ATTDRNEYE Patented Mar. 29, 1949 s PATENT OFFIJCE THERMOSTATIC SWITCH Albert R. Sivley, Gadsden, Ala., assignor of onehalf to Charles R. D. Burns, Gadsden, Ala.
Application November 8, 1946, Serial No. 708,546
1 Claim. 1
My present invention relates to an improved heat control unit of the thermostatic type particularly adaptable for use in connection with heat therapy equipment although the unit may well be employed in any apparatus or appliance requiring positive and eflicient heat control mechanism.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode I have thus far devised but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may bemade in the exemplified structure within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the thermostatic unit of my invention. I
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view thereof taken at line 22 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken at line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like characters indicate. like parts I have illustrated the unit of my invention as mounted on a wall 2. The unit is spaced from the wall as by washers 3 and the base board 4 is secured to the wall at one end by the bolt 5 having an eye 6.
An insulation strip 1 is provided on the base board 4 and the bolt 8 secures this strip and the base together and provides a connection for wire I held thereon by nuts 12. A contact arm I4 is secured to the bolt 8 thus being in electrical connection with the wire I0.
Insulation layers It and I! on the strip 1 are grooved to receive and retain therebetween the bent portion of a horseshoe magnet l8, and the spacer and the various insulation layers are secured by the bolt 22 connected with the wire 24 and secured by nuts 26.
A contact arm 28 is also secured on the bolt 22 and this arm is formed with a connector 30 engageable with the contact arm 14 to close or open the circuit through the wires l0 and 24, to such equipment as may be connected in the electrical circuit.
A bolt 32 secured by nut 34 secures the other end of the base board and the insulation media and the magnet in position, and to the wall 2,
is attached to the arm 38 and the pin 44 is designed to be moved by the expansion or contraction of the thermostat into or out of contact with the arm H to open or close the circuit.
A link 46 is formed at the free end of the arm 38 and the spring 48 forms a tension means for the end of the arm which may be adjusted to maximum or minimum heat position by rotation of the adjustment bolt 58 through the hand knob 52.
The movement 61 the pin 44 on the thermostat will be limited by the setting of the control to effect the closing and opening of the circuit within the bounds set by the adjustment of the knob, and as th heat of the utilized appliance or apparatus reaches a maximum heat the unit will expand responsive to the heat and separate the arms thus opening the circuit and disconnecting the appliance. Conversely of course. the control may be used to close the circuit when the degree of heat reaches a predetermined minimum.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A heat control unit adapted to be electrically connected in a circuit and comprising horizontally disposed contact arms in the circuit, a horizontally disposed horseshoe magnet having its ends about the contact point of the arms, a horizontally disposed pivoted arm on the unit below and in alinement with said arms, a fluid expansible thermostat on the arm, a vertically disposed pin on the thermostat engaging one connector arm under expansion of the thermostat to separate the arms, a vertically disposed link on the free to limit the movement of the arm.
