A further object of this invention is to provide a method for making preformed packing suitable for use in glands or stufiing tubes of any nature.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, claimed and illustrated in the drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the preformed packing making machine of this nature.
Fig. 2 is a sectional fragmentary View on line 22 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 6 is a perspective sectional view of the packing made according to the method of this invention.
There is shown at ii! the packing making machine of this invention which includes a table ll supported on legs I2 having foot plates 13. The side legs l2 are connected by braces It which in turn support a cross brace l5. Mounted on the table I l is apair of vertical beams it which in turn rigidly support a bridge plate ll. Adjustably and fixedly secured to this bridge plate it by means of a threaded end [8 is a mandrel 28, the mandrel extending vertically downward and being adjusted in position to terminate just above the surface of the table II over a suitable opening 2! in the table II. Supported on the table It is a plate 22 having a gateway 23 therein, wherein is slidably Patent N03:

being provided with nuts 36 for adjustably limiting their upward movement. Pistons 37 secured at the upper ends of rods 35 on top of coil springs 38 within spring tubes 49 serve to keep the rods 35 at the top limit of their movement permitted by the adjusting nuts 36 beneath the bridge plate H. The lower ends of rods 35 extend through suitable openings in the plate 22 and table I l and end in inturned fingers 4| extending into a triangular lever 42 whose apex 43 is pivotally secured to a foot lever 44 having a pivotal connection 45 on the cross brace lb. The other end of lever 44 is provided with a foot pedal 66. Obviously this machine can be modified to be power operated instead of pedal operated.
In operation the springs 38 normally hold the plunger 32 at the upper limit of its movement. When in this position, packing material is manually wound about that portion 20 of the mandrel 20 which is visible between the top of cylinder 30 and the bottom of plunger 32. In one form of packing made by this machine a strip of packing of card consistency is first Wound about the mandrel portion 20 and then foot pedal 46 is depressed, causing plunger 32 to force this first portion of packing 50 into the annular space between the bottom of the mandrel 20 and the inside of cylinder 30 on top of gate 24. The pedal 46 is released, permitting the plunger 32 to be raised by the springs 38 to its original position. A packing 5! of softer consistency is then wound about the mandrel portion 20' and then compressed against the first portion only within cylinder 30. A third portion of packing material 52 of a consistency similar to the first portion is then placed on the mandrel portion 20' and compressed against the previously compressed portions of packing. The packing 3| is thus completed and then the handle 21 is grasped to cause the lever 25 to open the gate 24 whereupon the pedal 46 is depressed again, causing the completed packing 3| to be discharged through the table opening 2|, whereupon the machine is empty, ready for a new preformed packing to be made thereon. As will be apparent, the mandrel 20, the cylinder 30 and the plunger 32 are easily removable and replaceable and may be replaced by similar articles of somewhat diiferent size, thus making it possible to make packing of various sizes on the same machine by merely substituting an appropriately sized mandrel, plunger and packing.
Other modifications and changes in the num ber and arrangement of the parts may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the nature of this invention, within the scope of what is hereinafter claimed.
The invention herein described and claimed may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor,
What is claimed is:
