PANTEL-COVERING FOR COFF'INS.
.SPIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,241, dated August 2 3, 1881.
Application filed January 13, 1881.' (Model) T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residingatBrooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Panel-Coverings for Goffins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is especially adapted to coffins andcaskets constructedwith plain panels, and is a new manufacture, consisting of a set of textile or fibrous panel-coverings adapted to the outline of the panels by means of a border, as hereinafter more fully described.
Prior to my invention textile or fibrous coverings ornamented have been applied to the panels of coffins; but such coverings haveinvariably been prepared by the coffin-manufacturer whenever required, and the preparation thereof has been a source of delay, besides being attended with toogreat expense. By makin g the panel-coverings an article of manufacture I am enabled to produce the same not only with rapidity and at a comparatively low cost, but also with a betterfinish than heretofore, while at the same time the manufacturer or dealer in cofiins is enabled to obtain the panel-coverings, whenever required, ready for application to a coffin or casket without delay. In the manufacture of coffins for sale to undertakers certain different sizes are adopted, usually running from two six feet in length, and the corresponding panels are made of a uniform size.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents one of the set of panel-coverings. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a coffin, showing the panel eoverin gs applied to aportion thereof. Fig. 3 illustrates a sheet of material or web having imprinted, embossed, or embroidered on it a set ofpanels suitable for the sides and ends of a coffin or casket when the same is made with six panels, a portion of a second set being also illustrated where the web is severed.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letterIA designates the body of the coffin or casket; B, its panels, which are left plain and G, the panel-coverings, which are secured to the plain panels by cement or other suitable means.
In carrying out my invention I produce a set of panel-coverings, 0, upon a sheetof webbing, O, or other suitable textile material, the sheet of material being of any desired length, and may have upon it throughout its length, at intervals, at set of the panels as illustrated in Fig. 3. The set shown in Fig. 3 consists of six pieces, which are intended for a coffin or casket having four side panels and a panel at each end; but as coffins and caskets differ in form, I intend in some instances to make four panels constitute aset, in which instance there will be a panel for each side and one for each end of the coffin or casket.
The panels are formed on the sheet of webbing by imprinting, embossing, or embroidering thereon, in suitable design, an ornamentation such as shown atD,the same corresponding to the outlines of the coffin-panels B, and inclosing a space or area equal to the panels. The coverings can then be cut out ready for application to the coffin-panels by following the lines of ornamentation, and hence this ornamentation constitutes a border not only to decorate or set off the coverings, but also to act as a pattern or guide in cutting them out to the outlines of the panels. I also decorate the panel-coverings 0, intermediate of the border D, as shown, with ornamentation usually and preferably of similar character to that of the border.
As before stated, it is not new to cover coffins with a textile material, nor is it new to insert pieces of textile material in the panels of coflins, as such is old and well known.
The peculiarity and novelty of my invention consists in forming on a long web of material panels or sections which will correspond with the usual side and end panels of a coffin or casket, said panels or sections being delineated on the long web, as in Fig.3, by marking thereon, at intervals, a continuous embroidered or figured border, which continuous border serves not only to decorate and embellish the textile panels, but forms a guide for the workman, when cutting the panels from the Web, for use in covering the panels of the coffin or casket, as the continuous embroidered or figured border is so arranged on the web as to conform with the top and bottom and ends of the coffin or casket panels.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, I In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 10 is my hand in the presence of two subscribing The improved article of manufacture shown witnesses.
