beam 45 and is secured thereto by the nail 4'6 which extends through the openings 4! in the flanges 39 and 40.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figure 9, the roofing sheet 48 has a ribbed or raised end 49 arranged to interfit with a complementary formed rib 50 on the end of an adjacent roofing sheet 5! so as to provide a nesting rib structure. The overlapped nested ends of the adjacent sheets 48 and 5| are interlocked by forming indentations in th sides of the nested ribs similar to the indentations M, by a roofing tool such as disclosed in my Patent 2,360,879. The overlapped nested portions of the roofing sheets may be connected to a purlin, beam or the like by any one of the clips previously referred to. As shown, clip 15 is connected to a beam 52 and the limb [6 thereof is inserted in the overlapped nested ribs of the sheets 48 and 5! so that upon forming the crimps 53 in the sides of the nested ribs, the flanges I9 and recesses 20 on the limb I 6 interlockingly engage the ribs in substantially the same manner as the single sheet connection shown in Figure 3. The stabilizing limbs 2| on 4 the lower end of the limb l6 rest on the top of the beam 52 so as to properly balance the clip l5 when the parts are set up.
It will be noted that in all forms of the invention shown, the clip is made of one piece and is provided with laterally extending interrupted flanges and recesses between the flanges so that the flanges interlockingly engage the ribbed roofing sheet and the recesses co-act with the flanges to prevent displacement of the roofing sheet or sheets relative to the clips and the supporting members when the parts are assembled. Thus simple, efiicient and economical means are provided for connecting one or more roofing sheets to supporting members in a firm and positive manner, and which overcomes a defect in this type of connection in which continuous flanges are used to interlock ribbed sheets to a connecting member, and which it has been found not infrequently allows displacement of the roofing sheets relative to the supporting members, with the result that the efliciency and durability of the roofin structure is seriously impaired since such displacement causes leakage and rattling of the roof when subjected to vibrations or high winds and storms.
It is to be understood that the forms of the invention shown and described are merely illustrative of preferred embodiments and such changes are contemplated as come within the purview of one skilled in the art and the scope of the appended claims.
