E. JONES.
PADDLE ,WHEEL FLOAT. No. 247,654. Patented Sept. 27, 1881.
, Ewa/ral Jnc,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD JONES, OF NEW YORK, Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN PADDLE WHEEL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PADDLE-wHl-:EL FLOAT.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 247,654, dated September 2'?, 1881.
Application filed February 1, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD JONES, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paddle -Wheel Floats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereo'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofthis specification, in which- Figure l represents a blade or bucket in elevation, and Fig.2 a crosssection of the same on the line :v a', embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents apaddle-Wheel provided with my improved floats.
This invention relates to that type ot' paddlewheel in which the blades or buckets are arranged at an angle to the line ot' motion of the wheel, as shown in Letters Patent of the United States granted to me March 6, 1866, and numbered 53,008.
In said Letters Patent the blades or buckets are shown with increasing breadth of propelling-surface from the inboard or entering end to the outboard or emerging end, the lower edge of the blade being formed in a convex curve.
This invention consists in constructing the blades or buckets in substantially the form described, aud bending the same transversely or Widthwise to present a convex propelling-surface.
In order that others may understand and apply my invention, I will first proceed to dcscribe its construction and subsequently to set forth its advantages, and to point out in the claim its novel features.
The blade or bucket represented in the draw- .ings show substantially the form embodying my improvement, the transverse convexity of the propelling-surface being clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, and intended to represent a degree of transverse curvature of about two inches to each foot of breadth-surface.
The advantages resulting from such construction, when compared with a straight or inclined transverse surface, lie in avoidin g the great loss of power due to the action of the latter in passing through and emerging from the water in a circular path, and lifting large quantities of the same without deriving a propelling-force, and when used in the arrangement shown in myformer Letters Patent referred to a perfect utilization ot' the motive power is secured by an increased number of revolutions of the wheels and an acceleration in the speed of the vessel.
In applying my improved blade or bucket, one or more series may be used, it' desired, as shown, for example, in Letters Patent` of the United States granted to R D. Ohatterton, July 24, 1844, No. 3,679.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A paddle-wheel provided with one or more series of blades or buckets arranged at an angle to the line of motion, constructed with increased breadth at or toward the outboard end and bent to present a transverse convex propelling-surface, substantially as described.
EDWARD JONES.
