SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,435, dated September 20, 1881.

To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, GLAUs THELANDER, of Salina, in the county of Saline and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Grain-Headers, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the dropping of the cut grain in gavels and promote convenience in operating the machines.
The invention consists in the combination, with the platform-frame and its endless apron, the elevator-frame and its two endless aprons, and a driving mechanism, of the bar and arms carrying the upright rods, the sliding frame carrying two sets of horizontal rods, the stationary frame, and the adjusting-rope, whereby the cut grain can be dropped to the ground in gavels; also, in the combination, with the drive-rollers of the endless aprons and the axle and drive-wheels, of the three gear-wheels, the
' jointed shaft, and the two gear-wheels.
A represents the drive-wheels, which are connected with the axle B by pawls and ratchetwheels O. The axleB revolves in slots in the standards D, attached to the frame E, to the forward part of which is attached the platform-frame F. The frame E is supported by pins G, which pass through holes in the slotted standards D. Above the axle B, and the bearings in which the said axle works, several holes are formed in the slotted standards D, to receive the supporting-pins G, so that the frames E F can be adjusted closer to or farther from the ground, as may be required.
To the axle B,-or to the bearings ot' the said axle, is hinged the cross-bar or roller H, to which the forward end of the tongue I is attached.
To the rear end of the tongue I is attached a vertical cross-bar, J, to which is hinged an upright standard, K.
To the lower end of the standard K is journaled a small wheel, L, and to the upper end of the said standard K is rigidly attached a forwardly projecting lever, M, so that the standard K and Wheel L can be readily turned to guide the machine by operating the lever M. The driver stands or sits upon the platform N, attached to the tongue I, in front of the cross-bar J.
To the side of the tongue I, at a little distance from its forward end, is attached the inner end of an arm, 0, the outer part of which is strengthened in position by a bar, P. The rear end of the bar P is rigidly attached to the arm 0 at a little distance from its outer end, and the forward end of the said bar rides upon the axle B at the outer side of the drivewheel A.
To the end of the axle B, at the outer side of the bar P, is secured a large beveled-gear wheel, Q, the teeth of which mesh into the teeth of a small beveled-gear wheel, R, placed upon the shaft S. The gear-wheel 1% runs loose upon the shaft S, and is made to carry the said shaft with it in its revolution by a clutch, 'l, sliding upon the said shaft, but revolving with it. The clutch T is grooved to receive the forked end of the rod U, which slides in guides attached to the arm 0, and to its outer end is pivoted the end of a lever, V. The lever V is fulcrumcd to the middle part of the ar.n O, and its inner end is pivoted to the forward end of arod, W, which slides in guides attached to the tongue I, and is pivoted at its forward end to the lower end of a lever, X. The lever X is pivoted to a standard, Y, attached to the tongue I, and its upper end projects into such a position that it can be readily reached and operated to throw the gear-wheel B into and out of gear with the gear-wheel Q. The gear-wheel Q is held forward against the gear-wheelR by a roller, 30, pivoted to the bar 1? at the rear side of the said gear-wheel. The shaft S revolves in bearings in the arm 0 and platform-frame F, and in supports Z, attached to the said tongue and frame, and has two universal joints formed in it, so that the movements of the tongue I and platform-frame F will not affect the gear-wheels To the shaft S, near its forward end, is attached an internally-toothed gear-wheel, a, the teeth of which mesh into the teeth of two small gear-wheels, I) 0, attached to the ends of the rollers 01 e. The rollereis journaled to the front and rear bars of the platform-frame F, neartheir ends, and gives motion to the endless apron f of the platform-carrier, which passes around a roller, g, pivoted to the outer ends of the said front and rear bars. The roller 61 gives motion to the lower endless apron, h, of the elevator, and is pivoted to the ends of the front and rear bars of the platform-frame F, and to'the lower ends of the side bars of the elevator-frame i, and thus hinges the elevatorframe 01 to the platform-frameF. The lower endless apron, h, of the elevator passes around the roller (2 and around the rollerj, pivoted to the lower parts of the upper ends of the side bars of the elevator-frame t". The upper endless apron, h, of the elevator passes around the rollers Z 111, pivoted to the upper parts of the upper and lower ends of the side bars of the elevator-frame t. The lower roller, m, is rotated to drive the endless apron k by a band, 29,passing around pulleys attached to the ends of the rollers d m.
The inner sides of the side bars of the elevator-frame t have grooves formed in or upon them, to receive the edges of the endless aprons h k, and prevent the grain from getting between the said edges and side bars and impedin g the movements of the said aprons. With this construction, as the cut grain falls upon the platform of the machine it is carried by the endless apron f to the endless aprons h is, is carried up by and between the said aprons h 7c, is discharged from their upper ends, and falls between the upright rods a 0 to and rests upon the horizontal rods 12, the rods 12 019 thus forming a box to receive the gavels. The upper ends of the rods '0 are attached to a crossbar of the elevator-frame t". The upper ends of the rods a are attached to a cross-bar, g, which is connected with the upper part of the elevator-frame t by the arms 1'. The ends of the space between the rows of upright rods n 0 can be closed by plates 31, or by upright rods 32, as shown in Fig. 4, and the upper ends of the said plates or rods are attached to the arms r. The horizontal rods 19 are attached at their inner ends to a cross-bar of the horizontal frame s,which rests and slides upon the side bars of the horizontal frame it, and is kept in place by keeper to, attached to the said frame t. The frame t is rigidly attached to the elevator-frame z.
To the outer ends of the side bars of the sliding frame 8 are attached the lower ends of two bars or posts, o, the upper ends of which are connected by a cross-bar, to.
To the cross-bar w are attached the outer ends of the horizontal rods :10, the inner ends of which are about over the adjacent ends of the horizontal rods 11. With this construction, when enough grain has been collected for a gavel the sliding frame 8 is drawn inward, which withdraws the rods 1) from beneath the grain and allowsthe gavel to drop to the ground, at the side of the machine, and out of the way of the said machine in its next round.
To the inner cross-bar of the sliding frame sis attached the end of the rope or chain g, which passes around guide-pulleys a, mounted on the frame of the machine, and its other end is connected with the standard Y in such a position that the driver can readily reach and operate the said rope or chain to draw the said frame 8 inward and drop the gavel. The sliding frame 8 is moved outward, when the rope or chain 3 is released, by springs 10, connected with the said frame and with the elevatorframe i, or a bar attached to the said elevatorframe.
To the elevator-frame-i, or to a bar attached to it,is attached the end of a rope or chain, 1, the other end ofwhich is attached to an upwardlyprojecting bar, 2, attached to the vertical frame 3,that supports the reel-posts, and is attached to the inner part of the platform-frameF. With this construction the elevator-frame i and its attachments can be raised and lowered by adjusting the said rope or chain 1.
4 are the reel-bars, the ends of which are attached to the outer ends of the arms or spokes 5. Theinner ends of the arms5are attached to or formed upon the hubs 6, to which are also attached the inner ends of the inclined spokes or arms 7. The outer ends of the inclined arms or braces '7 are attached to the reel-bars 4 at a little distance from their ends. The journals of the reel revolve in hearings in the outer parts of the reel posts or supports 8 9. Several holes are formed in the posts 8 9 to receive the reel-journals, so that the reel can be adjusted forward and back as required. The rear end of the reel post or support 8, adjacent to the elevator, is pivoted to a post of the frame 3. The forward part of the reel-post 8 is supported by a brace, 11, the upperend of which is attached to the said reel-post 8, and its lower end is secured to the lower part of the post of the frame 3 by a pin or bolt. Several holes are formed in the post of the frame 3, to receive the fastening-pin of the brace 11, so that the said brace can be readily adjusted to ad just the reel at a greater or less distance from the platform, as may be desired. The reel post or support 9 farthest from the elevator is pivoted to a post of the frame 3, and its rear end is secured to the post 12, attached to the rearwardly-projectin g end bar of the platform frame F, so that the said reel-post can be readily adjusted to raise and lower the end of the reel, as may be required.
To the middle part of the cutter-bar 13 is pivoted the forward end of a lever, 14, which passes through the platform-frame F, between the upper and lower parts of the endless apron f, and is pivoted to the rear bar of the said platform-frame, or to supports attached to the said frame.

To the rear end of thelever 14 is pivoted the inner end of the connecting-rod 15, the outer end of which is pivoted to the crank-pin of a crank-wheel,16, attached to the rear end of the jointed shaft S, and which is made heavy to serve also as a fly-wheel to give momentum and steadiness of motion to the cutter-bar 13. The rear end of the lever 11 works in a groove in the concaved side of a bar, 17, which is curved upon the are of a circle having its center in the pivoting-point of the said lever 14.
With the rear end of the frame E, or with the curved bar 17 is connected the lower end ofa bar, 18, the upper end of which is pivoted to a lever, 19, placed above the tongue I, and pivoted at its forward end to a standard, 20, attached to the said tongue I. The rear end of the lever 19 extends into such a position that it can be readily reached and operated by the driver to lower the rear end of the frame E, andthus raise the cutter-bar 13 from the ground.
To the rear part of the lever 19 is attached a keeper, 21, to receive the standard 22, attached to the rear part of the tongue I. The lever 19 is also provided with a spring-catch, 23, to engage with the standard 22, and thus hold the said lever 19 securely in any position into which it may be adjusted.
To the lower side of the rear part of the tonguevI is pivoted the double-tree 24, to which the draft is applied.
The reel is driven by an endless chain, 25, which passes around a chain -wheel, 26, attached to the journal of the said reel, over guide-pulley 27, pivoted to the rear end of the reel post or support 8, and around a chainwheel, 28, attached to the axle B at the inner side'of the gear-wheel Q.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a header, the combination, with the platform-frame F and its endless apron f, the elevator-frame z, and its two endless aprons h k, and a driving mechanism,of the bar and arms q 1, the upright rods n 0, the sliding frame 8 o w, carrying the horizontal rods pm, the stationary frame t, and the adjusting-rope y, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the cut grain can be dropped to the ground in gavels, as set forth.
2. In a header, the combination, with the rollers 61 e of the endless aprons fit, and the axle B and drive-wheels A, of the gear-wheels a b c, thejointed shaft S, and the gear-wheels Q R, substantially as herein shown and described.
