' ATTORNEY WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. TAPPER, or ALDA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROY H. srUAa'r, or HALL COUNTY, NEBRASKA.
WEATHER-STRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,786, dated October 4, 1881.
Application filed April 11,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. TAPPER, ot'Alda, in the county of Hall and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W'eather-Strips; and I do hereby declare that the following is a lull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panyingd rawi-ngs, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l-is a rear view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, of my improved weatherstrip.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to weather-strips for doors, 850.; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a molding to be secured to the lower edge of a door by screws or in any other suit-- able manner, and provided upon its inner side with a recess, B, in which bearings are provided for a longitudinally-sliding rod or arm, 0, forced in an outward direction by a coiled spring, D, and having preferably its outer or projecting end formed with a beveled end, E.
The rod or arm 0 is provided at or near its center with a pivoted tongue or lever, F, fitted upon the upper side of a horizontal verticallysliding bar, G, provided in its lower edge with a longitudinal groove, H, in which a strip, I, of rubber cloth or any other suitable flexible material, is fitted, as shown.
The bar G is provided with a bail, J,in which a flat spring, K, is fitted, as shown, the ends of the said fiat spring being adj ustedoverstuds L in the recess B, so as to force or hold the said bar G in a raised position.
From the foregoingdescription, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The device is to be se-f cured to the lower edge of the door. When the door is closed the projecting end of the rod O,strikingagainstthejamlnforces the said rod in an inward direction, thus causing the lever F to force the weather strip down against the threshold, so as to exclude wiml and moisture. When the door is opened the coiled spring D forces the rod 0 in an outward direction, thus permitting the weather-strip to be raised and the door to he easily opened, especially when, as is frequently the case, the lever or link F has assumed a vertical position, bearing directly down upon the flat spring K, in which case nothing but force laterally exerted against the said lever F will cause it to tilt and raise the weather-strip. The spring D is therefore a very important adjunct to my invention.
I am aware of the fact that automatic devices operating the weather-strip by the clos ing of thedoorare not new. Most forms heretofore used have, however, been objectionable for various reasons. I am aware of the pat cuts to Fisher, No. 35,224; Gowen,No. 237,516, and Bennett, No. 167,820, and ,I claim nothing therein shown; but,
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- I As an improvement in weather-strips, the combination, with the molding A, having recess 13, provided with lugs L L, ot the longitudinally-sliding rod 0, having beveled end E and leverF, near its center, forced in an outward direction by a coiled spring, D, at its end opposite the beveled portion, and the longitudinal bar G at the bottom, having flexible strip I and bail J on its upper side, in which bail a flat curved spring, K, is fitted with' its ends adjusted over studs or lugs L, all combined and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
Inteslimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
WILLIAM H. TAPPER.
