R. c. sALA I 2,467,156
v WATER HEATER Filed Jan. 12, 1945 April 12, 1949.
fawn" I /z Patented Apr. 12, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WATER HEATER Redick C. Sala, Avalon, Pa. Application January 12, 1945, Serial No. 572,576
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in motor driven vehicles, and has for its object to pro-v vide a hot and cold water system for such vehicles.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a motor driven ambulance means for supplying both hot and cold water.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a motor driven vehicle a water system embracing both hot and cold water the hot water being supplied from a tank heated by the exhaust of the vehicle.
With the above and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear I have invented the device shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of a hot water heating plant.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification, and in the several views in the drawings in which i indicates my invention which comprised a hot water heater 2 casted to the exhaust pipe 3 of any motor vehicle or the exhaust pipe of any motor.
The member 2 consists of a casting l in which is tightly fitted preferably a copper water tank 5 having an outlet 6 and inlet 1. The outlet 6 is connected by a tube 8 to a draw spigot 9. I6 is a cold water tank for the system, having a filling spout II. This tank is connected to an intermediate tank l2 by a connecting pipe [3 having a cutoff valve I l. The tank [2 is connected by a pipe [5 to the inlet 1.
In operation the tank 19 is filled with cold water which, when the valve I4 is opened, fills tank I2 the latter tank being connected by the pipe [5 to the inlet 1 of the heating tank 2. When the valve I4 is opened water will flow down to fill both tanks [2 and 2, after which the valve M. is closed and the tank in filled with cold water.
The hot water in tank 2 and steam therein will rise through pipe 15, and preheat the water in 2 tank l2 before it finally runs the heating tank. The tank a blow-oii valve IS.
The tanks I0 and I2 are both provided with water gauges I1 and I8 respectively.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having now described my invention that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
In a water heating system for motor vehicles, an elongated chamber cast integral with the exhaust conduit of an internal combustion engine and disposed externally and longitudinally thereof and provided with an open, externally flanged end, a tank forming a part of a water supply system disposed removably in said chamber and substantially filling the same, said tank having a flanged outer end for engagement with the flange of said chamber, and latch means for detachably connecting said flanges for retaining the tank in an applied position, nested within the chamber.
