2 Claims.
My invention relates to a device for charging vor loading a revolver or the like.
lwill be apparent during the course of the following description.

Figure 1 is a central vertical section through the revolver loader embodying my invention parts in elevation, and showing the same associated with the cylinder of a revolver,

In the drawings, where for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral I0 designates a cartridge magazine or container, which is rectangular in transverse cross Sectio open at its lower end, and which has a preferably semi-cylindrical upper closed end Il. The magazine I0 is elonhas vertical sides I2 and I3, and generally vertical slightly forwardly inclined front and rear sides I4 and I5. The rear side I5 increases in thickness toward its upper end. The front and rear sides I4 and I5 have upper circular alined openings I6 and I1, for purposes to be described. The side I3 has a center ygenerally vertical longitudinal guide slot I8, lparallel to the inner guide surfaces of the front vadapted for covering the lower open and rear sides I4 and I5. The upper end of this slot I8 terminates adjacent to the lower edges of the alined openings I6 and I1, and the slot extends to the lower end of the side I3, and is open at that end. Arranged diametrically of the circular opening I1, and suitably rigidly 'secured in the sides I2 and I3, nearthe upper ends of the same, is a horizontal plunger stop pin I9. The rear side I5 of the magazine I0 carries rearwardly extending hinge knuckles 2li, which are adjacent to the lower end of the magazine. The forward side I4 carries a forwardly eX- tending U-shaped latch holder or loop 2 I, also adjacent to the lower end of the magazine I0. rIlhe bottom edge of the forward side I4 has a rectangular recess 22, which is adjacent to the latch holder 2I.
Arranged for reciprocation within the alined openings IB and I1, and normally supported within the opening I1 and extending horizontally rearwardly of the magazine I0, is a cylindrical tubular charger or loading plunger 23. This plunger 23 is open at both ends, and has parallel diametrically arranged longitudinal slots 24, ex-
tending for substantially the full length of the plunger, butterminating short ofthe ends of the same. The slots 24 receive the plunger slot pin, and this pin limits the inward and outward movement or reciprocation of the plunger 23. The plunger 23 carries a transverse spring keeper pin 25, near its outer or rear end, and this pin is rigidly secured within openings formed in the plunger. Arranged within the plunger 23, and having its opposite ends in engagement against the pins I9 and 25, is a suitable coil compression plunger spring 26, for maintaining the plunger 23 in its normal rearwardly extended position.
Arranged beneath the magazine I0, and end of the same, is a magazine cover and main spring housing 21. This cover 21 is rectangular in horizontal cross section, open at its top side, and has a flat rectangular' bottom 28. Rigidly secured to the rear of the cover 21, near the upper end of the same, and extending rearwardly of and above the cover, and between the hinge knuckles 20, is a cover hinge knuckle 29, which receives a hinge pin 30, also received by the knuckles 20. One side 3l of the cover 21 has a short vgenerally vertical guide slot 32, which terminates slightly below the open top side of the cover, and leads into a short lateral upwardly inclined locking slot 33. The slot 32 registers with and forms a part of the slot 3 I8, when the magazine cover 21 is closed, see Fig. 1.
Rigidly secured to the forward end of the cover 21, near the bottom of the cover, are forwardly extending knuckles 34 which receive a pivot pin 35. Pivotally mounted upon the pivot pin 35, and arranged between the knuckles $4, is a vertical latch 35. The latch extends upwardly beyond the knuckles 34 and has a latch head 31,3havinga2latch recess', Within which the latch holder or loop 2| engages, to 'fasten the magazine cover 21 in the closed latched position. The latch 36 has a lower depending portion 39, having a stop lug 4B for engaging against the cover 21, to limit the vertical swinging movement of the latch when the cover im is opened as in Figure 5 of the drawings. A suitable light coil compression latch spring 4I is arranged in a recess 42, formed in the forward end of the cover 21, and this spring maintains rthe .latch .3.6 in :the locked or latched position, .shown in Figure 1. `A .recess .43 .is provided in the lforward end v,of lthe .cover 42.1, near the `open top side .of the cover, ,and .this recess registers .with and Aforms a part .of the recess 22, when the magazine Acover '21 is closed. 'The recesses f2.2 and ,.143 provide the necessary clearance `for swinging the latch C36 'inwardly, to unlatch .and openthe magazine cover.,21.
Arranged within `the magazine cover 2'1, and Aalsowithin-the magazine I n, when the rcover is in the closed position, see Figure 1, 'is a main or follower plate vspring 44, which Vis a compres Asion spring, -having elongated 'generally oval- 'shaped coils. When the -cover V2'! is closed, one end of this spring 44 engages against the `ilat tbottom 28 yof the cover, and the opposite upper end coil of the spring engages against 'the flower flat surface ofthe Ifollower platee-and is secured thereto lby-a depending lug l45, carried by 'a 'hori- .zontal transversely circularly curved follower :plate '46. The follower plate 46 is adapted `for :supporting :suitable cartridges or bullets 4H and .lhas .a centrally :located depending ,lug .for vb'oss A8 having 1a transverse extension or lpin '49, :for engaging and sliding within the :slots i8, and ;f3,3. The operation of the device `is :as follows:
The button or yknob 50 is pushed downwardly, moving lthe pin 49 `downwardly in the slot t8, and into the slot d2. The device is then inverted, -as :show-n in .Figure 5, .and 4the cover 21 4is unmatched, and swung into .the opened position, with the :ima-in spring, follower plate, and associated Velen ments. A suitable number Yof proper size cartridges .4:1 .are `next dropped into the Amagazine Where `they become arranged horizontally, one
.above the other.
When the magazine Ill is iilled with cartridges, 'the Cover 2.1 `is swung to the closed position yand is automatically latched closed. The pin 49 is disengaged from within the inclined locking slot 33, and again moved into the slots 32 and I8. The main spring 44 now forces the follower plate 45 upwardly against the lowermost cartridge in the magazine, as viewed in Figure 1. The forward and rear ends of the cartridges 41 are guided upwardly in the magazine I0 by the inner surfaces of the sides I4 and I5.
The `uppermost cartridge in the .magazine en- `.gages the semi-"cylindrical'end ltlfandds held in position by the follower plate, and by the other `cartridges below it. The device is now again in the..uD1ight position, and is ready for use in loading a revolver, or the like.
When it is desired to inject a cartridge into the revolver cylinder 5I, or the like, the plunger '-23 is pushed'inwardly against the force of the spring `26, by the thumb of the user. This plunger forces the uppermost cartridge 41 through the circular discharge opening -I6,.and .out `of `:the magazine T0. Thap'lunger ,wiillreturn .to rthe. normal position, when released, and .the .follower `plate and main `spring 44 move the .next .cartridge upwardly into position 'for Lbeng ejected Afrom the magazine bythe ,plunger 23. The loadying process can continue until the magazine 'is empty.

Having thus described my invention, what I aclaimiis:
1.
