Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. j
IRA GLYNN AND M. BOROWSKY, OF PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 24,625, dated July 5, 1859.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that we, IRA GLYNN and MIKEL BoRowsKY, of Placerville, in the county of Eldorado, in the State of California., have invented a new and useful hiachine for Cutting Off the Points of Cues for Billiard Saloons; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact de scription thereof, reference being had to accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists of a bed piece A withl lever, B, attached to the end of bed piece, A, by a carriage jointl with a bolt as shown by model. The lever, B, has a jag cut on the side to receive the reversed l\ knife or cutter, E, which is made of steel fastened with two screws to the lever, B. The lever is attached to bed piece, A, so that the cutter E will pass the frontin the mode of shears as shown by the model and drawings. The bed, A, has on the back side a notch cut in its half the thickness to attach two spring jaws marked, C, (l, for holding the cuev steady when cutting it off. The machine is attached to a block marked D, of sufficient size to hold it steady for use. This block has a groove out lengthwise for the cue to rest in as shown by the model.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to de scribe its construction and operation.
We construct our machine of suflicient size for convenience. The model is considered to be of full size. The bed piece, A, is made of brass or any other metal, eight and one half inches long, by two inches wide in the center, one inch wide at each end and one half inch thick. The lever is made of the same metal, fourteen inches long half inch thick. The jag cut in the lever is one half the thickness of the same and the shape of the reversed A letter E for holding the cutter or knife. This cutter E is fastened to the lever, B, by two screws as shown by model and drawing. The machine consists of a bed piece, A, with projection at one end as shown by model. Where the lever, B, is attached with a carriage joint and bolt, the bed piece, A, is cut out on the back side about one half the thickness, to receive the spring jaws, C, C, which holds the cue to its place when being cut. There is a groove in the block and through the bed piece for the cue to rest in. The jaws, C, C, are fastened to the bed, A, by screws, and a spring attached to the bed, A, to press the jaws, C, C, onto the cue. These jaws open to receive any size cue as shown by model and drawing.
W'hat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The application of the reversed A knife or .cutter, E, and the spring jaws, C, C, for holding the cue so it can be out olf square for the leather, these jaws will open or close to suit the size of the cues, the whole as set forth in our specification.
Placerville, Oct. 22d, 1858.
