FILM REEL Filed Jan. 5, 1946 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 IN VE N TOR a r pgm A TTOR/VE Y5 Patented July 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I FiLM REEL Miguel Lpez-Henriquez, ,New York, N. Y. Application January '5, 1946, serial Ne. 639,176 7 Claims. (01. 242 -41) This invention relates to a film reel and spindle mount therefor.
An object of the invention is to provide a new and useful improvement on the reel and spindle mount set forth in my copending application entitled Film rec-1" Serial Number 591,693 filed May 3, 1945, which enemas the film to-be unwound from the center of the reel to eliminate the necessity of re'wintlihg of the film.
A further object is to provide a construction which is much simpler, more easily assembled and adjusted than other similar types of reels.
A further object is to provide a simple and ef= ficient means to insure that when the parts are assembled they bear definite space relations which will enable proper and easy withdrawal of the film from the reel.
A still further object is to provide a strong positive construction which will enable the reel and its supporting element to be quickly and easily with a minimum of effort, attached tn the standard reel arm of a projector.
Briefly and in general terms, the reel support ing element is a simple arm to he slipped over a bushing and rocked in place by a nut. The bushing receives the stub shaft of projector reel arm. The hub of the projector reel arm is surrounded by a cupshaped Collar member on the bushing and a set screw thereon engages the hub to fasten the bushing and collar in any position around the hub. The reel supporting at brie end has rollers to pass the film, and at the other end the arm is provided with a fiat flange supporting a Spindle which is in general circular but has a squared portion just below its top to support the upper plate of the reel. The lower plate of the reel has a square hole to permit the passage of the squared part or the spindle. The upper end of the spindle has keys thereon and the upper plate of the reel has a circular opening with oppositely extending keyways to receive the keys on the spindle andlock the upper plate to the spindle against turning and position it with respect to a large gap between the spokes of the upper plate through which gap the film is easily and withouthindrance withdrawn from the reel.
Other features will be apparent from a oonsideration of the specification hereinafter when taken in cenneetioii with the accompanying draw ings which form part of the specification.
The present preferred former the invention is illustrated in the drawings, of w'hieh,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the reel and its support.

The reel is formed of two spaced wheels-l0 and l l respectively remiss the and lower sides thereof. The lower wheel I I has as usual the regularly spaced stokes l2 connecting its r'i'rn portion with its central huh portion 1 3 (Figure 4-) and the upper piste it also has spokes-l4 regularly spaced err-test at a portrait wh'ere-theinner end or the fiim ls is withdrawn item the center of the rolled mm. In this portion the spoke is omitted to provide an 'eii'tra large gap permitting the free e'zi'it er the film, This is in accordance with the construtibfi set forth in the ahove mentioned applieatien. The reel is adaptedtobe supported in a horiz'ontalpiis'itioii as sliow'r'iiri Figures. 1 and 2 on a supportin aeviee whit-n is: connected to the reel armof any 8911 16 projector. This support is pre idea with a vertitai spindle haeiretiiar generai cross section and provided at its top" with ODDos'itly entertains, k '26."-26. adapted to he in the art-eye mentioned rey Ways 19-49, and thus hold the ii per tvh eel. m statiefisry with respect to the Supporting. devis Just wow he re s 25-45 tn the spans 25 its section is squared as at 32. This squared section will pass through the squared opening [6 in the lower wheel H and will act as a support for the upper wheel l which as shown will rest thereon. It is so positioned on the spindle 25 that this disposition will hold the parts in their proper relation. The keys 26-26 aline with two opposed corners of the square portion 32,
The supporting device comprises an exteriorly threaded hollow bushing 26' adapted to receive a stub shaft 2i extending from the arm 28 of a projector, and also has adjacent the bushing at one side, a cup shaped member 29 surrounding the hub 34: of said projector arm 28 and is fastened thereto by means of a set screw 3| on the member 29 and forced into bearing contact with the periphery of the hub 30. This arrangement permits the reel arm and supporting device to be adjusted on the arm projector 28 at any desired angle b merely turning th bushing until the desired angle of support is attained when the set screw is tightened to hold it in that position.
The support for the spindle 25 is a fiat flange 33 bent over from one end of an arm 34 the outer end of which supports rollers 35-35 through which the unwinding film I passes. The other end of this arm 34 is perforated to slip over the threaded bushing 26 and is held in place against the rear face of the cup-shaped portion of the bushing by means of a washer 36 and a nut 31, which gives certain tension to arm 34 and permits it to be adjusted at an desired angle without disturbing the adjustment of the set screw.
In the operation of the device, the two wheels l8 and H with the film rolled therebetween is placed on the spindle 25 by passing the spindle through the squared hole 16 whereupon it will move up until the squared portion 32 thereon abuts the under face of the upper wheel ID at which time the end of the spindle 25 will lie in the circular hole I8 with the keys 2B28 disposed in the respective key-ways Iii-I9. Thus the upper wheel IE) will be held from turning while the lower wheel I l carrying the bevelled hub 23 with the film wound around it is able to turn as the inner end of the film is pulled out in the manner described in the above mentioned application. The keys and key-ways are so arranged that when they engage, the large gap between the spokes M of the upper wheel will lie directly in line with a line drawn through the keys Iii-49 so as to definitely position the upper plate on the spindle 25 with respect to the point at which the film is withdrawn from the roll of film.
While the invention has been described in detail with respect to a present preferred form which the invention may assume, it is not to be limited to such details and form since many changes and modifications may be made in the device without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in its broadest aspects. Hence it is desired to cover any and all forms and modifications of the invention which may come within the language or scope of any one or more of the appended claims.
