UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BAT-DETACHING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 247,976, dated October 4, 1881.v
Application led July 5, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern Beit known that I, ALBERT WILLIS, of Colusa, in the county of Colusa and State ot' Galifornia, have invented certain useful Improvements in Boat-Detachin g Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for lowering and detaching life-boats rapidly, safely, and in a simple manner.
The invention consists in an upright at each end of' the life-boat, to the top of each of which uprights a short arm or beam is pivoted, the
loose end of which passes into an aperture in a beam pivoted to the lower end of lthe upright, this upper beam being held in the aperture by a safety-chain and by a pintle passing through a ring attached to a string or chain fastened to the davitso that when this string is drawn tant by the descending of the boat the ring pulls the pintle out of its aperture, so that the lower beam can drop when relieved of its strain-that is, when the boat 'l'loats--th us permitting the upper arm to swing upward and the ring of the pulley-block to slide from a hook on the upper pivoted beam, whereby the boat is detached from the pulley.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a boat provided with my improved detaching apparatus. Fig. 2 is a plan view of-one of the uprights and the short arms or beams pivoted thereto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parte.'
An upright, A, is -tirmly fastened in the bottom ot' the boat B at each end of the same, and a short beam or arm, 0, having-its free end rounded, is pivoted to the top of each beam A. A beam or arm, D, is pivoted to the bottom of each post or upright A, and the free end ot' this arm D is provided with an aperture, E, into which the rounded end of the arm C ts, these two arms being held together by tached to thedavit O. A hook, L, extending toward the outer endof the arm C, is fastened on the upper surface of this arm. A ring, M, on thelower end ofthe pulley-block N is passed over thishook L, andthe pulley-block is held to the post A bynieans of a safety-chain, P, attached to the block N, and by a staple, Q, attached to the' end of the chain P and ittin g in grooves R in the post A.
S is acushion, block of rubber, or springs at the foot ofthe upright A.
T are the ropes for lowering the boat.
The. safety-chains can be dispensedwith, if desired; but I prefer to use them, audit' the device is not to work automatically the pulleyblock can be attached in a diderent manner; but I prefer the construction described, the above remarks only serving as indications for possible modifications.
The operation is as follows: The rounded end ot the arm C is passed into the aperture of the arm D, and is held in this position by the weight of the boat B, the arm G heilig slightly inclined downward, so that the ring M cannot slip from the hook L. As the boat is lowered the ring H, which is held to the davits by the cord K, draws the pintle G out of the aperture J but this does not cause the arms G and D to separate, as the weight of the boat holds them in their position; but as soon as the boat B begins to iioat the strain is taken from the arm D, which drops, and the arm C is vdrawn upward, as shown on the right side of Fig. l, permitting the ring M to slide from the hook L, whereby the boat is detached from the pulley. The cushion-block S prevents the arm D from dropping on .the tiloor of the boat B and damaging the same.
rlhis device operates automatically, and will vnot be released until the boat touches the water. The staple Q is drawn out of the grooves It as soon as the block M is separated from the beam C.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with thelowering-tacklc and uprights A, ofthe short arms C, with rounded ends pivoted to the top, and the arm D, with aperture E, pivoted to the bottoms of said up- Having thus fully described my invention,`
