As will be readily understood, the various members of the link-system of the chair may be readily made of such a length relative to each other, that the movable members of the chair-are very well balanced and may be easily brought from one position into another. Fig. 1 shows in full lines the movable members of the chair in a sitting position. When the occupant of the chair leans his body against the back-rest I2, he may move the movable members of the chair without great eiiort'from the sitting position into a reclined position as shown in dash and dot lines rod 42 pivoted to the seat I4 at 44 and engaged by a clamping sleeve 46; said clamping sleeve may be tightened on the rod 42 by tightening an adjusting knob 50 on the threaded end of a bolt 48 projecting from the side wall of the chair for locking the movable members l2, I4, I8, 20 of the chair in a desired comfortable position. The locking device is of the same general organization as the locking device 440 shown in Figs. 5 and 6 and described hereinafter in connection with said Figs. 5 and 6.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the footrest 52 is mounted on the rear portion of the base frame I3 of the support I0. Such an arrangement of a foot-rest 52 is advisable, if chairs according to the invention are arranged in rows,
for example, in an airplane, railroad car, or theater. If desired, the occupant of a chair may place his feet on the foot-rest 52 mounted on the rear portion of the chair in front of him.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, H0 generally indicates the support of a chair. Said support comprises two side frames III connected with each other by a wall H5. The rear end of the seat I I4 is pivoted to the back-rest I I2 at I I6. The showing of Fig. 2 is somewhat diagrammatical, the cushions on the back-rest and the seat are omitted. It is self-evident that such cushions may be arranged on the back-rest and the seat, if desired. The back-rest H2 has the extension I24 projecting downwardly from the pivot point H6 between the back-rest H2 and seat of the back-rest I 12, the seat I I4, and the pair of connecting links I I8, I form a four-sided linksystem swingably mounted on the support H0 at H6 for movement about an axis coinciding with" the axis of the pivotal connection between the back-rest and the seat. According to Fig. 2, however, one end of the guiding link I is pivoted to I I4. Again, the pivotally interconnected extension I24 an intermediate point of the front connecting link I20 at the point I54 spaced from the pivotal connection I22 between the two connecting links I I3, I20, while the other end of said guiding link is pivoted to the support at I32 at a point spaced from the pivotal connection I I6 between the foursided link-system and the support. Thus, the chair comprises a first four-sided link-system having three movable links II4, I20, I30 and one stationary link formed by the portion of the support H0 between the pivots H6 and I32 and a second four-sided link-system having four movable links Il4, I20, H8, I24. The links H4 and I20 are common to both link-systems, so that said link-systems being superimposed represent in combination a polygonal compound linkage. The extreme sitting position of the movable members of the chair is limited by a stop I36 arranged on I the support IIO for cooperation with the extension I24 of the back-rest and the extreme reclined position of the movable members is limited by a stop I38 arranged on the support I I 0 for cooperation with the back-rest H2. Furthermore, the chair is provided with a locking device I for locking the movable members of the chair in any desired position. The operation of the chair shown in Fig. 2 corresponds to the operation of the chair shown in Fig. l. The extreme sittin position is shown in full lines, the extreme re- .clined'position is shown in dash anddot lines.
In the embodiment of a chair shown in Fig. 3, 2 I0 indicates the support of the chair comprising two side frames 2H connected with each other by cross bars H5, 236, 238. The rear end of the seat 2I4 is pivoted to the back-rest 2I2 at 2I6.
Similar to the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the pivotally interconnected extension 224 of the back-rest 2I2, the seat 2I4, and the pair of connecting links 2I8, 220 form a four-sided linksystem swingably mounted on the support 2I0 at 2I6 for movement about an axis coinciding with the axis of the pivotal connection between the back-rest and the seat. Furthermore, similar to theembodiment shown in Fig. 1, one end of the guiding link generally indicated by 230 is pivoted to the lower connecting link 2I8 at a point 234 spaced from the pivotal connection 222 between the two connecting links 2I8, 220. However, contrary to the embodiment shown in Fig. l, the other end of the guiding link 230 is pivoted to the support '2I0 at the point 256 below the seat. Furthermore, contrary to the showing of Fig. 1, the lower connecting link 2I8 is bent and has an upwardly extending arm. In spite of these difierences in the construction and arrangement of some members of the chair, the principle of operation of the chair according to Fig. 3 is the same as that of the chair shown in Fig. l. The sitting position of the movable members of the chair limited by the cross-bar or stop 236 is shown in full lines, while the extreme reclined position limited by the cross-bar orstop 238 is shown in dash and dot lines. The locking device 240 may be used to lock the movable members of the chair in any desired position be it the sitting position or the extreme reclined position or any intermediate position.

The sitting position of the movable members of the chair is limited by the cross-bar or stop 436, against which the downward-extension 424 of the back-rest 412 may abut. The extreme reclined position is limited by the cross-bar or stop-438, against which the back-rest 412 proper may abut.
The movable members of the chair may be held in any desired position by means of a locking device generally indicated by 446. According to Figs. and 6, said locking device comprises a rod 442 pivoted to the seat 414 at 444. A bolt 448'having a head 499 and a threaded end 491 is inserted into apertures 495 and 493 of a clamping sleeve 446 engaged with said rod 442. The portion 491 of the bolt 448 has a square cross-section fitting into the square aperture 493 whereby the bolt 448 is prevented from rotation. A tubular member 486 inserted into a hole 481 of the side frame 469 of the support 416 is arranged between the clamping sleeve 446 and a locking knob 456 screwed on the threaded end 491 of the bolt 448. When said locking knob 456 is loosened, the rod 442 may freelyslide in the clamping sleeve 446, so that the movable members of the chair may be readily moved from one position into another one. If the locking knob 456 is tightened, the tubular member 489 and the head 499 of the bolt 448 press against the clamping sleeve 446, whereby the latter is tightly pressed against the rod 442, so that the movable members of the chair are held in the adjusted position.
The arm-chair shown in Fig. 5 is furthermore provided with means for varying and adjusting the relative position between certain of the pivotal connections of the movable members of the chair. According to Fig. 5, the seat 414,
the front connecting link 426, the leg-rest 458 and the support 416 are provided with series of holes 466. As will be readily understood, the pins 426, 432, 454, 464 may be inserted by the user of the chair into selected holes of said series of holes 466. Depending on the selection of the holes, the distance between two or more pivotal connections of the movable members may be changed with the result of diiferent relative positions between the movable members of the chair in various reclined positions. For example, if the user of the chair prefers a less inclined position of the seat in the extreme reclined position than that shown in dash and dot lines in Fig. 5, he may obtain this feature by changing the position of one or more of above mentioned pins. Furthermore, for a still greater variety of the adjustments, the guiding link 436 consists of two telescopic elements 468, 416, which may be held in any adjusted position by a set screw 412. Likewise, the length of the controlling link 462 may be varied by a change in the relative position between the telescopic members 414, 416 forming said controlling link and bein held in an adjusted position by a set screw 418. For example, if the length of the telescopic controlling link 462 is adjusted in the manner shown in Fig. 5, the user of the chair may bring the leg-rest 458 and the seat 414 in alignment with each other when the movable members of the chair are held in the sitting position or a reclined position by extending the length of the telescopic controlling link 462. Furthermore, for
example, if in the sitting position of the movable members of the chair the length of the telescopic controlling link is adjusted in such a manner that in said sitting position the leg-rest is in alignment with the seat, an alignment of the leg-rest with the seat in a reclined position may be obtained by shortening the length of said telescopic controlling link to a certain extent before 1 the movable members of the chair are brought from the sitting position into the reclined position.
According to the embodiment of a reclining chair shown in Fig. 7, the four-sided link- systern 514, 526, 518, 524 is swingably mounted on the support 516 at an intermediate point 585 of the back-rest 512 rigidly connected with the link 524. Said swingable connection 585 is spaced from the pivotal connection 516 between the back-rest 512 and the seat 514. The upper end of the guiding link 536 is pivoted to the support 516 at 532 and the lower end of said guiding link 536 is pivoted to an intermediate point of the front connecting link 526 at 554. The effective length of the lower connecting link 518 between the pivots 522 and 523 equals the effective length of the front connecting link 526 between the pivots 522 and 526. 4

A reclining article of furniture, comprising: a support of connected side frames, a back-rest, a seat pivotally connected with said back-rest, said back-rest having an extension projecting downwardly beyond the pivotal connection between the back-rest and the seat, at least one pair of connecting links including a lower connecting link and a front connecting link pivotally connected with each other, the rear end of said lower connecting link being pivoted to. said extension of the back-rest below the seat, the upper end of said front connecting link being pivoted to the front portion of said seat, a guiding link, one end of said guiding link being pivoted to said support, the other end of said guiding link being pivoted to said front connecting link at a point spaced from the pivotal connection between said two connecting links, said pivotally interconnected extension of the back-rest, seat and pair of connecting links forming a four-sided link-system of a polygonal linkage, said foursided link-system being swingably mounted on said support at a point spaced from the pivotal connection between the support and the guiding link and spaced from the pivotal connection between the front connecting link and the guiding link, a leg-rest swingably mounted on the front portion of said seat, a controlling mechanism operatively connected with a link of the polygonal leakage and said leg-rest for controlling the movements of the latter, means whereby the position of the pivotal connection between two movable links of the polygonal linkage may be adjusted, said guiding link being of variable length, and means whereby the length of said guiding link may be adjusted.

A reclining article of furniture, comprising. a support of connected side frames, a back-rest, a seat pivotally connected with said back-rest, said back-rest having an extension projecting downwardly beyond the pivotal connection between the back-rest and the seat, at least one pair of connecting links including a lower connecting link and a front connecting link pivotally connected with each other, the rear end ofsaid lower connecting link being pivoted to said extension of the back-rest below the seat, the upper end of said front connectin link being pivoted to the front portion of said seat, a guiding link, one end of said guiding link being pivoted to said support, the other end of said guiding link being pivoted to said front connecting link at a point spaced from the pivotal connection between said two connecting links, said pivotally interconnected extension of the back-rest, seat and pair of connecting links forming a four-sided link-system of a polygonal linkage, said foursided link-system being swingably mounted on said support at a point spaced from the pivotal connection between the support and the guiding link and spaced from the pivotal connection between the front connecting link and the guidin link, a leg-rest swingably mounted on the front portion of said seat, and a controlling link, one end of said controlling link being pivoted to said lower connecting link, the other end of said controlling link being pivoted to said leg-rest. 9. A reclining article of furniture, comprising: a support of connected side frames, a back-rest, a seat pivotally connected with said back-rest, said back-rest having an extension projecting downwardly beyond the pivotal connection between the back-rest and the seat, at least one pair .of connecting links including a lower connectinglink and a front connectin link pivotally connected with each other, the rear end of said lower connecting link being pivoted to said extension of the back-rest below the seat, the upper end of said front connecting link being pivoted to the front portion of said seat, a guiding link, one end of said guiding link being pivoted to said support, the other end of said guiding link being pivoted to said front connecting link at a point spaced from the pivotal connection between said two connecting links, said pivotally interconnected extension of the back-rest, seat and pair of connecting links forming a four-sided link-system of a polygonal linkage, said foursided link-system being swingably mounted on said support at a point spaced from the pivotal connection between the support and the guiding link and spaced from the pivotal connection between the front connecting link and the guiding link, a leg-rest swingably mounted on the front portion of said seat, a controlling link, one end of said controlling link being pivoted to said lower connecting link, the other end of said controlling link being pivoted to said leg-rest, said controlling link being of variable length, and means whereby the length of said controlling ling may be adjusted.
10. A reclining article of furniture, comprising: a support of connected side frames, a back-rest, a seat pivotally connected with said back-rest, said back-rest having an extension projecting downwardly beyond the pivotal connection between the back-rest and the seat, at least one pair of connecting links including a lower connecting link and a front connecting link pivotally connected with each other, the rear end of said lower connecting link being pivoted to said extension of the back-rest below the seat, the upper end of said front connecting link being pivoted to the front portion of said seat, and a guiding link, one end of said guiding link being pivoted to said support, the other end of said guiding link being pivoted to said front connecting link at a point spaced from the pivotal connection between said two connecting links, said pivotally interconnected extension of the back-rest, seat and pair of connecting links forming a four-sided link-system of a polygonal linkage, said foursided link-system being swingably mounted on said support at a point spaced from the pivotal connection between the support and the guiding link, and said swingable connection of the linksystem with the support being coaxial with the pivotal connection between the back-rest and the seat.

A reclining article of furniture, comprising: a support of connected side frames, a back-rest, a seat pivotally connected with said back-rest, said back-rest having an extension projecting downwardly beyond the pivotal connection between the back-rest and the seat, at least one pair of connecting links including a lower connecting link and a front connecting link pivotally connected with each other, the rear end of said lower connecting link being pivoted to said extension of the back-rest below the seat, the upper end of said front connecting link being pivoted to the front portion of said seat, and a guidin link, one end of said guiding link being pivoted to said support, the other end of said guiding link being pivoted to said front connecting link at a point spaced from the pivotal connection between said two connecting links, said pivotally interconnected extension of the back-rest, seat and pair of connecting links forming a four-sided link-system of a polygonal linkage, said foursided link-system being swingably mounted on said support at a point spaced from the pivotal connection between the support and the guiding link, and said swingable connection of the linksystem with the support being arranged at a point of the back-rest spaced from the pivotal connection between the back-rest and the seat.
12. A reclining article of furniture, comprising: a support of connected side frames, a back-rest, a seat pivotally connected with said back-rest, said back-rest having an extension projecting downwardly beyond the pivotal connection between the back-rest and the seat, at least one pair of connecting links including a lower connecting link and a front connecting link pivotally connected with each other, the rear end of said lower connecting link being pivoted to said extension of the back-rest below the seat, the upper end of said front connecting link being pivoted to the front portion of said seat, and a guiding link, one end of said guiding link being pivoted to said support, the other end of said guiding link being pivoted to said front connecting link at a point spaced from the pivotal connection between said two connecting links, said pivotally interconnected extension of the back-rest, seat and pair of connecting links forming a four-sided link-system of a polygonal linkage, said foursided link-system being swingably mounted on said support at a point spaced from the pivotal connection between the support and the guiding link, and said swingable connection of the linksystem with the support being arranged at a point of the seat spaced from the pivotal connection between the back-rest and the seat.
