Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WPFREDRIOK, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
PRESS FOR BRAN, COTTON-SEED, 8w.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,898, dated October 4, 1881.
Application filed July 6, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. FREDRICK, ot' Indianapolis,in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain useful Improvements in Presses for Bran, Cotton- Seed, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to the operation of hydraulic presses in the compression of various materials into cakes, and has for' its object to accomplish the quick removal without breakage of the compressed cake. For that purpose I utilize the same power used for the compression to force the cake out of the truss or box, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a sectional elevation of a press as arranged for removal of the cake. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 00 m of Fig. 1; and 'Fig. 3 is a perspective of one blocking-piece used for sustaining the press-box.
Similar letters of reference sponding parts.
The press shown is an ordinary hydraulic press.
A is the cylinder; B, the ram or follower, working in the cylinder.
0 O are posts or standards, supporting top plate, F, and the fixed cylinder or platen E.
D is the truss or box; and I is a cap placed on ram or follower B, for supporting the box.
K is a Windlass or shaft, sustained in bearings on two of the posts O,from which chains or ropes ca. pass upward over pulleys b at the top of the press. These ropes carry hooks at their ends for connection to the box D, so that by operation of the shaftby means of its crankhandle to wind the rope the box is raised on the fixed cylinder E.
L L are blocks, one of which is shown in indicate corre- Fig. 3, inserted below box D, for sustaining the same a suitable distance above the cap I. The press is to be operated for compression of the material in the usual manner-that is to say, the box Dis drawn outupon a bench filled with material, and then moved back upon the cap I. Pressure is then applied to ram B by forcing liquid into cylinder A, and box D being thereby raised on the fixed cylinder E, the materialis pressed.
To remove the compressed cake, I raise the box D by operation of the shaft K, place the blocks L on the cap I, and lower the box upon the blocks to-the position, as shown in Fig. 1. Pressure is then applied to raise the ram B, blocks L, and box D, and the compressed cake is forced down and out at the lower end of box D. By these means the cake is quickly removed, and is preserved whole, which is of importance when the compressed cake is of any useful material.
The invention is applicable in the work of pressing sawdust for fuel, compressing meal, bran, cotton-seed, and other material.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a press, the combination, with the moving ram B, the fixed cylinder E, and the press box D, adapted to be raised uponthe said cylinder, of the removable blocks L, provided with side projections, and adapted to be placed between the said box and ram, whereby the .eake will be forcedout of the press-box whenthe ram is elevated, substantially'as set forth. 75
JOHN WILLIAM FREDRIOK.
