(No Model.)
SPIKE.
No. 247,194. Patented Sept. 20,1881.

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicEO JOHN HORROCKS, OF FISHKILL LANDING, NEW YORK.
SPIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,194., dated September 20, 1881,
l Application filed April 28, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HORROCKS, ot the village ot' Fishkill Landing, in the county of for as the head of the spike sets on the flange or foot ofthe rail itis plain that the only resistance to the movement of the rail vertically is the force necessary to lift the spike up vertically; second, hecause, when loosened, itoii'ers too little resistance to the movement of the rail laterally, and without a great deal of expense and attention becomes unsafe.
The object of my invention is to provide a spike which will offer more resistance, both laterally and vertically, to the movement of the rail, and which also can he readily removed when necessary.
The invention consists of a spike furnished with an ear, said ear having a hole adapted to receive another spike.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of referenceindicate like parts, Figure l is a view of my spike in its position against the rail. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the ear and ofthe spikes.
The'spike A has a nose or projection of the head, which sets on the foot or ange of the rail. On the side of the head ot' said spike there is an ear, 1t, which is forged in the same piece with the spike and extends two inches, more or less. Said ear R has a hole adapted to receive another spike or screw, S.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the spike A is driven in the nose sets on the foot ofthe rail. and the ear R rests lat on the sleeper; then the spike S is driven in through the hole T in the ear R; and it will be seen that the vertical movement of the rail against the nose of the spike A acts tangentially on the ear It, and consequently against thestrength of the two spikes.
What I claim is- The spike A,having anv elongated perforated head or ear, jointly with the screw or nail S, substantially as described.
JOHN HORROCKS.
