Patented July 19, 1949 UNITED STATE 5 PATENT OFFICE. wniiiifm William El Mrm. hul villci Kr- A plication sfillmbfl' 16, 1 46, 301181 NO- 591331 2 Claims. (Cl. 808-89) Mylnvention relates to a guard more especially intended for use in the journal boxes oi railway cars and has for its object the provision of. means whereby the lubricant conveying waste employed in journal boxes will be prevented from creeping up on the journals during revolution of the latter and becoming lodged between the journals and the journal bearings.
The invention also has for its object the provision of means adapted to provide a comb eileot whereby the strands of the lubricant saturated waste material in the journal box, or any other solid substance, will be combed from the revolving Journal at a distance removed from the journal hearing or brass without, however, interfering with or preventin adherence oi the desired or necessary film or oil to the journal; my improved device causmg the accumulated combines as well as excess lubricant to drop down into the oil and waste holding cellar or well of the Journal My Improved device contemplates a pair 0! resiliently held comb-like portions constructed to eii'ect a constant steady pressure against the journal suflloient to remove adhering strands oi the waste but insuflicient to the oil film on the Journal.
A further object of the invention is the provision oi a. guard which will not inter-tore with the normal packin operation of the journal box and which will be so positioned as not to be subject to damage by the usual packing irons employed: the structure being such that it may be easily applied and readily removed from the Journal box when occasion requires.
The foregoing objects and advantages. as well as other advantages inherent in my invention. will all be readily comprehended from the detailed daeription of the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved waste guard.
Figure 2 is a partialvertical section and end elevstion of journal and Journal box with the box cover or lid removed, illustrating application oi my improved waste guard.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional plan of oneheli of a journal and 'Journal box and one side or half of my applied guard.
Figure 41s a vertical sectional view of a Journal. Journal box and bearings in possible relationship during certain running wnditions, with my improved guard applied.
Although my invention may be used in connection with the bearing box of any rotating element break or interrupt or shaft which employs lubricant absorbing fibrous material, it is especially adapted for use with the conventional Journal boxes employed in railroad car construction wherein the lower part or well oi the journal with a lubricant absorbing fibrous or waste arranged in?- contect with the lower part at thejournai to apply the lubricant or oil to the Journal during its rotetion. During the rapid rotation of the Journal particles oi this packing or strands oi the fibrous waste ireuuently'adhere to the lournal'and are carried beneath the Journal bearing or brass, arranged in contact with the upper or car-weight supporting sideoi the journal; produces cut journals and is a prevalent cause or hot boxes.
invention is designed to eliminate thedllllcuities mentioned and in the specific exempliflea t tion of the invention consists preferably oi twot;
similar elongatedand serrated elements cr omb like members i II. II preferably of crossseetion and the base or Journal opposing side of each member provided with a longitudinal groove or channel ll extending throughout the length or: the member and the diversi s margin p t o 01" each member on opposite sides oi the channel I I serrated to provide-thevertic l y spaced series or rows oi comb-like. blunt-ended. teeth I! on each member ill. That is to say, the two rows of teeth I 2 on each member It are arranged in flarlne rela i n 0 as o conform with the circumferential cm'vsture oi the journal; and the memhere It preferably are made to taper somewhat longitudinally tow -rd what may be termed their inner non-attached ends, with the distal or free ends on their serrated sides slightly curved or flared outwardly as at it and shown in h 1, to conform with the usual curved shoulder at the inner ehd oi th Journal.
The body-portions or comb-like members Ill. it are mad i'oi any suitable journal non-cutting er non-scoring and wear resisting material, such as a mcldabl'e plastic material 01 a heat, moisture and lubricant, resisting nature.
The two brushes or comb-like members Ill, lb
are secured together and yieldlhgly held in predetermined laterally spaced relation by the ball or spring steel looped wire It, whose ends preferebLv e molded or embedded in the body members Ill as shown in dotted lines at It in Figure 1, with the intermediate portion extendin upward through the upper surface adjacent the outer large end oieach member II) as shown at- It and thence bowed laterally and s uhtly outward from the vertical plane 0! the outer ends oi a condition which
