e orties LOCK of Connecticut Application March 1, 1945,v Serial'No. 5801384 This invention, while particularly adapted' for use in a padlock, may be embodied in various forms of locks, but by reason of its adaptability' to a padlock suchv a structure is shown for the purpose of disclosing the invention herein.
An object of the invention, among others', is the production of a lockl comprising a unit in which much of the locking mechanism is contained' and which may be, by the use of a proper key, removed from the lock body as a whole either for insertion'v inV another lock body or for the purpose of changing parts of the lock mechanism.
Another object of this invention is to provide alock which is operable by a servicev key and a master key and which, in addition, has aremovable insert unit which can be removed from the lock shell by means of a third, or special, key which may also be usedY for operating the lock; this` diiering materially from previously knownl locks which donot provide for the use of a master key which is not operable for removing the insert unit and therefore provided only for the usel of a service key besides the key' which is required for removing the insert unit. The presentV in@ vention provides for the use of a service key and a: master key besides the key required for removalof' the insert unit.

This insert unit comprises the part' 26 which. is in facta body for support of pin tumblers 21?, andi integral with said body is a sleeve portion 28 within which a master sleeve 2e is fitted to turn. 'I-he said' master sleeve: is. providedi with a stop pinl 33' adapted to enter a groove 34 extending circumferentially in the plug 30, thereby permitting the plug to have a clock-wise movement by the use of a proper key to operate the bolt and release the shackle to unlock the lock.
The sleeve portion 28 of the insert unit is provided with a slot 35 into which a oating pin 36 carried by the master sleeve 29 will enter when pushed out by the service key. This pin will block the counter-clockwise movement of the plug and the master sleeve but will allow a clock-wise movement of the plug and master sleeve to eiect operation of the lock to release the locking bolt. Prevention of counter-clockwise movement of the plug and master sleeve by the pin 3B ensures no chance for operation to release the insert unit by use of the regular service or master keys, as insertion of these keys Will force the pin 36 outwardly into the slot 35 and thereby prevent theuse of such keys for releasing said unit. The special key S'Lhas a notch 38 as'shown in Fig. '7 to clear the floating pin 3S and thereby allow the pin to move out of the slot 35 upon rotation of the master sleeve and permit counter-clockwise movement of the master sleeve to release the insert retainer and permit removal of the insert unit.
The hub of the locking bolt Z is provided with a-recess 39 into which the end o-the plug 3E) enters'for operation of said locking bolt, the unlocking movement being obtained by operation of theplug and locking movement being'effected by `means of a spring, not vshown herein.
Thatform of the lock shown in Fig. is similar tothat hereinbefore described except thatthe locking bolt comprises a part ofthe insert unit and is removed with that unit. `This unit comprisesthe key plug and tumbler parts with the key plug, master sleeve, and enveloping sleeve 28 and for this reason such parts are identified by the same characters as in the preceding iigures and the same keys are employed for operating the key plug in the usual manner and for operating the master sleeve.
The locking bolt it!) is slidably mounted in a chamber il with its nose 42 adapted to engage the' notch in the end of the short leg i4 of the shackle and with a notch G3 in its under surface within which a cam lug 44 projecting from the end of the key plug enters for the purpose of operating the bolt, the lug moving the bolt backwardly to release the shackle and a spring 45 acting upon the bolt to move it into locking position.
It will be seen, from the foregoing description, that a service, or regular key, is used to operate the tumblers and turn the key-plug 3U so as to operate the lock bolt 2U to release the lock. A master key may be used to operate the tumblers so that the master sleeve 29 may be released by the tumblers to permit rotation of saidsleeve and the plug 30 to thereby operate the bolt with the said master keyl in the same manner as it is operated by the regular or service key. In addition, the special or insert key 3l may be used for rotating the master sleeve counter-clockwise, as above described, to operate the retainer for removing the insert from the shell I3.
It will be further understood that the notch 3|-b provides lost motion between the master sleeve and the retainer will permit clockwise movement of the master sleeve and plug 3U to operate the bolt for releasing the shackle lli without operating the retainer tongue 3I'-a. The provision of said lost motion between the master sleeve and retainer provides for the use of a service key and a master key which are incapable of operating the retainer 3l; therefore rendering it necessary that a special key be used before the insert may be removed from the lock shell.
I claim:
l. A lock comprising a body having a chamber shaped to receive an insert unit, a locking bolt movably mounted within said body, an insert unit fitted for housing in said chamber and comprising a shell, a master sleeve rotatably mounted in said shell and having a retainer projecting to enter a recess in said body, a key plug rotatably mounted in said sleeve and having a key slot to receive a key for rotation of the plug, means engageable with a formation on said key to permit rotation of said sleeve in one direction only, means on said sleeve engageable with a formation on said plug to permit rotation of the plug in` one direction only, and an operative connection between said locking bolt and sleeve.
2. A lock comprising a body having a cham-l ber, a locking bolt movably mounted within said body, an insert unit fitted for housing within said chamber and comprising a shell, a`A master sleeve rotatably mounted in said shell, a key plug rotatably mounted in said sleeve and lhavingI a key slot to receive a key for operation of the plug, a retainer mounted on said plug `and'operatable by rotation of said sleeve, means for operatively connecting said sleeve and plug, and an operative connection between thelocking bolt and plug.
3. A lock comprising a body having a chamber,`
a locking bolt movably mounted within said'body, an insert unit tted for housing within-:said chamber and comprising a shell, a master sleeve rotatably mounted in said shell, akeyplug ro.- tatable in said sleeve and having a keyY slot to receive a key ior operation of said plug, a retainer rotatable on said plug and projecting therefrom to enter a recess in said body,means f including a notch in said sleeve for operating` said retainer, means operatable with said key for operatively connecting said sleeve and plug, and an operative connection between saidlocking bolt and plug. y
4. A lock comprising a body having a chamber, a locking bolt movably mounted within said body, an insert unit tted for housing within said chamber and comprising a shell, a master sleeve rotatable within said shell, a key-plug rotatable within said sleeve and having a key slot to receive a key for operation'of said plug, a retainer rotatable on said plug and projecting through a portion of said sleeve to enter a recess in said body, a lost motion connection between said sleeve and retainer for operating the retainer, means operatable with said key for operatively connecting said sleeve and plug, and an operative connection between said locking bolt and plug.
5. A lock comprising a body having a chamber, a locking bolt movably mounted within said body, an insert unit tted for housing within said chamber and comprising a shell, a master sleeve rotatable Within said shell and having a notch in an end portion thereof, a key plug for operating said bolt rotatable within said sleeve and having a slot to receive a key for operation of said plug, a retainer rotatable on said plug and having a tongue projecting through said notch to enter a recessin said body, and an'operatve connection between said key plug and sleeve; the said sleeve being movable in one direction with said plug independently oi' said retainer to permit operation of the bolt by said plug, and the said sleeve being movable in an opposite direction for operating said retainer to release said insert.

A lock comprising a body having a chamber' therein, a locking bolt movably mounted within the body, an insert unit fitted for housing within said chamber and comprising a shell, a master sleeve rotatably mounted within said shell and having notch in an end portion thereof, a key plug for operating said bolt rotatable within said sleeve and having a key slot to receive a key for operation of said plug, a retainer rotatable on said plug and having a tongue extending through said notch to enter a locking recess in said body, and an operative connection between said key plug and sleeve; the said notch providing lost motion between said sleeve and retainer to permit turning of the said sleeve with said plug for operation of the bolt independently of said retainer.

A lock comprising a body having a chamber therein, a locking bolt mounted within said body, an insert unit iitted for housing within said chamber, and comprising a shell, a master sleeve rotatable in said shell, a key plug for operating said bolt rotatable in said sleeve and having a key slot to receive a key for operation oi the plug, a retainer rotatable on said plug and having a tongue projecting through an opening in said sleeve to enter a recess in said body; the said opening providing a lost motion connection between said sleeve and retainer for operation of the retainer and fc-r permitting partial rotation of the sleeve independently of the retainer, and a detent for releasably securing said retainer in position.
8. A lock of the character described, as set forth in claim 7, wherein the said detent comprises a movable pin in the insert engageable with the tongue of said retainer for holding the retainer in position to lock the insert to the body or to permit removal of the insert from the body.

A lock comprising a body having a chamber therein, a locking bolt movably mounted Within said body, an insert unit tted for housing within said chamber and comprising a shell, a master sleeve rotatable in said shell, a key plug rotatable within said sleeve, a retainer operatable by said sleeve and projecting to enter a recess in said body, the said shell having a slot therein, a pin slidable in the wall of said sleeve and projecting into said slot and thereby permitting clockwise movement of said sleeve but preventing counter-clockwise movement thereof, an operative connection between said sleeve and retainer permitting said clockwise movement of the sleeve independently of the retainer, and means including a notch in a special key for permitting Withdrawal oi said pin from the slot in the shell to permit counter-clockwise rotation of the master sleeve for operation of the retainer to unlocked position.
10. A lock of the character described comprising a body having a chamber therein, a locking bolt movably mounted within said body, an insert unit tted for housing within said chamber and comprising a shell, a master sieeve rotatably mounted in said shell, a key plug rotatable in said sleeve and having a key slot to receive a key for operation of the plug, a retainer rotatable on said plug and projecting through a portion of said sleeve to enter a recess in said body, an operative connection between said locking bolt and plug, and a lost motion connection between said retainer and sleeve for operation of said retainer; said lost motion connection permitting rotation in one direction of said master sleeve with said plug, for operation of said bolt when the said retainer is in insert locking position, and unlocking movement of said retainer upon rotation of said sleeve in an opposite direction.

A lock comprising a body having a chamber therein, a locking mechanism, an insert unit fitted within said chamber and comprising a shell, a master sleeve rotatably mounted in said shell, means for removably securing said sleeve Within said shell, a master key tting said sleeve for sole and independent operation thereof in one direction to secure and release said unit, a separate master key iitting said sleeve for sole and independent operation thereof in an opposite drection to operate said locking mechanism, and a key plug rotatable within said master sleeve independently thereof and adapted to receive a key for its operation independent of said master sleeve.
