UNITED .STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM I/V. HOPKINS, OF THORNTOWN, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE HOPKINS IMPROVED SCALE COMPANY, OF SAME PLAGE.
SUPPORTING DEVICE FOR SCALE-BEAMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,177, dated October 11, 1881.
Application filed January 17, 1881. V (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thorntown, in the county ot' Boone and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Platform and Oounter Scales, of which the following` is ay spccication.
My invention relates to an improvement in platform-scales whereby the graduated beam may be easily read from any point of View.
It consists in mounting the scale-beam or steelyard in a separate movable head adapted to rotate around the axis of the pillar through which thesuspension-rod descends to the levers below the platform.
It consists, further, in a swivel link or clevis connecting the scale-beam and the suspensionrod. Y
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a scale-benin or steelyard and casting supporting` it and the pillar on which it is supported, the pillar being partly in section. Fig. 2 is ay vertical view at right angles to the first, showing the upper end of suspension-rod and its connection with the scalebeam.
a is a casting adapted to receive the bracket b, from which the scale-beam e is suspended by alink in the ordinary manner in a central position within thecasting n. Thebase of cast` ing a is bored, out to tit over a corresponding` projection, c, on the top of the pillar d, the outside ofthe base forming thccapital to the pillar, the object heilig to enable the casting to sit steadily on top ot the'pillar.l and at the saine time be capable of rotation around its vertical center.
The scale-benin is connected to the suspension-rod r, and thereby to the levers below, by a swivel link or clevis, l,in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 2.
In scales as heretofore constructed the scalebeain has been held rigidly in one position as regards its` relation to the platform.
With my improvement the position of the lever can be Varied to suit the direction from which the light comes, or to get out ot' the way of surrounding objects.
I claim as my inventionl. In a Weighing-scale, the scalebeam or steelyard c and its support a, combined with the pillar d in such manner as to rotate thereon, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a weighing-scale, the combination ot' the scale-beam e, rotating support a, lilik or clevis l, and suspension-rod r, as and for the purpose set forth.
EIILLIAM W. HOPKINS.
