WOOD- BORING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent, No. 246,840, dated September 6, 1881,
Application filed June 13, 1881. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MASON TRACK- WELL, of Skookumchuck, in the county of Lewis, \Vashington Territory, have invented certain useful Improvements in Boring-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an apparatus which is more particularly intended for boring in the trunks of trees, either while standing or when fallen, but is applicable to various kinds of wood-boring.
The invention consi ts in a novel construction and combination, with an auger-stock and its carry ing-l'rame, of a frame and devices connected therewith for holding the anger in place while at work, as hereinafter particularly de scribed.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of an apparatus embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken in the line no 00 of Fig. 1. 7
Similar letters of reference indicnte corresponding parts.
A represents a forked bar, having the lower ends of the two branches sharp-pointed and their upper ends joined to form a head,'a, to which is attached a cross-bar, B. The two branches are provided with ribs or guideways D for engagement with the carrying-frame O of an auger-stock operated bymeans of cranks e and bevel-gearing f. This frame and the guideways are similar to those heretofore in common use for boring and mortising purposes. In such cases the guideways are provided with feet, which rest upon the work.
In my invention I attach the guideways to the forked bar A and dispense with the feet.
G represents a rod, having its lower end pointed and provided with a cant-hook, g. The upper end of the rod is connected, by a sleeve, H, and set-screw J, with the lower end of a forked bar, K, the upper ends of which are provided with eyes I, and springinto plate on pivots i at the ends of the cross-burl I In using this invention the points of the forks A are driven into the wood by a blow on the head a with a mallet, and the apparatus is held steadily in place by means of the hook g, or the point at the lower end of the rod G, which 10d may be adjusted to any desired angle by means of the sleeve ll and set-screw J. The boring is then proceeded with in the usual manner. \Vhen the anger is to be raised the vertical bevel-wheel f engages with an adjustable rack-bar, M, which is swung out of the way, as in the ordinary apparatus, while the boring is progressing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a boring-machine, the combination, with the auger-frame (J, the bevel-gear wheelsf, and the swinging rack-bar M, of the forked barA, having its lower ends pointed and its upper endsjoined and formed into a head, and provided with the sides or guide ays D, the crossbar B, the forked bar K, provided with the sleeve H and set-screw J, and the rointed and hooked rod G, substanti \lly as herein shown and described.
JAMES MAS ON TRAUKWELL.
