(Cl. 808-89) Mylnvention relates to a guard more especially intended for use in the journal boxes oi railway cars and has for its object the provision of. means whereby the lubricant conveying waste employed in journal boxes will be prevented from creeping up on the journals during revolution of the latter and becoming lodged between the journals and the journal bearings.
The invention also has for its object the provision of means adapted to provide a comb eileot whereby the strands of the lubricant saturated waste material in the journal box, or any other solid substance, will be combed from the revolving Journal at a distance removed from the journal hearing or brass without, however, interfering with or preventin adherence oi the desired or necessary film or oil to the journal; my improved device causmg the accumulated combines as well as excess lubricant to drop down into the oil and waste holding cellar or well of the Journal My Improved device contemplates a pair 0! resiliently held comb-like portions constructed to eii'ect a constant steady pressure against the journal suflloient to remove adhering strands oi the waste but insuflicient to the oil film on the Journal.
A further object of the invention is the provision oi a. guard which will not inter-tore with the normal packin operation of the journal box and which will be so positioned as not to be subject to damage by the usual packing irons employed: the structure being such that it may be easily applied and readily removed from the Journal box when occasion requires.
The foregoing objects and advantages. as well as other advantages inherent in my invention. will all be readily comprehended from the detailed daeription of the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved waste guard.

Although my invention may be used in connection with the bearing box of any rotating element break or interrupt or shaft which employs lubricant absorbing fibrous material, it is especially adapted for use with the conventional Journal boxes employed in railroad car construction wherein the lower part or well oi the journal with a lubricant absorbing fibrous or waste arranged in?- contect with the lower part at thejournai to apply the lubricant or oil to the Journal during its rotetion. During the rapid rotation of the Journal particles oi this packing or strands oi the fibrous waste ireuuently'adhere to the lournal'and are carried beneath the Journal bearing or brass, arranged in contact with the upper or car-weight supporting sideoi the journal; produces cut journals and is a prevalent cause or hot boxes.
