This invention relates to a device for handling patients. It is suitable for home or hospital use and can be operated and used by one person to lift a patient comfortably for the purpose of changing the bed clothes or moving the patient to another place.

In carrying out the invention, provision is made whereby patients can be lifted and moved with a minimum of disturbance or discomfort by one person, very easily and quickly.

Curved lifting members with wide surfaces or supports of small thickness are provided for the patient and are slidably movable in holders in such a manner that they can be brought under the patient from opposite sides in overlapping relation so that they form a comfortable support without having to lift the patient by hand. The support may extend the whole length of the patient. It can be lifted straight up after being put in place so that it is not necessary to turn the patient over or disturb him materially in any way.

When the patient is lifted and the bed clothes changed or the patient is taken to another bed by means of a truck that can move the device, he can be lowered onto the bed very gently and the fiat lifting members can be easily removed from under him sidewise of the patient and longitudinally of the members without turning the patient or otherwise hurting him.

The invention may be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the device partly broken away with parts in different positions;

Fig. 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is a sectionalong the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 4 is a section along the line 44 of Fig. 1; and

Fig. 5 is a view showing the device in place above a bed.

Reference character I indicates side pieces that are preferably rectangular in cross-section.

or lifting plates 9 having hand holds Ill at the ends thereof are located so as to be slidable'into overlapping positions where they are securely held by flanges 8 against turning as shown in Fig. 3 between the body portion of the guides l and their flanges 8.

Rings l'l (Fig. 5) are anchored at the corners of the device and are connected by straps, chains or ropes 12 to a hook 13 mounted on a standard Hi which telescopes into the tube l5 so that it can be moved up and down by a hydraulic jack it which is carried on a truck i8 and operated in a known way.

When desired, another strap l9 may be provided with a hook 2|] for one of the rings II and attached to a hook 2| at the upper end of the standard 22 telescoping into 23 and operated by the jack 24.

What is claimed is:

1. A device for lifting patients which comprises a frame, guideways pivoted to said frame on opposite sides thereof and lifting members longitudinally movable in said guideways into overlapping positions.

2. A device for lifting patients which comprises a frame, guideways pivotally attached to said frame and lifting members longitudinally movable in said guideways into overlapping positions and means on said lifting members to prevent said lifting members from turning when they are in overlapping positions.

3. A device for lifting patients which comprises a rectangular frame, a plurality of guideways hinged to opposite sides of said frame, curved flanges along the edges of said guideways and lifting plates slidable longitudinally along said guideways into position where they enter at least one guideway on the opposite side.

4. A device for lifting patients, which comprises a rectangular frame, guides hinged on opposite sides of said frame, and supports slidable through said guides, said supports being sufficiently long to span the distance between said sides and overlap.
