speed of the mo- A further object of the invention is to vprovide :a governor-controlled shutter for fans which is .simple 'and practical in con-struction, efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to :manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which Ithe same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation yas more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings lforming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view Figure 2 is a side elevational View;
Figure 3 is a top plan View with parts broken aw-ay and shown in section;
Figure 4 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the governor; and
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein, for the purpose `of illustration, I have disclosed .a :preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a fan driven by an electric motor l6 through a shaft 'l which projects rearwardly of the motor. The fan 5 works immediately behind a shutter frame 8 having a plurality of shutters 9 .positioned therein and swingable vertically at their rear edges `on pins I0 carried by the side edges of the frame. The shutters are connected to each other for uniform opening and closing movement by a vertical rod II having right angled portions I2 extending transversely through apertured lbrackets I3 secured to the front outer edges of the shutter.
The pivot pin for one of ythe shutters is xed thereto and is formed at one end with 'a crank I4 outwardly at one side of the frame and to which the front end lof a link I5 is pivotally attac-hed. The rear end of the link is pivoted to one end of a rocker arm IIB by means of yclamps l? and a ball and socket connection I8. The other end of 4the rocker arm is secured to the A'motor S by means of a motor by means of :a clamp'ZIB.
link I9 'attached to the i of itsopposed sides and inwhich ltrunnionsr23 `at diametrica'lly opposite sides of a block 24 are slidably positioned. The trunnions 23 project radially from diametrically opposite sides of a ring 25 which is seated in an annular groove 26 in the periphery of the lblock 26, the block being rotatable relative to the ring and trunnions 23.
The block 24 is slidably and rotatably carried at the rear end of `the motor shaft 'l and secured to the shaft adjacent its inner end is a Icollar 21 connected to the block by resilient governor arms 23 having weights 29 at their central portions. A coil spring 36 surrounds the shaft 'l with one end bearing against ythe block 24 yand its other end bearing against thecoll-ar 2l.
In the operation of the device, the spring 3D normally slides the block 24 outwardly or rearwardly on the shaft 'I to thus rock the arm in a direction to exert a rearward pulling force on the link I5 whereby to rotate the crank I4 and to swing the shutters 9 downwardly into a closed ,position in the frame 8 in front of the fan 5 -as shown by the full lines in Figure 2 of the drawing.
When the fan 5 is rotated by the motor '6 and shaft 1, the governor arms 28 will ride outwardly as shown by the dotted Ilines in Figure 4, whereby to draw the block 2li forwardly which carries With it the rocker arm I6, thus pushing the link I5 forwardly and rotating the crank I4 in la direction to swing the shutters 9 upwardly into the position as shown by the `dotted lines in Figure 2.
rIhe opening and closing movement of the shutter is thus controlled by lthe speed of the motor.
In View of the foregoing description `taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear yunderstanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is :accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully compre hended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. In combination, a fan including a motor invention, what is having a shaft projecting rearwardly therefrom, a shutter pivoted in front of the fan, a governor carried by the shaft, and including a sliding block, a rocker arm pivotally supported at one endto a supporting structure, means connecting the other end of the arm to the shutter for opening and closing the shutter, and means connecting the sliding block to the rocker arm, said means comprising an annular groove in the sliding block, a ring seated in the groove, trunnions projecting radially from the ring, and a polygonal frame carried by the rocker arm and having slots in a pair of its opposed sides receiving the trunnions.
2. In combination, a fan including a motor having a shaft projecting therefrom, a governor on said shaft including a sliding block, a frame at one side of the motor, a crank shaft journaled in said frame to be rocked therein, a shutter on said crank shaft adapted to be opened and closed by rocking of said crank shaft, a rocker arm, means pivotally connecting said arm at one end to the motor, a link connection between the other end of said arm and the crank of the crank shaft, and means operatively connecting the slide block to said arm intermediate the ends of the arm.
3. In combination, a fan including a motor having a shaft projecting therefrom, a governor on said shaft including a sliding block, a frame at one side of the motor, a crank shaft journaled in said rame to be rocked therein, a shutter on said crank shaft adapted to be opened and closed by rocking of said crank shaft, a rocker arm pivotally connected at one end to the motor, means operatively connecting the other end of said arm to the crank of the .crank shaft, and means operatively connecting the slide block to said arm intermediate the ends of said arm, the pivotal connection of the rocker arm to the motor including a link compensating for rocking of said arm.
