1 Claim. (Cl. 12S-284) l 2 e This invention is an improvement in loin cloths is done before cutting into pieces for the layers 4, or diapers, particularly diapers for infants. so that the whole cloth is stretched at one time. An object of the invention is to provide a This properly enables the rectangular cloth to diaper of special texture and superior adaptabe easily manipulated and shaped to cover the bility, exceedingly easy to manipulate and at- 5 waist, thighs and crotch of the infant, and when tach; and having maximum absorptive power the baby needs the diaper, it is pulled and and Capacity for retaining the Contentsstretched transversely till one of the longer edges The advantages and nature of the invention are along the Sides acquires the form presented in eXplained in the following SpeCiiCatiOny taken Figure 3. Said edge is thus given more or less with the accompanying drawings, Whieh ShOW a of a central bulge as shown at 6, taking up a preferred embodiment of the invention. But I substantial part of the length of the diaper bedo not wish to be limited to the exact structural tween the adjacent rounded edges 1l 1n this features herein set forth, and I reserve the right State the diaper can readily he iii-,ted and put to make alterations that are consistent with the on the child and secured by pins or other fastenspirit and principle of the invention and fall ing devices, as required,
Within the general meanings of the terms in When so attached the diaper is arranged as which the appended Claim iS eXpreSseddepicted in Figure 4. The opposite ends are over- On said drawings: lapped as indicated at 8, at the front of the Figure 1 is a plan of the diaper 0f this inVeninfants body, about the region of the waist, tion laid out at; and then the bulge 6, which is in back, under Figure 2 is a seotiOn on lirle 2--2 0f Figure 1; and below the wearers buttocks, is drawn be- Figure 3 is a top plan 0f the diaper after it tween the thighs and pulled up to overlie the has been manipulated and made ready for use; two ends 8. The three parts 6 and 8 are then and made fast, as by means of a safety pin of the Figure 4 Shows the diaper with its parts in the 25 usual type. At each side along the lower edges relative positions they assume when the diaper are the openings 9 for the protruding legs- These is Wrapped round the Waist and thighs 0f a baby. openings are really larger, and much closer to- The diaper is made of Sel/eral superposed layers gether, but the general arrangement is plainly of cloth, each having the general shape of a recillustrated on Figure 4,
tangle indicated in broken lines at l on Figure 1. The diaper thus nts snugly and its Stretch- Each layer is streihed irl a direction parallel ability in a transverse direction facilitates the to the longitudinal edges 2, as indicated by the handling and adjustment of all parts to obviate arrows, but not orosswise in the direction of the any discomfort The Cloth is readily and quicktransverse edges of the ends 3. The several ly mafie Wide enough to give the bulge 6 and layers, preferably four in number, are illustrated to permit one to draw this bulge forward and at 4. All the layers are sewed together along up to he joined to the two ends :1
their entire edges by lock-stitching which runs The knitted texture of the layers of cloth along a ZigZag line and Crosses iFile edges, as provides numerous small interstices between the indated at 5- looped threads; and the yarn itself is soft enough The textile material of each layer 4 is thread 40 for the fibres to have plenty of capillary attraeor yarn not woven but knitted in either a latch tion for moisture. The ahsorptiveness of the machine 01 a Spring needle Circular machine diaper is exceedingly high and if it receives noth- (14 to 30 courses per inch) and then cut across ing but liquid voided by the wearer, none of to give the Iayer two separate ends The @10th the liquid een run out; but au of n is absorbed is preferably stretched lengthwise first and then by one layer after another, and the maximum cut into pieces for the layers; these are then put effeet is nothing more than a, moist area l0 on one another and sewed as stated; the longi- Whieh may only appear as a damp patch on tudinal lock stitching giving the thread a zigzag the outside, like a spot on a piece of blotting course through the cloth and across the edges of paper, The rubber sheet or other covering the layers 4 at all points After this Operation 50 usually fastened on over the diaper is thus never the garment virtually cannot be stretched lengthmade Wet and nothing ever runs out of the diwise any further; but is elastic and fully stretchaper. Further, when the infant defecates, any able aCrOss the Width thereOf- Figure 1 merely liquid is fully absorbed as before and the redepicts the direction in which the stretching is mainder of the deposit is fully contained. 'I'he accomplished. The Stretching, as stated above, 5# vsoft layers of cloth can be bound tightly enough,
though remaining quite comfortable, to prevent any extrusion of the fecal discharge by the infant under the edges of the openings 9, or at any other point.
The merit of the invention is now made clear, and it will be seen that all the objects thereof are fully attained -by a diaper having the characteristics above described.
Having described my invention, what I believe to be new is:
A diaper comprising superposed knitted layers of material made of soit yarn, the diaper being substantially rectangular, said layers being stretched in the direction of their greatest dimension but not transversely thereof; vsaid layers being stitched together around the entire peripheral edges thereof With the layers in stretched condition, and being extensible transversely of the greatest dimension to facilitate 4 handling and adjusting into position for Wear, so that the diaper ts the wearers body snugly Without causing discomfort, said layers being absorptive in high degree.
