UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. ROBERTS, ()F MILLEDGEVILLE, KENTUCKY.
HORSE-POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,519, dated September 27, 1881.
' Application filed August 3, 1881. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. RoBERTs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Milledgeville, in the county of Lincoln and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse- Powers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal verticalsectional view; and Fig. 3 is a side view.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to horse-powers and similar mechanical motors; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the below wheel G, said wheel engaging a pair of pinions, J K, upon shafts L M, arranged intermediate between the shafts E and H. The pinions J K are each of less than half the thickness of the cog-wheel I, thus permitting the said pinions to work one above the other, and the shafts to be arranged more closely together, thus saving space. For the upper ends of the several shafts suitable bearings are provided in the top or cap plate, D. The bottom plate, 0, is formed or cast with upwardprojectin g boxes .N, for the lower ends of said shafts, the extreme lower ends of which project below the bottom plate, and are confined within boxes 0, constructed upon the under side of the said bottom frame, and forming legs for the machine. The boxes 0 are provided with slidecovers P, to prevent the admission of dirt and gravel to the shafts, and to permit the bearings t-o bereadily cleaned.
The main shaft E is provided near its upper end with a square portion, Q, above which it terminates in a threaded end, It. Upon the said square end of the main shaft is adjusted a sweep-holder, S, consisting of a rectangular block, T, having a central square perforation to admit of said adjustment, and provided with side flanges, U, to accommodate the sweep. The latter, which is denoted by V, is secured to the holder by bolts and nuts, one of thelatter, being the one which also serves to secure the holder upon the main shaft.
From the foregoing description the operation of this invention will be readily understood. It is simple, convenient, and easily operated Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- 1. As an improvement in horse-powers, the combination of the frame A, the vertical shafts journaled in said frame, the masterwheel E, the cogwheels G I, and the pinions J K, engaging the lower oog wheel and moving one above the other, as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. 1n horse-powers, the herein-described lower frame-plate having bearings for the lower ends of the vertical shafts, which are sur-' WILLIAM ALEN ROBERTS.
