to provide, in a grinding machine, a mounting for the grinding wheel with which a higher order of precision of grinding may be effected.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide, in a grinding machine, an improved mounting for the grinding wheel by which, if the grinding operation is interrupted for any reason, it may be resumed without sacrifice of accuracy of the desired initial setting or adjustment.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide, in a grinding machine, an improved mounting for the grinding wheel in which the wheel mounting is rolled to the desired position of adjustment, without change of the height of the grinding wheel shaft.
Other objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the specification and claims.
The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a side or end view of a grinding machine in accordance with the present invention, parts being broken away to show the details of construction Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the wheel mounting in another position and with a different character of work piece;
Fig. 3 is a top or plan view of the grinding machine shown in Fig. 1, parts being omitted to illustrate certain of the details of construction; and
Fig. 4 is a rear elevational view of the grinding machine.
It should, of course, be understood that the description and drawings herein are illustrative merely, and that various modifications and changes may be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated, the grinding machine includes a sup-' porting frame or base III, of any desired construction, having at the front thereof the usual transversely sliding work carrying table II with suitable provisions for supporting the work to be ground. The headstock carried by the table II is shown at 12 and the footstook at l3. The positioning of the table H is controlled by the customary hand wheel l4 carried on a shaft l5, journaled in the frame Hi. The shaft [5 has a spur gear l6 mounted thereon in engagement with a rack l1 secured to the table II.
The supporting base or frame ll] of the machine includes a rearwardly extending bed section l8 having parallel vertical side guide walls l9 and parallel side guide recesses in the walls IS.
A horizontally movable frame is provided, movable rearwardly and forwardly in the bed section l8, the frame 25 having lower side walls 26 slidable along the walls l9 and guide flanges 21 extending into the recesses 20. The bed section I8 is also provided with a plurality of locking bolts 28 for locking the frame 25 in position in the bed section Ill.
The frame 25, above the lower side walls 26 has upper forwardly extending side walls 24, and, at the rear end thereof, is provided with a vertically extending wall section 29 having an upward extension 30. Links 3| are pivotally connected to the upward extension 30 of the wall section 29 by a pin 32. The links 3|, at their front ends, are pivotally connected-by alined pins 33 to a nut 34. The nut 34 is slidable in a slot 35 in the upper part of a supporting carriage 36. A feed screw 31, with which the nut 34 is in engagement, is rotatably mounted in the supporting carriage 36. The feed screw 31, at the front end thereof, is provided with a hand wheel 38 for effecting rotation of the same, and is also provided with an indexing dial 39 for cooperation with an indexing finger 40. A movable stop 4| carried by the supporting carriage 36 is provided for cooperation with a stop 42 operated by the hand wheel 38.
The supporting carriage 36 has journaled therein a grinding wheel shaft 45, the shaft 45 having a grinding wheel 46 mounted on one end thereof and driving pulleys 41 on the other end thereof. The driving pulleys 41 are connected by suitable belts 48 to the pulleys 49 on the shaft 50 of an electric motor 5| mounted on the top of the supporting carriage 36.
The lower part of the supporting carriage 36 is of arcuate shape with the center of curvature in the longitudinal axis of the shaft 45, and is preferably provided with a plurality of gear teeth 52 for engagement with teeth 53 of a rack 54 carried on the movable frame 25.
The side walls 24 of the movable frame 25 may have side guide plates 55 mounted thereon, for engagement by the movable frame 25 and for preventing sidewise movement of the frame 25.
In order to position the movable frame 25 at the desired location, a downwardly extending nut 56 is provided with which a control screw 51 is in engagement. Ihe control screw 51 is journaled in the frame ii! for rotation, and is provided with a hand wheel 53 at the rear end thereof for manual adjustment of the position of the movable frame 25.
The movable frame 25 and the structure supported and carried thereby may be adjusted to movable frame being moved by the nut 56.
When the desired positioning of the frame 25 has been effected, the screws 28 may be tightened tolock the movable frame 25 at the desired 10- cation.
The feeding of the grindin wheel 45 is preferably eifected by movement of the hand Wheel 38 to position the grinding wheel 45' with respect to the work.
If it is desired to advance the grinding wheel 1 .6 to a position for engagement with the work to be ground, the hand Wheel 38 is turned so that the screw 3'! moves the nut 34 rearwardl in the slot 35, and the movable carriage 33 will be advanced forwardly with a rolling movement, the teeth 52 of the carriage 36 being in engagement with the teeth 53 of the rack 54.
If it is desired to move the grinding wheel to a position out of engagement with the work, the hand wheel as is turned so that the screw 31 moves the nut 35 forwardly in'the slot 35. The movement of the carriage 36 in either direction does not change the level of the shaft 45. 7
If it isv desired to return the grinding wheel 48 into a position for engagement with the work, this may be done by turning the hand wheel 38.
By reason of the weight of the movable carriage 3B and the mounting of the motor thereon, the effect of the backlash is eliminated, so that upon resetting of the grinding wheel, no backlash effect is obtained and more precise grinding may be effected than heretofore.
With the grinding wheel mounted in accordance with the present invention, a wide range of operations is available, and, if desired, a small grinding wheel may be used for small work or a large grinding wheel may be used equally well for large work.

1. In a grinding machine, a supporting base, a frame carried by said base, :a rack carried by said frame, an upwardly extending member carried by said frame, a grinding Wheel spindle, a carriage in which said grinding wheel spindle is journaled, adjustable pivotal connections between said carriage and said upwardly extendin member, said carriage having an arcuate portion provided with teeth .for engagement in said rack.

In a grinding machine, a supporting base, a work support carried by said base, a grinding wheel spindle, a carriage in which said grinding wheel spindle is journaled, and means for mountin said carriage with respect to said base for linear movement of the axis of the Spindle in a plane common to the axis of the work support and the aXis of the spindle, said means including 4 a portion on said carriage in rolling engagement with a portion of the supporting base.
3. In a grinding machine, a supporting base, a work support carried by said base, a grinding wheel spindle, a carriage in which said grinding wheel spindle is journaled, and adjustable means for supporting said carriage With respect to said base for linear movement of the axis of the spindle in a plane common to the axis of the work support "and'the axis ofthe spindle; said means including portions on saidibase and on said carriage one of which is fixed and the other of which is in rolling engagement with the fixed portion.
i. In a grinding machine, a supporting base, a
work support carried by said base and havin a horizontal axis, a grinding wheel spindle, a carriage in which said grinding wheel spindle is journaled, and means for mounting said carriage with respect to said base for linear movement of the axis of the spindle in a horizontal plane towards and away from said work support, said means including portions on said base and on said carriage one of which is fixed and the other of which is in rolling engagement with the fixed portion.
5. In a grinding machine, a supporting base, a work support carried by said base and havin a horizontal axis, a grinding Wheel spindle, a carriage in which said grinding wheel spindle is journaled, and means for mounting said carriage for linear movement of the axis of the spindle in a horizontal plane towards and away from said work support, said means including a portion on said carriage in rolling engagement with a portion of the supporting base.
6. In a grinding machine, a supporting base, a rack carried by said base, a work support carried by said base, a grinding, wheel spindle, a carriage in which said spindle is journaled, and means for supporting said carriage for movement of said spindle towards and away from said work support, said means including an arcuate portion on said carriage provided with teeth for engagement in said rack.

In a grinding machine, a supporting base, a work support carried by said base, a frame carried by said base and movable transversely with respect to said work support, a grindin wheel spindle, a carriage in which said grinding wheel spindle is journaled, means for mounting said carriage for linear movement of the axis of the spindle in a plane common. to the axis of the work support and the axis of the spindle, said means including a portion on said carriage in rolling engagement with a portion of said frame, and positioning means for said carriage.
8. In a grinding machine, a supporting base,
:a work support carried by said base, a frame carried by said base and movable transversely with respect to said work support, a grinding wheel spindle, a carriage in which said grinding wheel spindle is J'ournaled, means for mounting said carriage for linear movement of the axis of the spindle in a plane common to the axis of the work support and the axis of the spindle, said means including a portion on said carriage in rolling engagement with a portion of said frame, and positioning means for said carriage including adjustable connections between said frame and said carriage.
9. In a grinding machine, a supporting base, a work support carried by said base, a frame carried by said base and movable transversely with respect to said work support, a grinding wheel spindle, a carriage in which said grinding wheel spindle is journaled, means for mounting said carriage for linear movement of the axis of the spindle in a plane common to the axis of the work support and the axis of the spindle, said means including a portion on said carriag in rolling engagement with :a portion of said frame, and positioning means for said carriage including a guidew-ay in said carriage, a head slidably movable in said guideway, a link connecting said head and said frame, and an adjusting member for positioning said head insaid guideway.
10. In a grinding machine, a supporting base, a work support carried by said base, a frame carried by said base and movable transversely with respect to said work support, a grinding wheel spindle, a carriage in which said grinding wheel spindle is journaled, means for mounting said carriage for linear movement of the axis of the spindle in a plane common to the axis of the work support and the axis of the spindle, said means including an arcuate portion on said carriage in rolling engagement with a rack on said frame, and positioning means for said carriage includ- 6 ing a guideway in said carriage, a head slidably movable in said guideway, a link for connecting said head with said frame, and an adjusting screw for positioning said head in said guideway.
