UNITED STATES PATE T OFEI EDWARD E. HERRINTON AND GEORGE W. IRISH, OF GRAND LEDGE, AS- SIGNORS OF ONE-FOURTH TO HIRAM O. ROSE, OF PETOSKEY, MICH.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,759, dated October 4, 1881.
Application filed April 29, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EDWARD E. HEREIN- TON and GEORGE W. IRIsH, of Grand Ledge, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Couplings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a-sectional view, showing pin 13 IO resting on gravitating tongue 0, in position for, coupling the cars automatically when run together. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of our improved car-coupling, with link d resting in inclined groove 1), Fig. 3, which is held in posi- 15 tion for entering opposite draw-head by gravitatin'g tongue 0 falling and resting upon it of its own weight. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, showing the bottom ofthe chamber of the draw head, in which is a groove for receiving the link and holding the same at an angle sufficient to cause it to enter at the center of the opposite draw-head. The groove 1) is depressed from the front backward. Fig. 4 is a top view of tongueO,showingjournalsupon whichithangs upon either side and at the top of the pin-hole S. Fig. 5 is aside view of same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Our object is to combine such feature of construction in connection with the ordinary pin 0 and link as will cause the cars to couple automatically when run together.
To couple the cars automatically with our improved car-coupling, the link dis first placed in position, as shown in Fig. 2, by dropping 5 same into the groove I), Fig. l, which is thus held in position by gravitating tongue 0 rest ing upon it ofits own weight. As the cars are run together the link 01 strikes and presses back the tongue G. upon, which rests coupling-pin 40 B, Fig. l, which causes the coupling-pin B to fall through the link 61, thus coupling the cars.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The manner of pivoting the gravitating tongue 0 inside the draw-head instead of above it. thus avoiding the slot, in combination with the inclined and grooved bottom of chamber b, Figs. 1 and 3, and gravitating tongue 0, 50 Figs. 1 and 2, substantially as shown and described.
