This invention relates lto an improvement automatic pistols.
The main object of this invention is to provide a modification for an automatic pistol in which the muzzle blast and recoil is substantially reduced, the reduction in the standard Colt of the type illustrated being in the nature of thirty per cent.
Another object of this invention is to provide a structure of the type in question in which the slide is so modified that it does not return with the violence to be found in conventional struc tures, this modification acting directly on the recoil for retarding the action of same.
A further object of this invention is to provide an extension adapted to be fixed to an automatic pistol and to form a permanent part thereof, the extension including a part of a standard slide, a part of the barrel bushing, and an addition to the plug.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a plug structure capable of housing the extremity of the conventional recoil spring, and having an extended portion for the reception of an interchangeable weight whereby the stability of the Weapon is materially increased.
Other objects comprehend a structure whereby the effective recoil is reduced to prevent the linching on the part of the person utilizing the weapon, the sight base is increased to decrease the amount of error in aiming and the recoil is modified to eliminate the twist and to provide a straight back thrust.
Other features and objects of this invention will more clearly hereinafter appear with reference to the claims and drawings forming a part of this specification, and wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the invention,

Figure 5 is a section on line 5--5 of Figure 2.
The present structure is designed specifically for the purpose of modifying that type of gun known as the Colt automatic pistol, the illustration in the accompanying drawings 'being of the Colt government model caliber .45 automatic pistol which is in general use in the Army and Navy of the United States Government. It is to be understood of course that while the illustration is directed to the Colt automatic pistol of the .45 caliber, other calibers of the same make and also other designs of automatic pistols may be modified in accordance with this invention.
These automatic pistols include a hand grip A, a slide B, a receiver C, a trigger D, and a hammer E. The barrel of the pistol is shown at G with the extension for the barrel indicated by lreference character G'. This barrel extension is in the form of a bushing which ts the end of the barrel G as shown at g and therefore extends beyond the slide extension connection M with the slide and tends to furnish aibrace between the main slide B and its extension F. In the present type of pistol it will be noted that the slide or sleeve B completely surrounds the barrel and as is well known in the art the barrel is locked to this sleeve at the time of firing. The sleeve G is provided with a thickened portion as at t" which is iixed to the end of the barrel G and snugly engages the associated parts. The end of the sleeve G' is flanged at g and thus provides a suitable means for defining the relative association of the parts and particularly functions as a stop by abutting against the end of the sleeve extension F.
The conventional plug is eliminated and in lieu thereof the plug H-J is provided. This plug less a matter of choice.
H-J is formed by a crimping operation at j to provide the inner spring casing J, while the eX- tended portion of the plug H provides a chamber in which a suitable weight may be located in accordance with the requirements of the person using the weapon. In the present disclosure such weights have been indicated at X in dotted lines and their structure and arrangement is more or It will of course be appreciated that the weights should be such as to be capable of insertion within the plug and the length of the weight should be extended so that ythere will be no longitudinal movement of the weight during the firing of the pistol. The outer end of the plug H--J is reduced as at h thereby forming a shoulder which abuts against and is associated with the flange g of the sleeve G.
From the foregoing description it will be obvious to one skilled in the art that the necessary parts have been provided for extending the automatic type pistol and these parts can readily be utilized by eliminating from the conventional structure its sleeve and plug. In lieu of the old sleeve and plug new modified sleeves and plugs are provided and are associated with a slide extension. The slide extension is welded to the end of the original slide of the conventional structure and the sleeve and plug are so constructed and arranged as to 3 be conveniently associated therewith. It is to be understood that the slide extension will be welded or otherwise formed as an integral part in extension of the original slide structure. By these slight and inexpensive changes a structure has been provided in which the sights are further spaced apart which inherently decreases the `amount of error in aiming and thus increases the accuracynin the use of thepistol. Also the eiective recoil is'greatly v"reduced J`which prevents the subconscious flinching on the part of the person using the pistol. This subconscious flinching ofttimes spoiling accuracy of aim. V In addition the actual recoil is substantia-liyred'ed*to a straight back thrust, the normal-tendencypf the recoil to twist to one side being`materially modied.
What I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. 2. In an automatic pistol having a slide, barrel, and plug, a slide extension for permanent attachment to the end of said slide, a sleeve in said slide forming an extension of said barrel and a plug, said plug being formed with a spring chamber and a weight chamber and said weight chamber being adapted to receive variable weight elements.
3. The substance of claim 2 characterized in that-the'va'riable weights-.foretheiiplug are interchaiffgeabley,
