Application Ilult1 12, 1946, Serial No. 683,007
Claims. l
My invention relates to bench cushions and more specically to a novel structure for facilitating the attachment ci the backrest member to the vertically-disposed backrest of a bench or the like.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a structure which is inexpensive to manufacture, which can be easily inserted and removed from the backrest of a bench or the like, and which is strong and durable.
The above and still further objects of my invention will become apparent from the following detailed specification, appended claims and attached drawings.
Referring to the drawings wherein like characters refer to like parts throughout the several views:
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view showing my novel structure mounted on a bench or the like;
Fig. 2 is a rear perspective View of the parts shown in Fig. 1, some parts being broken away;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the frame and hook.
Referring with greater particularity to the drawings, the numeral I indicates a seat cushion adapted to be seated upon the normally-horizontally disposed bench seat 2. The numeral 3 indicates a backrest cushion which is secured to sea-t cushion I by means of straps or the like ll.
Straps 4 may be made of any suitable material, such as canvas, leather, or the like, and may be secured to cushions I and 3 in any desired manner, but preferably are secured thereto in the manner illustrated in my co-pending application, Serial Number 665,551, iiled April 27, 1946, and entitled Stadium seat. Cushions I and 3 may be of any desired shape, but, preferably and as shown, are generally rectangular inform.
Secured to the rear side 5 of cushion 3 is a rectangular pocket 6 which is open preferably throughout its length at its bottom edge, as indicated by the numeral I. The upper edge of pocket 6 is substantially in alignment with the upper edge 8 of cushion 3 and is provided intermediate its ends, along its upper edge, with an opening 9.
A rectangular elongated frame member I 0, preferably and as shown being constructed of wire or the like, is provided along its upper edge II with an integrally-formed hook, identified in its entirety by the numeral I2, and comprising spaced upright portions I3, rearwardlyextending members I4, and downwardly-extending members I5, which are connected by a crossbar I6.
As shown, the frame member l0, together with its integrally-formed hook I2 are adapted to be inserted into the pocket 6 through the open bottom 1 thereof in the manner indicated particularly in Figs. 2 and 3. As there shown, hook member II extends upwardly through the opening 9 and may readily be hooked onto the vertically-extending back portion of the bleacher or the like, indicated by the numeral Il,
My invention has been thoroughly tried and found completely satisfactory for the purpose intended.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a cushion, a pocket in the backside of said cushion, a centrally-located opening in the upper edge of said pocket, an elongated frame in said pocket, a centrally-located downwardly-opening hook secured to said frame and projecting through the opening in said pocket whereby to engage and secure the cushion to the upper edge of a backrest.
2. The structure deiined in claim 1 in which the bottom edge of said pocket is open throughout its length to facilitate insertion therein of the frame and hook.
3. The structure defined in claim 1 in which said frame and hook are integrally formed from a single piece of wire.
4. In a device of the class described, connected seat and back cushions, an envelope-like pocket in said back cushion, the upper edge of said pocket terminating substantially at the top of said cushion and being provided with a central opening, a horizontally-disposed elongated frame member in said pocket, an upwardly and backwardly-extended downwardly-opening hook secured to the intermediate portion of said frame member and projecting through the central opening in said pocket.
5. I'he structure dened in claim 4 in which the bottom edge of said pocket is provided with an opening to permit insertion therein of said frame and hook.
LEONARD J. THOMPSON.
