FIRE-ESCAPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,375, dated October 18, 1881.

Application filed July 2, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josnrn WHITLEY, of Flint, Genesee counly,Michigan, haveinvented a new and valuable Improvement in Fire- Escapes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures ofreference marked thereon.

Figure l of drawings is a representation of a part sectional side elevation of my fire-escape. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view, and Fig. 3 is a View of the ladder.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangementof a fire-escape, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.

A represents an ordinary window-frame to which my lire-escape is attached.

B is a wooden-beam of any suitable dimensions, formed on its under side with a projection, B, as shown, and strengthened on both sides with iron bars 0 (J firmly bolted to the beam. The front end of the beam B is slotted to receive a pulley, D, which runs on a rod or axle, a, passing through and having its bearings in the beam and the strengthening-bars 0. Through the inner or rear end of the beam B is passed a hook, E, having threads on its upper end for the application ofa nut, I). The beam B is to be laid across the window-sill A, in the manner shown in the drawings, and the hook E placed under the inner end of the window-sill, and by tightening the nut 11 the beam is held firmly in its place.

inner end of the beam and its strengthening bars, which rod is of such length as to extend entirely across the window and bear against both sides of the frame, thus formingadditional holds or bearings for the beam.

H is a basket or similar receptacle, provided with loops at d, connected to a hook, e, on the end of the hoisting-rope I, which is passedover the pulley D, for lowering persons or goods from the burning building. This basket is also provided with a rope, J, for guiding its descent aud holding it out from the building.

The beam B is provided with a hook, K, for pulling it from floor to floor of the building, or it can be raised up from the outside by means of an ordinary ladder, L.

.What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, with the beam B, provided with the projection B, strengtheningbars 0 O, and pulley D, of the recessed window-sill A, hook E, and nut b, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with the beam B, provided with the projection B, and recessed Window-sill A, of the hook E, having nut b, and rod Gr, extending through a hole in the inner end of said beam and across both sides of the window-frame, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
