Description

Patented Sept. 20, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My present invention relates to an improved grip for golf clubs and is designed primarily with a View toward providing a grip of unique shape so that when the player grasps the handle of the club to swing at the ball, the enlargements on the grip will automatically insure the correct location of the hands and a correct swing will follow.
In the usual tapering cylindrical shaft grip it is possible for the player to place his hands on the grip so that the face of the club head may not strike the ball in a flat position, that is, the face may be wiped across the contact portion or" the ball resulting in a slice, or a hook.
I propose to enlarge the portions of the grip which will t into the palms of the players hands, and these enlargements are eccentric to the longitudinal axis of the shaft and located on the upper side of the shaft so that the player will find the bulges or enlargements uncomfortable except in the correct position.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode I have thus far devised, but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplified structure within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the grip of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 are transverse sectional views at the indicated positions of Figs. 1.
Referring now to the drawings it will be seen that the grip of my invention is suitably secured to the conventional golf club shaft 2 merging therewith at 4. From the point of merging, the grip tapers upwardly, the under side 6 being parallel to and a continuation of the under side of the shaft 2, while the upper side 8 runs angularly away.
At the point I0, the upper face I2 and the lower side 6 become parallel so that the grip between the point I and the point I4 is cylindrical but the axis of the portion between the points I0 and I4 is not co-axial with Ibut is eccentric to the axis of the shaft 2.
From the point I4 the grip swells at I6 in all directions except on the under side to the maximum diameter I8 and then recedes at ZIJ to a 2 depression 22, from which it swells again to the upper end of the grip 24.
It will be noted that at every point along the grip, the grip is circular in cross-section but at no point is the center of the circle co-axial with the axis of the shaft. The under side G is constantly and continuously co-planar with the under side of the shaft 2.
Thus with the players left hand on the grip with the swelling I8 in that palm and with the palm of the right hand about the point I6, the club may only be gripped tightly in the vertical position which will insure that the face of the club head will be at when it strikes the ball.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure `by Letters Patent is:
1. A golf club grip extending above the shaft and being circular in cross-section at every point of its length and formed successively with a lower tapered portion merging with the shaft, a cylindrical portion equal in diameter to the largest diameter of the tapered portion, a swollen portion and a reduced portion, and the center of each portion of the grip being eccentric to the axis of the shaft.
2. A golf club grip extending above the shaft and being circular in cross-section at every point of its length and formed successively with a lower tapered portion merging with the shaft, a cylindrical portion equal in diameter to the largest diameter of the tapered portion, a swollen portion and a reduced portion, and the center of each portion of the grip being eccentric to the axis of the shaft and the under side of the grip being curvd and co-planar with the under side of the shaf FRANK MISHKINIS.
