DIE
Filed July 19, 1946 5 Sheets-Sheet 5 Inventor DU/VALD 0 .D/SBENNET Patented July 19, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DIE Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in dies for use particularly in the manufacture of Us and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a novel construction and arrangement whereby production will be substantially increased as compared with means and methods in use at present.
Another very important object of this invention is to provide a die of the aforementioned character which is adapted to be expeditiously opened to facilitate the removal of the finished article therefrom.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a die of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
' Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a die constructed in accordance with the present invention.
' Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the device.
Figure 5 is a view in vertical longitudinal section, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a view in horizontal section through the device.
Figure 7 is a cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 'I'I of Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 88 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that reference numeral I designates an end portion of a hollow cylinder having apertured ears 2 therein. This end portion of the cylinder I further includes an apertured external flange 3.
The ears 2 receive bolts 5 which project from one end of a core 6 for mounting said core on the cylinder I in a manner to project longitudinally therefrom. The core 6 includes, on its forward end portion, a depending, removable bell I of substantially the shape shown to advantage in Figures 5 and '7 of the drawings. The lower, forward end portion of the core 6 is recessed, as at 8, to accommodate the upper end portion of the removable bell. A socket 9 in the upper end portion of the bell I accommodates a retaining pin III which has a shank portion threaded into said forward end portion of the core 6.
Mounted on the cylinder I is a ring II which encircles the adjacent end portion of the core 6 in spaced, concentric relation thereto. The ring II includes, on one end, an external apertured flange I2 which is bolted, as at I3, to the flange 3 of the cylinder I. Headed pins I4 project from diametrically opposite sides of the ring II, the purpose of which pins will be presently set forth.
Rising from the ring I I is a longitudinally elongated eye I5. A shaft I6 is mounted in the eye I5. Suspended from the shaft I6 is a mold H the walls of which are spaced from the core 6, including the bell I.
The mold II comprises a pair of complemental half sections I8 which are hinged at I9 on the shaft I6. Hooks 20 on the half sections I8 detachably connect the mold I! to the ring II, said hooks being engageable with the pins I4.
The mold II, it will be observed, is substantially in the form of an elbow and comprises a substantially bell shaped end portion 2| which conforms to the shape of the lower portion of the member I. Dependin from diametrically opposite sides of the portion 2-I of the mold I1 is a pair of fixed keepers 22. A double ended latch 23 is pivotally secured at an intermediate point, as at 24, on the bottom of the bell 'I. The end portions of the latch 23 are engageable with the keepers 22 for supporting the bell I in the mold I1 and for preventing the sections I8 of said mold from opening.
It is thought that the operation of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the clay is pressed into the mold II around the core 6 with the bell 1 thereon until said mold is full. The latch 23 is then disengaged from the keepers 22 and the bell I is removed. The hooks 20 are disengaged from the pins I4 and the mold sections I8 are swung upwardly to open position on the shaft I6, as suggested in broken lines in Figure '7 of the drawings,
after which the L may be readily removed from the core 6, having been previously severed through the medium of a suitable wire at the joint between the ring I I and the mold II. A nut 25 is threaded on one end portion of the shaft I6 for adjusting the mold II longitudinally. After the L has been removed, the sections I8 are closed, the hell I is inserted and secured and the device is again ready for operation.
It is believed that the many services of a die constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A die of the character described comprising a cylinder a substantially elbow-shaped mold mounted on one end of the cylinder, said mold including a pair of complemental hingedly con nected half sections, a core mounted on the cylinder and extending into the mold in spaced relation thereto, said core having a recess on the end thereof remote from saidv cylinder said. core including a removable, angularly extending end portion, and means for removably securing said end portion of the core in said recess comprising a retaining pin on said core extendin into said recess, a socket in one, end of said end por tion to receive said retaining pin, a latch carried by said. end portion, and keepers on said sections to engage said latch,
2. A die of character described comprising a hollow cylinder, a ring mounted on one end of said cylinder, a rod mounted on said ring, a substantially elbow-shaped mold including a pair of complemental half sections hingedly suspended from the rod, a core rigidly mounted on the cylinder in spaced, concentric relationto the rin and the mold, said core including a removable, substantially right-angularly extending end portion, and means for-removably securing said end portion of the core in the mold.
3. A die of the characterdescribed comprising a hollow cylinder, aperturedears in said cylinder, a mold mounted longitudinally on one end: of the cylinder and including a pairoi hingedly connected complemental half sections, a core, and elements on said core engaged in the ears for supporting said core onthe cylinder in spaced, concentric relation-to the mold.
4. A die of the character described comprising a hollow cylinder, apertured ears in one end portion of said cylinder, a ring onzsaid'one end of the cylinder, a rod mounted on the ring and projecting longitudinally therefrom, a substantially elbow-shaped mold comprising a pair oi complemental half sections hingecny suspended from the rod, a core, bolts projecting longitudinally from one end of the core and engaged in the ears for mounting said core on the cylinder in spaced, concentric relation to the ring and the mold, said core including a right angularly extending, removable end portion, means for detachably connecting the mold sections to the ring, and means for removably securin said removable end portion ofthe core in the mold.
5. A die of the character described comprising a hollow cylinder, apertured ears in one end portion of said cylinder, a ring on said one end movable end portion of the corein' the mold, the
last-named means comprising fixed keepers de pending from the mold, a latch pivotally secured, at an intermediate point, on the removable end portion of the core, the end portions of said latch being engageable with the keepers, said removable core portion having a socket therein; and a pin carried by the main portion of the core and engaged in the socket.
