This invention provides a new and simple construction of a magnetic core for a high reactance transformer device. On the central leg of a magnetic core constructed of stacked E and 'I shaped laminations are concentrically wound primary and secondary transformer coils which are separated from one another by magnetic shunt members located outside of the windows of the main core and which lie in a plane different from that of the plane established by the legs of the main core members. The magnetic shunt members provide a low reluctance flux leakage path so that a portion of the flux induced by the primary coil does not link the primary and secondary coils of the transformer together.
It is an object of this invention to provide a new and simple high reactance transformer core construction having magnetic shunt members which lie in a plane difl'erent from the plane established by the main members of the co It is a further object of this invention to provide a high reactance transformer core construction having an overall length which is less than the length 01 similar devices in current use.
It is still another object of this invention to provide a new and simple high reactance transformer core construction which is economical to manufacture and is simple to assemble.
The invention the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and its'scope will be pointedout in the appended claims.
In the drawing, the flgure shown is a partly broken away perspective view of a particular embodiment of this invention as applied to the construction of a core for a high reactance transformer.
Referring now to the drawing, there is shown 6 and I. In order 8, or the center leg of the E shaped laminations, are concentric primary and secondary coils to achieve a high reactance,
rtain portion of the flux produced by current 5 flowing through the primary winding 6 i byis present in the circuit this repassed through magnetic shunts I, thus decreasing the amount of flux linking the secondary winding I. It can be seen in the drawing that the magnetic shunt paths 8 may be constructed of L shaped laminations having the foot of contiguous L's alternately mounted at either end of the core.
magnetic material, depending upon the characteristics desired. In the drawing,
two shunt paths 8 are shown.
It is not necessary since one shunt path may be used, ing upon the characteristics desired.
This construction diifers from the conventional the legs of the core but will be better understood from therein, by way of example, a high reactance high reactance transformer core construction in that the shunt paths 8, which are located between the concentrically wound primary and secondary coils 0 and l, are not in the plane established by rather in a plane outside of the windows 8 of the core 2. It can be seen, therefore, that the overall length of the core 2 is no greater than that of a standard transformer having a core constructed of E and I shaped laminations. The core 2 may be secured as a unit by any conventional means and in the drawing the bolts ill and the angle bars Ii are shown. in place by filling the ing material i3.
While there has been shown and described a particular embodiment of this invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various be made therein said ,laminations in fixed relationship to one having three legs another, a primary coil mounted on the central leg of said core, a secondary coil mounted on said central leg and concentric with said primary coil, at least one magnetic shunt member constructed of a plurality of stacked laminations, said shunt member located between said concentric primary and secondary coils and separating said coils one from the other, said shunt member providing a low reluctance flux path so that a portion of the magnetic flux induced by said primary passes through said shunt member and coil mounted on the central leg of said core, a secondary coil mounted on said central leg and concentric with said primary coil, magnetic shunt members constructed of a plurality of stacked L shaped laminations having the foot of contiguous L laminations alternately oriented at opposite ends of the body of said L shaped laminations, said shunt members located between said concentric primary and secondary coils and separating said coils one from the other, said shunt members providing a low reluctance flux path so that a portion oi the flux induced in said primary coil passes through said shunt members and does not link said primary and said secondary coils together, said shunt members bein parallel to and secured on opposite sides of said central leg 0! said core and lying in a plane perpendicular to the plane established by said legs or said core.
