This invention relates to score registers and more particularly to manual means for indicating cumulative quantities.

Among the objects of the invention is to provide visual means for registering the score gains as in games, such as cribbage; as a substitute for the usual cribbage board wherein movable pegs indicate the respective scores of competitive players.

It may also be used as a paper weight and desk calendar, the number of the month being registered on one side and the date on the other side of the dial case.

Other objects and advantages will appear as the description progresses. In the specification and the accompanying drawings the invention is disclosed in its preferred form. But it is to be understood that it is not limited to this form; because it may be embodied in modifications within the spirit of the invention, as defined in the claim following the description.

In the one sheet of drawings:

Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a score register constructed in accordance with this invention.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same partially broken away as at IIII, Fig. 1.

In detail the structure shown in Fig. 2 comprises the hollow base I, preferably rectangular and adapted to conceal a deck of cards X. This base has lateral grooves to receive the tapered edges 2, 2, of the slide 3, adapted to close the bottom of the base.

The cylindrical case 4 fits snugly within a socket formed in the top of the base and has the flattened portion at 5, resting upon the top 6 of the base, to which it is fixed by the screw 1. The case has the lateral flange 8, within which the flange 9 of the cover Ill snugly fits, extending inwardly to about the center line of the case. These flanges 8, 9, have the alined openings ll, I2, respectively.

The cover 4 conceals the index wheel l3 having the peripheral flange 14, with the consecutive numerals thereon as at l5, that are visible through the opening l2 in the case flange. The hub l of this wheel is fixed on the inner end of the shaft and flush with the hub. This shaft projects through a bearing hole in the case 4 and has the hand knob l8 integral with its outer end, for rotating the shaft and the index wheel l3 thereon.

The spur gear I9 is fixed on the index wheel concentric with its axis. The resilient detent 20 is mounted on the inner plane of the case 4, and yieldingly engages between the teeth in the gear Hi. The index numerals, such as at l5, are on a radial line from the axis of the gear l8 between two of the gear teeth to aline the numerals in registry with the opening l2.

A similar index wheel assembly having the peripheral flange 2| similar to M, with consecutive numbers thereon, registering with the opening H, is mounted on the shaft 22, having the hand knob 23, and operating as above described. The hub of the index wheel on the shaft 22 abuts the hub 15 on the shaft It, to prevent lateral play of these Wheels within the enclosing case and cover, 4 and I0. As a cribbage score counter, the index numerals on both index wheels run from 1 to 60, however the number sequences or totals may be varied to meet special uses.

The present structural design is adapted to production in molded plastics and may be attractively colored and ornamented. For production in pressed metal or otherwise the design may be varied accordingly within the spirit of the invention.

The invention operates substantially as follows: Two players using the score register would choose the more convenient sides or the device for scoring. Each would then turn his knob ill, or 23 to bring into view at I I or l2 the numeral representing his total score of the moment. Turning the knob moves the gear such as l9 beneath the detent 20, which yields until the knob is released, which causes the detent to hold the selected index numeral to remain as adjusted by the knob.

When molded in plastics, the gear l9 can be omitted and the notches 19:): formed in the periphery M of the wheels, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The detent such as 20, is then relocated on the case to engage these notches and perform the same function in registering the numerical digits in the openings ll, l2, respectively.

Having thus described this invention and its mode of operation what is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:

A score register comprising a base; a case having a flat side with a lateral flange with an opening therethrough; a cover having a flat side with a lateral flange with an opening therethrough, said cover flange telescoping within said case flange and forming an enclosing case, said case being mounted on said base; a pair of index wheels within said case and having peripheral indices thereon visible through said openings respectively, each of said index wheels having an axial shaft projecting through the flat sides of said case and cover respectively; a spur gear on the index wheel within said case; a detent on the side of said case and engaging said spur gear; and a second spur gear on the index wheel within said cover; a detent on the side of said cover and engaging said spur gear on the index 'wheel within said cover; whereby said index wheels may be independently rotated by their said axial shafts and held in adjusted position by their detents respectively.
