Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEicE.
A. L. FLEURY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,622, dated July 5, 1859.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, A. L. FLEURY, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a nevv and useful Improvement in F nel-Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, made to form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in device for burning coal and other oils by means of which intense heat may be produced, Without the generation of smoke, as hereinafter described.
By reference to the accompanying dravvings Figure l is an external vievv of the lamp, a portion of the chimney being removed, in order to exhibit the arrangement of parts at the point of combustion. Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional elevation of the lamp, showing the internal arrangement of its parts, together With device for adjusting the button. The cap shown in Fig. is represented as being adjusted for use in the lamp shown by Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 3, is a sectional elevation of the lamp, to which t-he cap shown in Fig. 4 is adjusted for producing more rapid combustion and more intense heat than can be secured by the use of the cap shown in Fig. 5.
(A) is the shell or body of the lamp and is a cylinder of suitable metal, attached to and supported by a perforated base (S) and rovided with a cone shaped flue or tube (A) which extends from the base (S) to the oint of combustion, a little above the t-op of the cylinder (A) and is designed to supply oxygen to the inner portion of the flame. Surrounding this flue (A) and extending from its bottom to its top is a conoidal cylinder of quick lime (c) around Which the Wick is Wrapped. Surrounding the Wick (g) and extending from near the base of the lamlp (leaving sufficient room for the admission of fluid to the Wick) to near the upper part of the Wick (sufficient space being left at the top to expose the Wick thereby securing full supply of oil) is another cylinder (c) of quick lime. The interposition of the lime cylinders between the Wick and the metals is intended to prevent the carbonization of the Wick, and thereby preserve its full capillary conductive capacity. They are also intended to a certain extent to absorbv the carbonio acid from the oils and also from the combustion, as it forms and sinks into the oil receptacle. The flanged cylinder (7c) is introduced to prevent splashing of the contained liquid by motion of the lamp. The perforations (m) of the cap (a) are formed to allow a portion of the oxygen received through the perforations (a.) of the lamp shell (A) to pass up around the flame Without being forced directly into it. This cap should be used when only a moderate heat is required.
The cap (a), Fig. 4, is formed with a short perforated cylinder (n) and extending flange (11,) and is intended to confine the oxygen, as supplied from the atmosphere, through the perforations (a) to a direct cont-act with the upper part of the Wick, so as to produce the most rapid combustion. This cap (n) may be used when great heat is required.
The height of the flame may be regulated by the button which is adjustable by means of rod (e), lever (Z) and stop (72).
The lamp may be supplied With oil by means of the tube (j), Which is connected with the lower part of the lamp, and eX- tends sufliciently high to keep the fluid, by hydrostatic pressure, always at the same height in the oil receptacle. This tube is provided with a stop-cock (T) so that the supply may be shut off When required.
(B) is a chimney, and may be formed of metal or earthen substance and is intended to be used when great focal heat is desired.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is* l. The quick lime cones (c, c) or their equivalents, arranged substantially as herein described, for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the above I claim the flanged cap (a n 0W) substantially as herein described.
In testimony of which invention I have hereunto set my hand.
FR. Los. IVALDMAYER, ELIsHA ANERILL.
