FEED PUMP.
No. 247,704. Patented Sept. 27,1881.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO STEWART, OF SOHENEOTADY, YORK.
FEED-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,704, dated September 27, 1881. Application filed May 21, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LORENZO STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady,in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Feed-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates especially to pumps for feeding water to steam-boilers; and it consists in the combination of the following elements: The pump-barrel, plunger, suctionvalve, discharge-valve, air-chamber, and a regulating-valve intermediate of the pump-barrel and the air-chamber, so that it the regulatingvalve is opened, a portion of the water going through the pump is alternately and continuously forced into and out from the air-chamber, reducingthe quantity of feed-water to a corresponding degree, and hence the action of the pump can. be controlled simply by adjusting the regulating-valve.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents alongitudinal vertical section. Fig.2is a plan or top View.
Similar letters indicate cor: esponding parts.
The letter A designates a portion of the pump-barrel; B, a portion of the plunger; 0,
the suction-valve chamber O, the dischargevalve chamber, each of said valve-chambers provided with any suitable valve; D, the airchamber, and E the regulating-valve.
The plunger B is worked by any suitable connection to the engine, and the valves 0 O are connected to the pump-barrel on the side and near one end thereof, these valves being in a line with each other, while the regulatingvalve E is connected to the end of the barrel,. This regulating-valve E.
as by a coupling, F. is of ordinary construction, the valve proper, a, being secured to a stem, b, and beinglitted to a seat, 0, in the shell d. The regulating-valve E is also connected to the air-chamber D, as by a coupling, G, so that it is brought intermediate of the pump-barrel and the air-chamber.
If, when the regulating-valve is closed, as shown, the plunger B is withdrawn, the water is drawn into the pump-barrel through the suction-valve G, and on the return-stroke of the plunger it is entirely forced out through the discharge-valve C. If, however, the regulating-valve E is opened, a portion of the water contained in the pump-barrel is forced into the air-chamber D on the return stroke of the plunger, compressing the air therein, and on the next withdrawal of the plunger this portion of the water'is forced back into the pumpbarrel by the reaction of the air, while another portion is drawn through the suctionvalve 0 from the supply-source to fill the barrel. Then, on the next return-stroke of the plunger, a portion of the water equal to that' drawn into the pump-barrel from the supplysource escapes through the disch arge-valve 0, while the remainder again enters the air-chamberD. Thusbyadjustingtheregulating-valve E to allow a greater or less portion of the water to enter the air-chamber D the quantity fed to the boilercan be readily controlled.
Another feature of my pump is that it is filled with water at each stroke of the plunger, and thereby the disagreeable slamming noise, and consequent wear upon the valves, produced when attempts are made to regulate the feed by partly checking the supply is avoided.
If the regulating-valve E is opened wide, the water merely circulates to and fro between the air-chamber and the pump-barrel.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a feed supply for steam -boilers, the combination, with the pump-barrel, of an airchainber and an adjustable regulating-valve arranged between, the air chamber and'the pump-barrel, and having its valve-chamber in communication with the pumpbarrel and the air-chamber, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a feed-supply pump for steam-boilers, the combination, with a pump-barrel provided with valve-chambers, as described, of an adjustable regulating-valve arranged in line with the pump-barrel and between the suction and discharge valve chambers, and an air-chamber arrangedabove and communicating with the valve-chamber of the regulating-valve, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- LORENZO STEWART.
