3 Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in bus or car window construction, and more particularly to the vertical supporting posts provided at each of the vertical side edges of the window frame and the vertical sash guides mounted thereon, and within which the window sash is slidably supported at each-of its vertical side edges. An object of the invention is to provide a post and sash guide construction which will permit of the rapid assembly of the sash guide with the post, as Well as the rapid disassembly, while at the same time providing a tight and secure connection between the sash guide and post.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a post and sash guide construction in which the usual bolts, screws, or similar means, employed for attaching the sash guide to the post are eliminated, and wherein interlocking means are employed for cooperation between the sash guide and the post, whereby through relative vertical movement of the sash guide it is interlockingly connected with the post. It is further proposed to provide automatic locking means, adapted to automatically engage in locking position upon assembly of the sash guide with the post to retain the sash guide against accidental displacement.
A further object is to provide post assembly means upon the sash guide, which may be conveniently connected thereto by the same holding means employed for other accessory parts of the sash guide. In the sash guide, illustrated by way of example, in the present disclosure, a removable stop constitutes one side of the sash guide for the purpose of removably retaining the slidable sash therein, and sash-retainer holding clips are provided for cooperation with this removable stop. It is proposed, according to the invention, to employ the same assembly rivets, or the like, for the holding clips and for the post assembly -means of the sash guide. The illustrated type of sash guide also employs a series of pressure springs for exerting pressure upon the sliding sash, and it is proposed, according to the invention, to assemble these springs with the same rivets employed for assembling the sash-retainer holding clips and the post assembly means.
With the above and other objects in view, an embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, and this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, the window sash part of the bus or car window structure, comprises the usual top rail l0, bottom rail H, a pair of side straps l2 connecting the top and bottom rails at each side, the lass panel I 3 being seated at its edges in the top and bottom rails and the side strips. Only one of the side straps and the cooperative sash guide and post assembly is shown. The side strap is of U-shape channel form in cross-section to receive the vertical edge of the glass panel, and is enclosed by a U-shaped crosssection facing strip [4 of'felt or the like, secured thereto by cementing, so that it forms a fixed part of the movable window. sash adapted to be raised and lowered with it. The bottom rail II is provided at its end with a horizontally movable latch bolt 15, normally projected by spring pressure, and adanted to be retracted through operation of a suitable latch lever (not shown), its nose end projecting through slots in the side strap and facin strip for engagement with the rack strip, as will presently more fully appear. The window ope ing comprises the usual sill l 6, and side posts H, the latter being connected at their upper ends to a suitable top rail (not shown).
Upon each of the side posts. only one of which is shown, there is mounted the sash guide assembly, and it is with the attachment means cooperating between the post and the sash guide that the present invention is especially concerned. According to the invention the post I! is preferably in the form of a hollow sheet metal the post I! by inserting the spring grip fingers 33 through the slots l8, the latter being slightly longer than the fingers. When so engaged, the latch portion 51 of the spring lock member is engaged with the side wall of the post at a point spaced above the upper end of the slot !8 in vertical alignment therewith, being sprung outwardly as the sash guide is pressed into engagement with the post. Thereupon the sash guide is forced vertically downward, so that the fingers move downwardly in the slots [8 and engage the inner surface of the side wall of the post below the slots with a wedging or binding action, the clearance between the gripping surfaces of the fingers and the inner side of the sash guide being such that as the side wall of the post is en gaged between them, a spring reaction is set up in the spring grip finger member through the inherent springiness of the metal of which these members are formed. In practice, there may be a slight clearance between the abutment shoulders 34 of the fingers and the inner surface of the base 20 of the sash guide in the detached relation of the sash guide, so that as the sash guide is engaged with the post a slight tilting of the fingers may occur under spring reaction, bringing the shoulders 34 into tight abutment with the inner surface of the base of the sash guide, so that as the wall of the post is engaged beneath the fingers it is tightly wedged so that there is no likelihood of looseness. As the sash guide is moved downwardly to its assembled position the latch finger 51 of the locking spring 54 moves into register with the upper end of the slot [8 into alignment therewith and springs into latching position within the upper end of the slot, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thus retaining the sash guide against upward disengaging movement.
Upon assembly of the sash guide the removable outside stop member 24 is engaged in the groove 25 and slid downwardly to its locked position where the clips 31 wedgingly engage the flange 28. This locked position is secured by means of a set screw 59, provided in the removable stop in such relation that one side of the periphery of its head projects over its inner edge, where it is adapted to engage within a notch 60 in the outer edge of the fixed stop through screwing the set screw inwardly to bring the head into such engagement. Before engaging the removable stop :24, the rack strip 44 and the window sash are assembled with the sash guide.
In order to disassemble the sash guide the removable stop is disengaged and the rack strip and window sash removed from the sash guide. Thereupon the spring lock is pulled outwardly to disengage its latch portion 51 from the slot I8 of the post and the sash guide is lorced upwardly to disengage the gripping fingers from the post, whereupon they are withdrawn through the slots I have illustrated and described a preferred and satisfactory embodiment of the invention, but it will be understood that changes may be made therein, within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In a window construction, a side post having a pair of laterally spaced vertical slots, 2. sash guide engageable with said side post and having a pair of laterally spaced vertical slots, and attaching hook means carried by said sash guide comprising a base portion secured to said sash guide at its inner side and a pair of vertically disposed hook extensions at each side of said base portion extending through said slots of said sash guide to its outer side, said hook extensions being engageable with said slots of said post and adapted to be interlocked with said post through relative vertical movement of said sash guide with respect to said post, each of said hook extensions having an abutment shoulder engaged with said sash guide at its outer side above said slots of said sash guide.
2. In a window construction, a side post having slot means, a sash guide engageable with said side post having slot means, attaching hook means carried by said sash guide comprising a base portion engaged with said sash guide at its inner side and hook extension means extending through said slot means of said sash guide to its outer side, a sash retainer clip engaged upon said base portion, and common securing means socuring said base portion and said retainer clip to said sash guide, said hook extension means being engageable with said slot means of said post and adapted to be interlocked with said post through relative vertical movement of said sash guide with respect to said post.
3. In a window construction, a side post having slot means, a sash guide engageable with said side post having slot means, attaching hook means carried by said sash guide comprising a base portion engaging with said sash guide at its inner side and hook extension means extending through said slot means of said sash guide to its outer side, a sash retainer clip engaged upon said base portion, a sash pressure spring engaged upon said clip means, and common securing means securing said base portion, said clip means, and said spring to said sash guide, said hook extension means being engageable with said slot means of said post and adapted to be interlocked with said post through relative vertical movement of said sash guide with respect to said post.
