LAMP DEVICE Filed-Feb. 23, 1945 Patented Feb. 22, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to lamp devices and more particularly to decorative lamp devices for Christmas trees and the like.
A main object of this invention is to provide a novel decorative lamp device adapted to be employed with a colored Christmas tree incandescent lamp.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel lamp holder of simple construction for holding a decorative lamp bulb and wherein a new and improved optical result is obtained.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a front elevational view of an assembled lamp holder for a Christmas tree bulb in accordance with thi invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the lamp holder of Figure l with a lamp held in operative position therein.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional View taken on line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a front elevational view of a portion of the lamp holder of Figure 1 prior to assembly.
Referring to the drawings, a lamp holder in accordance with this invention is disclosed comprising a disc member I of transparent material such as glass or plastic having a peripheral bevel 2, forming a rim adapted to reflect light transmitted in the plane of the disc member I outwardly by internal reflection so that when viewed from the front of the disc, said rim portion 2 appears to be independently illuminated.
Said disc member I. is provided with a pair of openings 3, 3 adapted to receive bindable holding strips 4, 4 provided on a lamp holding memher 5, a central aperture 6 being formed in disc I through which the body portion of a colored Christmas tree lamp bulb I is adapted to pass.
Lamp holding member is preferably formed of light bendable sheet metal and comprises a flat annular portion 8 provided with a plurality of rearwardly bent central prong elements 9 formed so as to provide a socket structure for resiliently supporting the rear portion of the glass body of a lamp I and for resiliently clamping said lamp in operative position with respect to the disc I.
To assemble the lamp holder strips 4 are bent and inserted through openings 3 in disc member I, the ends of the strips 4 being then bent inwardly to secure holding member 5 to disc member I in the position shown in Figure 3. The base of lamp bulb 'I is then inserted through the central aperture in the lamp holder until the rear portion of its glass body is resiliently clamped by prongs 9 in the position indicated in Figure 2.
When illuminated, lamp 1 will appear to have a colored ring around it due to the internal reflection occurring at beveled rim 2 of transparent disc I.
Although herein disclosed as circular, disc member I may be of any desired polygonal shape.
While a specific embodiment of a decorative Christmas tree lamp holder has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention other than as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A decorative lamp holder comprising a transparent disc member having its peripheral edge beveled, there being an opening centrally disposed and extending through said member, and a lamp holding means arranged in superposed relation with respect to said opening and mounted on said member, said means embodying a fiat annular portion provided with a centrally disposed lamp-receiving opening, disc-engaging means extending from said flat annular portion and a plurality of prong elements disposed about the edge of said portion adjacent the lamp-receiving opening and projecting rearwardly so as to provide a socket for resiliently supporting the rear portion of the lamp, whereby said beveled periphery will be illuminated by light transmitted from said lamp through said disc memher.
2. A decorative lamp holder comprising a transparent disc member having its peripheral edge beveled, there being an opening centrally disposed and extending through said member, a lamp-holding means arranged in superposed relation with respect to said opening and mounted on said member, and interengaging means for securing said lamp-holding means to said disc member, said lamp-holding means embodying a flat annular portion provided with a centrally disposed lamp-receiving opening, and a plurality of prong elements disposed about the edge of said portion adjacent the lamp-receiving opening and UNITED STATES PATENTS projecting rearwardly so as to provide a socket for resiliently supporting the rear portion of the g i lamp, whereby said beveled periphery will be 1888388 Km} 1932 illuminated by light transmitted from said lamp 5 23o1768 Wolf 1942 through said disc member.
