Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILAS T. SAVAGE, OF ALBANY, YORK.
COAL-SIEVE.
Specification of Letters Patent N o. 24,761, dated July 12, 1859.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAs T. SAVAGE, of Albany, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Sitters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference beA ing had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a coal sifter substantially in the manner hereinafter described.
In the drawings A, and B, represent two half globes, cast of a suitable thickness and provided with interstices c, c, c. To each of these half globes is casttwo half trunnions, those on one half of said globe being pro vided with tongues, which fit snugly into grooves in those on the other halt' of the globe, as is shown in Fig. l, at a and b. The groove Z), in the half trunnion does not extend the entire length of said trunnion, but extends from the inside of the globe to the shoulder ir, a". The tongue a, is made to tit the groove, and the outer ends of the tongues fitting against the shoulders a, ai, the two portions of the globe are prevented from sliding endwise of the trunnions and are more securely held in proper position. This globe when cast and ready for use is Secured in a box or cylinder which has a suitable cover, its trunnions resting in bearings in the sides of the same.
In using this sifter the top of the box or cylinder is removed, one half of the globe is raised, and the cinders are placed in the other half of the globe. The half globe and the top of the box are then adjusted in proper position and al revolving motion is communicated to the globe by means of its handle E. The ashes fall through the interstices from the globe into theboX or cylinder, and thus the cinders are freed from thein.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent isH The employment of the two half globes A, and B, in which there are interstices c, c, c, as a coal sifter when said half globes are provided with half trunnions, which are provided with grooves 7), b, tongues a, a, and shoulders a', the same being used in connection with a box or cylinder, by means of which the two portions of the globe are prevented from moving endwise of the trunnions and are prevented from separating substantially as set forth.
S. T. SAVAGE.
