4 Claims.
This invention relates to valve clearance gauges and is particularly adapted to be used in connection with Ford V-8 motors.
The primary object of the invention is to determine the length of valve lifters to be used after the valves have been reconditioned. Heretofore the valves were inserted in their position and thickness gauges were used between the lifters and the valve stems. This required the trying of a number of lifters which consumed time selected from the supply box and inserted within its guide, completing the operation.
These and other incidental objects will be apparent in the drawings, specification and claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of a Ford motor block, illustrating the valve assembly.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view similar to Figure 1 with the exception that the valve assembly is removed and my new and improved clearance gauge is shown in place for determining the length of the valve lifter to be used.

I will now describe the construction of my new and improved valve clearance gauge. gauge consists of a hollow body portion I 5 having a hollow stem l6. Slidably mounted within the stem I6 is a rod I! which passes through the hearing H3 at its upper end and has an enlarged collar 19 at its lower end. The purpose of the collar I9 is to provide a shoulder 20 upon which the spring 2i rests at its lower end, having its upper end contacting the shoulder 22.
The shoulder 23 of the collar I9 rests upon an adjusting sleeve 24 and is maintained thereagainst by the spring 2|. An adjusting screw 25 is threaded within the end 26 of the shaft I 7 and by the locking nut 27, to adapt the guage to A standard gauge 28 is down upon the seat 32 and causing the indicator hand I do not wish to be limited to the exact mechanical structure, as I have illustrated, as other mechanical equivalents may be substituted still coming within the scope of my claims.
What I claim as new is:
l. A gauge for indicating the length of a valve lifter to be used to gauge a valve for an engine, comprising a hollow body having upper and lower ends, a stemzmovabie in the lower end of the hollow body and protruding therefrom to cooperate with the lifting cam of the valve assembly, an indicator mounted in the hollow body and car ried by and movable with the stem, said hollowbody having a valve seat at its upper end to receive the Valve being gauged, said indicator having an actuating member beneath said valve seat, said valve when in said seat in the hollow body engaging and operating the actuating member to indicate the length of the valve lifter to be used with=that1 valvewhen in position in'the engine.

3. A construction as defined in claim 1, wherein the upperendof the hollowbody is formed with an adiustable extension formed at the upper end withra seat for the valve being gauged.
4. A valve clearance gauge comprising a hollow tubular body, provided with a hollow extension stem extending from the said body a bevelled surface between the hollow body and hollow extension to fit in the valve seat of the motor, a movable plunger mounted within the stem and extending slightly beyond the stem, a clearance indicator gauge having a gauge plunger and mounted to the upper end of the stem and within the hollow body above the bevelled surface, a valve seat formed in the upper part of the body for receiving a valve, the stem of which rests upon the gauge-plunger, the gauge reading indicating the length of valve lifter required when the valve is forced down on the valve seat of the body.
