Description

sept.2o,1949. p. w. LAMB l 2,482,675
POULTRY FEEDER f Filed July 12, 1946 INVENTOR PEARL W.LAMB
ATT RNES Patented Sept. 20, Y1949 Y UNITED STATES BENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention refers to poultry feeding cabinets. Objects of my invention are:
To provide an enclosed hopper having perforated bottom controlled by a reciprocated perforated slat slideable under strips secured to the bottom and tapering inwardly to deflect feed material through the associated slat and bottom apertures, the slat being guided in grooves formed in the inner edges of the strips.
"Ioy provide a trough spaced below the feed hopper bottom having hinged frames shielding the trough mouth between its edges and the bottom corners of the hopper.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combmation and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly dened by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawingsY is illustrated one complete example of the physical embodi-Y ment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 represents a prospective view of a poultry feeding cabinet embodying the features of my f invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same, the section being indicated by line 2 2 of Figure 3.
Fig. 3 is a transverse cross sectional view through the cabinet, the section being indicated by line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view through the hopper as indicated by line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring by characters to the drawings, I indicates a hopper, having a downwardly inclined top 2 hinged thereto, the pointed joint in the top being fitted with a channeled combing strip 3 for sealing the joint and said combing strip is also provided with an upwardly projecting flange, which flange serves as a roost for fowls.
The bottom 4 of the hopper is provided with a series of longitudinally disposed discharge apertures 4. The said apertures are controlled by a correspondingly apertured slideable slat 5, which slat is guided by a pair of corner strips 6, 6, the same having downwardly flared deflecting faces, terminating with grooves 6', 6', the said grooves serving to guide the slat 5.
One of the end walls I of the cabinet is formed with a slot and the slat is extended therethrough. The end of the slat is connected by a hook 8, to a reciprocated lever 9 pivoted to an ear extending from the cabinet end wall.
The end walls of the cabinet carry a feed trough I0 and the space between the edges of the trough and the'corners of the hopper form mouths through which the poultry may have access to the feed contained in the trough. In order to protectthe trough and also to facilitate feeding of the poultry, I provided a skeleton frame l I having perch boards II extending from end to end of the cabinet whereby the poultry may conveniently feed therefrom.
In order to prevent poultry from entering the said trough I0, I provided skeleton frames I2, I2, whichV frames are hingedly connected to the bottom corners of the hopper and the free ends rest upon the upper edges of the feed trough I0. The frames are provided with more or less closely spaced transversely disposed bowed springs I2', which springs serve as bars between which the poultry may feed, it being understood that owing to the yielding tendency ofthe bars, they will permit ample entrance space for feeding. From the foregoing description it is obvious, when it is desired to distribute feed from the hopper, the lever 9 is manually manipulated to cause sliding movement of the slat back and forth whereby the proper volume of feed is discharged through the openings 4 into the trough.V
I claim: Y
In a. poultry feeding cabinet, a hopper having side and end walls and a perforated bottom; corner strips fitted into the bottom having tapered faces extending towards the center of the hopper, the strips being formed with longitudinal grooves, a perforated slat slidably mounted in the strip grooves having one end extending through an opening in one end wall of the hopper, an actuating lever pivoted to said end wall of the hopper, a link connecting the extended end of the perforated slat and the lever, a trough positioned under the hopper bottom having its edges'spaced from said hopper bottom to form mouths, frames secured to the lower corner edges of the hopper, and bowed spacingV springs extending from the frames engaging the upper edges of the trough forming separate feeding partitions for the trough mouths.
