.4 Claims. 1 "This invention relates to freight handling and has special reference to .a load transferring device. More particularly the invention relates to a device for loading railroad cars, trucks and the like and for unloading the same.
One important :object of the invention is to provide a load transferrin device having a novel means "for adjustment to height to suit the vehicle into which or from which the load is to be moved.
A second 'important-object-of the invention to .Wifie a device of this description wherein the "making the adjustment and consequently this requires considerable power.
A third important object of the invention is to provide a load transferring device wherein only the usual rail or track and the hoist itself will be required to be raised or lowered.
The fourth important object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind having an extensible arrangement whereby the load may be carried between the top of the box car or truck, this extensible arrangement being suitable means for adjustment at its free end.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts presently to be fully described, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly claimed.

In the embodiment of the invention as herein illustrated there has been show-n a loading platform ill whereon is erected a building structure including an overhead frame provided with longitudinal beams l I and spaced transverse beams 12. Depending from the transverse beams l2 are stirrupsls longitudinally spaced along the beams 12 and carrying at their-"lower ends longitudinal beams l4. Also depending from the longitudinal beamsll are spacedsets "of four guide bars 15, thebeams I4 lying between pairs :of these guide "bars. Extending transversely 0f the structure is a pair of transverse beams Hi. The ends of these beams extend between the guide bars 15 of .the several :pairs at. each'end of the said structure. interposed between the :beams l4 and the ends of the beams 16 are suitable blockings. l?! and it will be obvious that by selecting the proper number and size of these blockings the beams l6 may be held at any desired height within the scope of the structure above the beams 14.
Bolted centrally to the underside of the beams I6 is a rail or track l8 whereon runs a trolley l9 supporting any suitable form of hoist as at 20. It is possible, by adjustment of the blockings H, to position the track or rail l8 to any desired height above the platform Ill and it will be noted that in making this adjustment all that has to be supported for raising or lowering is the pair of beams Hi, the track or rail 18, the trolley l9 and the hoist 20.
The platform Ill may be provided with any desired form of conveyor 2| whereby a load L may be brought into position below the hoist and transferred to the structure above described, this load being arranged for connection to the hoist by suitable means such as the sling S.
Extending outwardly of the above described structure is an extension track or rail 22 which alines with the rail l8. To the outer end of the rail I8 and to the inner end of the rail 22 are secured a pair of angles 23 which can be bolted together as at 24 to hold the rail sections [8 and 22 securely connected. As a means for supporting the outer end or free end of the extension rail 22 there is employed a post comprising a lower tubular section 25 wherein telescopes an upper tubular section 26 provided with vertically spaced holes or openings 21 for the reception of the bolt 28 which rests upon the top of the lower section 25 and thus prevents retraction of the telescopic upper section 26. This upper section carries a shoe 29 wherein fits the lower flange portion of the end of the extension rail 22, slipping of one part on the other being prevented by means of the set screw 30.
Here again it will be noted that in adjusting for height the only parts to be supported will be the relatively light section 22 and upper tubular section 26.
It will be noted that no heavy adjustment frame is required for the rails such as would be the case did such frame have legs resting on the platform l and arranged for vertical lengthening or shortening.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein Without/departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In load transferring apparatus, an overhead frame, hangers depending from said frame, laterally spaced longitudinal beams carried by said hangers, transverse beams spanning the space between said longitudinal beams, a longitudinal rail carried by said transverse beams below the same, and means to eifect desired spacing of the transverse beams above the longitudinal beams.
2. In load transferring apparatus, an overhead frame, hangers depending from said frame, laterally spaced longitudinal beams carried by said hangers, transverse beams spanning the space between said longitudinal beams, a, longitudinal rail carried by said transverse beams below the same, and blocking removably inserted between the longitudinal beams and the ends of the transverse beams.
3. In load transferring apparatus, an overhead frame, hangers depending from said frame, laterally spaced longitudinal beams carried by said tudinal rail carried by said transverse beams below the same, blockings removably inserted between the longitudinal beams and the ends of the transverse beams, and guide bars depending from said overhead frame and guiding the ends of said transverse beams.
