This invention relates to a means for printing on photographs, and more particularly for printing titles or dates thereon, indicating the subi ect matter or occasion on which the snap-shot is taken, or the date of the picture, to recall certain events to identify the, particular photographs or pictures in liuestion.

Another object of the invention is to provide a novel means by which photographs horizontally or lengthwise, as Well as vertically or crosswise, may be marked at either end, according to the direction in Which the picture is taken, so that the identifying information may be printed under the picture or photograph to identify the same.

Another object of the invention is to provide a novel means for printing a title or date on the sensitized paper upon which the picture is printed from a iilm, after the nlm has been developed, so as to produce directly on the sensitized paper on which the picture is subsequently printed, the identifying data, title or date or a combination thereof identifying the photograph, the means for printing on the photograph or sensitized paper 0n which the picture is printed from the film, being designed to accommodate various sized flinis, arranged either vertically or horizontally without modification of the holding structure, so that various sized photographs will be accommodated simply by replacing an adjusting or compensating strip or sheet in the holder.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forrning hereof, wherein like numerals refer to lilre parts throughout, and in which:

Figure l is a face view of a holder by which the method of printing on photographs is accomplished, and showing the method employed for printing titles or dates thereon.

Figure 2 is a similar view for printing on a photograph or sensitized sheet on which a picture is to be printed, arranged vertically, instead of horizontally or lengthwise, as shown in Figure l.

Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 3 3 of Figure l, and

Figure e a sectional view taken on the line 4 4- of Figure l.

Referring to the dra-Wings in detail, in which iike reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the means for printing on photographs or snap-shot pictures with ities, dates or other information identifying the photographs, .includes a rectangular opaque sheet iii of compressed paper, iibre board 0r like opaque material, but may be oi plastic, metal or other suitable material which is relatively thin and opaque, and having narrow ends II and I2 and longitudinal sides or edges i3 and I4 constituting the top and bottoni edges thereof, the ends and side edges forming a rectangle. Running longitudinally of the top edge it is a narrow strip or raised marginal portion i5 of similar material forming a shoulder or stop i6 at the inner edge thereof, the strip being even with the edge I3 at its outer edge and in spaced parallel relation thereto at its inner edge, as well as extending to the ends i5 and ii, at the ends thereof. Centrally or the length of the sheet il), the strip I5 may be marked with a center line Il which Will represent the center of the length or width in dimension of the sides of a sensitized sheet upon which a picture is to be printed from a negative nlm and centrally of which along one edge under the picture, photograph or snap-shot, the identifying data indicating a season, occasion or date or any combination `thereof is to be printed.

Along the opposite edge M, a similar strip or marginal raised portion I8, like the strip I5 is provided having an inner edge or stop i9 forming a shoulder the saine as the shoulder or stop I5, due to the fact that the strips i5 and i8 are glued or otherwise fastened to one face of the sheet iii, although it is to be understood that the edges he turned or the shoulders in parallel relation, may be otherwise suitably formed as projections thereon.. Between the strips i5 and I8, at one end, such as the end l i, suitable keepers, clips or fasteners 2Q are anchored to the sheet I0 at the front, to project over the back of the sheet iii in spaced relation thereto but sufficiently close to form a holding and clamping means for adjusting and compensating smaller rectangular sheets or replaceable and removable marginal raised portions 2i and 22 or others, tting exactly between the strips or shoulders I5 and I8 or l5 and it respectively, at the ends of the smaller sheets 2! and 22. The clips 20 may be ordinary fasteners, or otherwise, which are of U--shaped form as clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawings and provided with a burr 23 in one side or leg, in order to anchor or fasten the same to the sheet i@ by clinching the same therethrough opposite an opening in the other leg or side of the clip.

indicated at 2li is adapted to be placed, In order to accommodate the sensitized sheet or printing paper Zi upon which the picture is to be printed from the iilm, lengthwise and in the direction of the width, crosswise or horizontally or vertically, the compensating or adjustment sheets 2i and 22 are made of different sizes. These sheets are inserted beneath the clips 2Q between the edges or shoulders It and I9, the length of the sheets iii and 22 of opaque material being such that they t exactly between the shoulders or stops Iii and I9 formed by the inner edges of the strips or raised marginal portions I5 and I8 so that the outer edges of the strips or raised portions 2l or 22 are exactly in line with the ends I I, while the inner edges 2l thereof forming stops or shoulders parallel to 'the ends Il and I2 and perpendicular to edges I3 and Iii and edges, stops or shoulders I6 and I9 extend over the sheet I0, and strips 2l and 22 being of dierent transverse dimensions or widths, will project over the sheet I@ diierent extents or degrees so that the distances between the inner edges El thereof and the center line II, as well as the center of length of the slot or opening 25, will be narrower or wider to ex- N actly accommodate the standard size sensitive sheet 26 so that its center will exactly' align with the center line ill and the center of length of the slot or opening 25 when placed horizontally or lengthwise as shown in Figure l oi the drawings, or vertically as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. IThus, the different widths of the strips or sheets 2l and 22 will accommodate the same size picture sheet 2t. By varying the sizes or widths of the sheets 2i and 22, the device is made to accommodate different size snap-shots or photographs, that is the negative films and sensitized paper printing sheets 2S to be used in printing the titles thereon and on which the pictures are to be printed from the nlm, as well as the printed matter constituting titles or other identifying data in reference to the picture, such as the particular occasion or date thereof, or any combination of such data. For this purpose, the sensitized paper sheet of the same size as the film, as '1 indicated at 26, is placed so that its two corner edges or sides are against the shoulder i9 and the edge or shoulder 2l of the strip 2l, when the picture is arranged lengthwise or horizontally and. is so taken on the hlm by means of the camera. With the sheet 2l in position with its ends abutting the shoulders or edges IE and iS, the sheet will be exactly centered with respect to the center line lll and the opening or slot 25, so that the latter will be located below the picture appearing on the sheet 26 when printed and naturally, of the same location as the picture on the film.

In order to produce or print a title on the picture sheet, which will be subsequently the photograph or snap-shot, a iilm sheet or strip 23 is employed bearing thereon in parallel rows, any number of suitable identifying data or information as indicated at 2S', and appearing as transparencies. While the data may be of any suitable character, it identifies different information which identifies the particular picture to be printed on the sheet 25 of sensitized or chemically treated paper and may have reference to various events, without or in combination with the dates thereof, and shown placed in position between the sheet Il! and the strip I 8 at a guideway or slot 3@ formed therein, where the strip I is left loose or unsecured to the sheet l@ for a length equal to the Width of the strip or sheet 28, Thus,

a slot or guideway is provided for the lm sheet or strip its to exactly accommodate the width thereof and to permit it to be slid into position so that any one of the titles may be centrally positioned beneath the slot or opening 25 and represented in the drawings in a reverse position with the identifying information Summer 1945. The nlm strip it is placed between the back face of the sheet I@ and the front face of sensitized iace of the chemically treated paper sheet 26 on which the picture is to be printed, so that the remaining portion of the picture sheet of sensitized paper t is protected by the sheet I!) from exposure to light, so that by exposing the po-rtion or the sensitized paper 2G through the slot 25 and lm strip 2d of opaque form, except the transparent characters 29, the subject mattei' appearing thereon, such as stated, will be exposed through the transparent data to the sensitized sheet, to print or produce thereon, the title or other identifying information, including the event which will thereby be printed on the sensitized face of the sheet 26. In Figure l., the printing of such data to identify the picture, will be beneath the picture lengthwise thereof, that is in. the direction of its long dimension. However, by substituting a slightly wider shes' for 'the sheet 2l of the same opaque material as the sheet I9, beneath, the clips 2li as shown in ure 2 of the drawings, the sensitized sheet 26 of same size as that employed in Figure of tl e drawings will be exactly accommodated between the inner edge 2l of the sheet 2i and the edge i9 at one corner, to centrally position the sheet with the long dimension vertically instead oi lengthwise horizontally, with the center or gauge line l'l extending centrally and vertically oi the sheet andthe slot or opening 25 also centrally beneath the picture to be printed on the sheet and below the same at its narrow bottom edge. By exposure, and later development oi the sheet from the film, the title or identifying information will appear directly beneath the picture and centrally of the width of the photographic sheet. By varying the sizes of the sheets 2i and 22, which in Figures l and 2 of the drawings are shown to accom,- modate a sise lZG hln or picture horizontally and vertically respectively, various size pliotographs and iilrns may be accommodated by the device, simply by replacing the sheets in lieu of the sheets ill and Z2, which varies the distance between the inner edges thereof and the cent-er line or gauge il as well as the center of length of the slot or opening so as to always have the sensitized sheet centrally arranged with respect to said gauge line and slot when placed lengthwise horizontally or vertically, according to the position of the picture thereon,

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, arrangement and com! "nation of part-s may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim is:

l. A device for printing on sensitized sheets, consisting of an opaque sheet with a central longitudinal slot, a first stop on one edge of said sheet, a center line on said stop, a second stop on the opposite edge of said sheet and parallel to the rst stop, a longitudinal slit centrally positione'd in said second stop to serve as a guide for an opaque strip, and a compensating sheet 5 of predetermined size removably disposed between said stops to position a sensitized sheet so that its center is exactly aligned with the center line on said rst stop.

2. The combination of claim 1, wherein said stops extend the length of said opaque sheet and abut and guide the movement of said compensating sheet.

3. The combination of claim 2, wherein said compensating sheet is removably held in xed position on said opaque sheet by means of clips.

4. The combination of claim 1, wherein said longitudinal slit on said stop and said longitudinal slot on said opaque sheet are axially aligned for movement of an opaque strip through said slit 15 and over said slot.
