ROLLER-MILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,284, dated September 20, 1881. Application filed March 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. WILLFORD, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Mills for the repeated grinding or gradual reduction of cereals to produce flour, and at the same time making the necessary separations following the different grindings; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved machine. Fig. 2 isa plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line as w' of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is avertical section on the line y y of Fig. 2.
The object of my invention is to produce flour from cereals with economy and rapidity; and my invention relates to a machine for the gradual reduction of the wheat or middlings to flour, and making separations following the several reductions.
My invention consists in the details of construction of certain parts of the machine, as hereinafter more specifically described and claimed.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, Z is a frame cast from metal, if desired, supporting a central feedhopper, A, provided with an adjustable valve, B, and a feed-roller, O.
Beneath the hopper A, within a hopper-casing, are the crushing or grinding rolls d 01, one of which has stationary bearings, and the other, d, has its bearings in the ends of the bell-crank levers a a, which are pivoted on studs b, made adjustable by means of set-screws b. This adjustability of the pivotal studs 12 is secured by providing an elongated bearing therefor having the longest diameter in a vertical line, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The pivotal stud b, therefore, has bearings upon setscrew b, and is raised or lowered thereby on the end of a shaft, 6, which passes across the frame and has hearings in it. This construction and arrangement, whereby the adjustability of roll d of each of the pairs d d is secured, enables me to adjust each succeed- D is arranged to slide in the usual way. For
this purpose the lever D is provided with a setscrew or equivalent device, whereby it may be held against the segmental rack in any portion of its throw.
Between the movable hearings in the ends of the levers and bolsters E, cast on the frame, are heavy coiled springs F, which force roller d against roller 01, thereby producing the grind ing tension. The movable wedges ff, located between the ends of levers a and cams e, are made adjustable by means of set-screws f f for the purpose of correcting any mechanical variance of levers a a, and thereby permitting a perfect adjustment of the movable roll in relation to the stationary roll. Gearing 2 on shaft 4, through gear 3, turns roller d, which, by means of cogs at its opposite end, turns roller d and draws the grain or middlings between the pair of rollers d d.
Beneath the rollers above described is a swing-shoe, G, supported by links 9 g, pivoted to the frame at g g, and to which is imparted a reciprocating motion by means of a pitman, h, actuated by an eccentric, h, on a vertical shaft, H, provided with adrivingpulley, as shown. The interior of the shoe G, near its upper edge, is provided with a chute-board, i, beneath which is a screen or bolt, 7:, and again a chute-board, is, beneath the said screen, and carrying at its end a 'conveyer or trough, Z, to carry the finest particles outside the shoe. The bottom of shoe pitches toward the center and conveys all the coarser particles into a hoppercase, wherein are revolving a pair of rolls, n a, mounted and operated precisely as rolls d d are. Beneath rollers n n is a shoe, G, constructed and operated in the same manner as shoe G, and separating the finer particles and carrying them off after-the grinding by rollers n n. The material to be further ground, passing from shoe G, enters the hopper case H, and passing through rollers O O is again reduced and bolted in a shoe, G. From the commencement of the grinding each succeeding pair of rollers is adjusted nearer to each other, and thereby a gradual reduction of the cereal is effected. Following each pair of rollers is a screen or bolt separating the finer from the coarser particles, and delivering to the succeeding pair of rollers only such portions as it is desirable to again reduce.
In reducing wheat, I use fluted or corrugated rolls, and aim to make as many middlings (so called) as possible capable of purification. The flour made at these difl'erent reductions is separated from the middlings and dressed on an ordinary bolting-reel.
In reducing middlin gs (so called) I use smooth rolls, gradually reducing and separatin g, as before, until the flour made is separated from the larger offal, and then sent to an ordinary or centrifugal bolting-reel for the final dressing at the will of the operator.
Having thus described my invention, what T claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The bell-crank levers a at, having the adjustable pivotal points I), springs F, rods provided with cams e e, and levers D, in combination with the roller d, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The wedgesff, provided with the adjusting set-screws ff, in combination with the levers a 0., having the adjustable pivotal points I), and the cams e e, substantially as and for the purpose described.
