This invention relates to sewing machines and the like, and more particularly to such machines for closing filled bags and having a control mechanism for placing various devices embodied in the machine in and out of service under predetermined conditions and in a desired sequence.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a filled bag closing machine, wherein a conveyor transports a filled bag having an open end up to and past a mechanism for closing the open end of the bag, with a control device capable of readily placing both the conveyor and the mechanism into active service and for successively placing the mechanism and the conveyor out of service under certain conditions.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine of the character indicated with a control apparatus for manually placing various devices of the machine in service and for subsequently automatically placing those devices out of service in a desired sequence and under predetermined conditions.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved sewing machine or the like ,for closing a filled bag or other article, which machine performs its intended functions in an effective, efi'icient and trouble-free manner,

Both the bag closing mechanism and the conveyor are vertically. adjustable. in order to accommodate various sizes of. filled bags. A single prime mover, preferablyan electric motor, operates a double clutch arrangement for successively placing the conveyor and bag closing mechanism into active service and for subsequently successively placing the bag closing mechanism and the conveyor out of active service. This double clutch arrangement is responsive to movement of a member such as a rotary shaft; Upon predetermined rotation of this shaft in one direction, the conveyor and bag closing mechanism are successively placed in service; Upon subsequent rotationof thisshaft in a reverse direction the bag closing mechanism and conveyor are successively placed out of service.
An arrangement of devices controls the operation of the above mentioned shaft and includes a foot treadle adapted to be depressed, thereby rotating the shaft in a direction to place the conveyor and sewing machine successively into service. Upon release of the foot treadle,,the shaft is automatically rotated to a predetermined extent in a reverse direction, whereby the double clutch arrangement is actuatedin a manner to place only the bag closing mechanism out of service. Suitable releasable detent means prevent further rotation of the shaft in thereverse direction. An element secured to the detent means extends into the path of travel of a filled bag on the conveyor. I When the filled bag in-the course of its travel onthe conveyor bears against this elc ment, itact'uates the latter, causing release of the detent means and thereby allowing continued rotational movement of the shaft in the reverse direction with the result that the clutch arrangement is actuated in a manner to place the conveyor out of service. v With the above and other-objects in view, the invention comprises the devices, combinations and arrangements of parts set forth-in the follow ing detailed description and illustrated in the annexed drawings of a preferred embodiment of the invention, from which the several features of the invention. together with the advantages attainable thereby, will be readily understood by persons skilledin the art.

Rotation of shaft 2i is transmitted by drive pulley 28 and a belt 29 to combined pulley and lower female clutch member 35. Combined pulley and female clutch member 30 is freely slidable along and rotatable about the axis of a vertical shaft 3|. A lower male clutch member 32 is secured by a set screw 33 to the upper portion of shaft 3!. Shaft 3iv extends through a cover 35 and carries at its upper end an upper male clutch member 36 that is adapted'to be moved into and out of engage-' ment with an upper female clutch member 31, coupled by a connector 38 and a set screw 39 to the lower end of a shaft All. It will be noted that shafts 3| and 40 are co-axial. Apulley ll, amxed to the upper portion of shaft Ml, drives a sewing machine pulley 26 through the medium of a V-belt 42 (Figure 1).
A depending L-shaped bracket 43 (Figure 2) is mounted within the confines of lower frame it and is connected by a pivot 44 to a lever 45. One end Mi of lever 45 projects into an annu ar groove 4! formed in a sleeve 48 that embraces shaft 3i and is slidable along the axis thereof. A spring v 4 thereby imparting rotation to shaft 3!. Continued movement of lever 45 in a clockwise direction next brings upper male clutch member 36 into engagement with upper female clutch member thereby imparting rotation to shaft 48 and thence, through pulley 4i and belt 42, to bag closing mechanism pulley 2.5,, whereby, mechanismi5 is placed in active service. When lever G5 is urged in a counter-clockwise direction (Figure 2) by spring 59, its end 46 moves sleeve 48 downwardly along shaft 34. At such a time upper male clutch 36 is first disengaged from upper female clutch member 3'1 and then combined pulley and lower female clutch member 30 is disengaged from lower male clutch member 32. The
clutch membersjust described and the devices for actuating the same to place them into and out of engagement may be the same or similar to thosedisclosed in the patent to F. Lutz, 1,791,419, granted February 3, 1931, to which reference is had for further details as to construction and operation.
Reference is next had to Figures 1 and 2 for details of construction of a conveyor assembly 55, which includes a frame that supports a pair of substantially parallel horizontal shafts 51', each of which carries a pulley 58 for impartin movement to a flexible endless conveyor belt 59. A leg (if; is fastened to the free end of each shaft 5] and is adjustable horizontally and vertically with re spect to its corresponding shaft as allowed by slots iii and 62, respectively. Also secured to conveyor frame 55,.is a shelf 55 having asmOQthuppcr SUI-1 face along which the under surface of conveyor belt 59 is adapted to slide with a minimum of friction during operation.
The conveyor assembly 55 may be raised and lowered at the will of the operator by, an, arrangement of devices that will now be described. Tapped lugs 66, attached to conveyor frame 56 (Figure 1), are in threaded engagementwith. vertical screw shafts 6'! that are positioned within lower frame iii. It will be noted that upon rotation of member Si in a counter-clockwise direction (Figure 2) lever 45 is actuated in a clockwise direction against the action of spring 49 to thereby place the conveyor belt 59 and the bag closing mechanism It successively into service. Actuation of member BI is controlled by devices that will now be described with particular reference to Figures 3, 4 and 5. As is shown in Figure 3, a portion of member 8I extends through aside wall 84 of a control frame 85 that includes a base 86, end walls 87 and a partial front cover 88; A connector block 89 is secured to member 8| and to a rod 90 by set screws SI and 92, respectively. One of the outstanding features of the invention resides in the provision of releasable detent means for controlling the movement of rod-90 and therefore member 8! in one direction. This detent means includes a block or dog 95 adjustably secured to rod 99, intermediate connector block 89 and foot treadle 93, by a set screw 96 and having a notch 97. A pawl 98, adapted to be placed into and out of registration with notch 91 in block 95, is adjustably attached to a pawl shaft 99 that is rotatably supported in end walls 81. A block I is adapted to be attached to pawl shaft 99 at any desired point therealong by a set screw IOI. Adjustably secured to block I00 by a set screw I02 is an upstanding rod I03 that has a block I04 attached to its upper portion by a set screw I05. The block I04 is also bored to receive a curved element or finger I06 that is maintained in desired position by a set screw I 01. It will be noted that finger I06 is disposed above conveyor belt 59 and extends into the path of travel of a filled bag B, having an open end E, that is to be closed by mechanism I6. A spring I08 is fastened at its upper end to pawl 98 by a screw I09 and at its lower end to base 86 by a screw IIO. Spring I08 is in tension and tends to normally urge pawl 98 in a clockwise direction as viewed in Figure 5. Several relative positions of dog 95 and pawl 98 are illustrated in Figures 6, '7 and 8. Figure 6 depicts the relative position of dog 95 and pawl 98 when conveyor belt 59 and bag closing mechanism I6 are idle. Dog 95 and pawl 98 are shown in locking engagement in Figure 7, this being the relative position of these elements at such times as conveyor belt 59 is in service and bag closing mechanism I6 is idle or out of service. Figure 7 shows dog 95 and pawl 98 in a relative position corresponding to that indicated in Figures 3 and 5. When both the conveyor belt 59 and bag closing mechanism I6 are in service, dog 95 and pawl 98 assume the relative position shown in Figure 8.
For the purpose of briefly discussing the mode of operation of the machine, it is first assumed that electric motor 25 is in continuous operation thereby imparting rotation to combined pulley and lower female clutch member 30 through the medium of shaft 21, pulley 28 and belt 29. Let us next assume that lever 45 is in the relative position shown in Figure 2, that both bag closing mechanism I6 and endless conveyor belt 59 are out of service, and that a filled bag is on the conveyor assembly 55 in a position ready to be closed. The operator depresses foot treadle 93 imparting rotation to member 8|, thereby rotating lever 45 in a counter-clockwise direction (Figure 2) against the action of spring 49. As end -46 of lever 45 moves upwardly, it carries with it sleeve 48 which moves combined pulley and lower female clutch member 30 upwardly into engagement with lower male clutch member 32, causing shaft'3I to rotate which in turn imparts movement to conveyor belt 59 through horizontal shaft 16, sprocket wheel 'II, endless chain 80, sprocket wheel 19, and conveyor pulleys 58, in the order named. Continued upward movement of sleeve 48 correspondingly moves upper male clutch member 36 into engagement with upper female clutch member 3'! and imparting rotation to shaft 40 to thereby place bag closing mechanism i6 into service through the medium of pulley 4I, belt 42 and pulley 26 in the order named. With bag closing mechanism I6 and conveyor belt 59 thus in service, the bag is moved along the conveyor assembly 55 and simultaneously stitched or otherwise closed by mechanism I6. As soon as the bag closing operation is completed, the operator releases foot treadle 93 which is moved upwardly by member 8! due to the action of spring 49, lever 45 simultaneously being urged in a counter-clockwise direction (Figure 2), sleeve 48 moving down wardly permitting disengagement between upper male clutch member 36 and upper female clutch member 31 to place bag closing mechanism I6 out of service. At this timeupward movement of rod is arrested by the detent means due to the locking engagement of pawl 98 with dog as indicated in Figures 3, 5 and 7. This permits continued operation of the conveyor assembly,
Under the conditions just described, conveyor belt 59 continues to move in the direction indicated by the arrow until the next filled bag carried thereon strikes finger I06, swinging rod I03 in a direction away from the conveyor belt and imparting sufiicient rotation to shaft 99 to rotate pawl 98 out of notch 91 against the action of spring I08. The detent means being thus released, rod 90 continues to move upwardly through its connections with spring 49, thereby permitting continued rotation of lever 45 in a counterclockwise direction (Figure 2) to permit disengagement between combined pulley and lower female clutch 30 and lower male clutch member 32, thereby placing the conveyor assembly 55 out of service. Theabove described cycle of operation is then repeated.
Although the invention has been herein shown and described in simple and practicable form, it is recognized that certain parts or elements thereof are representative of other parts or elements which may be used in substantially the same manner to accomplish substantially the same results. Therefore, it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the exact details described herein, but is to be ac-. corded the full scope and protection of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In apparatus of the character described, a conveyor adapted to carry a bag having an open end, a mechanism for closing said open end of said bag, a first driving means for actuating said conveyor, a second driving means for actuating said mechanism, a member movable in opposite directions, means for imparting movement to said member in one direction, means for imparte ing movement to said member in a reverse direction, means responsive to predetermined movement of said member in opposite directions for placing both of said driving means. respee.

In apparatus of the character described, a conveyor adapted to carry a bag havingan open end, a mechanism for closing said open end of said bag, a first driving means for actuating said conveyor, a second driving means for actuating said mechanism, a member movable in opposite directions; means for imparting movement to said. member in one direction, means for imparting movement to said member in a reverse direction, means responsive to predetermined movement of said member in one direction for placing said first driving means and said second driving means successively into service, said last mentioned means being responsive to predetermined movement of said member in a reverse direction for placing said second driving means and said'first driving means successively out of service, and detent means normally permitting sufiicient movement or said member in said reverse direction to place only said second driving means out of service, said detent means being adapted to be released by said bag in the course of its travel on said conveyor to allow continued movement of said member in said reverse direction to place said first driving means out of service.
3. In apparatus of the character described, a conveyor adapted to carry a bag having an open end, a mechanism for closing said open end of said bag, a first driving means for actuating said conveyor, a second driving means for actuating said mechanism, a rotary member, means for imparting rotational movement to said member in one direction, means for normally and yieldingly imparting rotational movement to said member in a reverse direction, means responsive to predetermined rotational movement of said member in one direction for placing said first driving means and second driving means successively into service, said last mentioned means being responsive to a predetermined rotational movement of said member in a reverse direction forplacing said second driving means and said first driving means successively out of service, and detent means normally permitting sufficient movement of said member in said reverse direction to place only said driving means out of service, said detent means being adapted to be released by said bag in the course of its travel on said conveyor to allow continued rotational movement of said member in said reverse direction to place said first driving means out of service.
4. In apparatus of the character described, a conveyor adapted to carry a bag having an open end, a mechanism for closing said open end of said bag, a first driving means for actuating said conveyor, a second driving means for actuating said mechanism, a rotary member, means for imparting rotational movement to said member in one direction, means for imparting rotational movement to said member in a reverse direction, means responsive to predetermined rotational movement of said member in one direction for placing said first driving means and said second driving means successively into service, said last mentioned means being responsive to predetermined rotational movement of said member in 8 a, re erse direction for placing said second drivf-' ing means and said first driving means successively out of service, detent means normally permitting suificient movement of said member in said reverse direction to place only said second driving means out of service, and means for releasing said detent means comprising a device connected to said, detent means and extending into the path of travel of said bag on said conveyor, said device being adapted to be actuated by said bag in the course of its travel on said conveyor to releasesaid detent means and allow continued rotational movement of said member in said reverse direction to place said first driving means out of service.
5. In apparatus of the character described, a conveyor adapted to carry a bag having an open end, a mechanism for closing said open end of said bag, afirst driving means for actuating said conveyor, a second driving means for actuating said mechanism, a rotary member, means for imparting rotational movement to said memberin one direction, means for imparting rotational movement to said member in a reverse, direction, means responsive to, predetermined rotational movement of said member in one direction for placing said first driving means andsaid second driving means successively into service, said last mentioned means being responsive to predetermined rotational movement of said member in a reverse direction for placing said second driving means andsaid first driving means successively out of service, detent means normally permitting sufficient movement of said member in said re verse direction to place. only said second driving means out of service, and means for releasing said detent means comprising a device connected to said detent means, resilient means for normally and yieldingly maintaining a portion of said device in the path of travel of said bag, said portion of said device being adapted to be actuated by said bag in the course of itstravel on said conveyor to release said detent means against the action of said resilient means to thereby allow continued rotational movement of said member in said reverse direction to place said first driving means out of service.
6-. In apparatus of the character described a conveyor adapted to carry a bag having an open end, a mechanism for closing said open end of said bag, a first driving means for actuating said conveyor, a second driving means for actuating said mechanism, a rotary member, means including an arm for imparting rotational movement to said member in one direction, means for normally and yieldingly urgin said member in a reverse direction, means responsive to predetermined rotational movement of said member in said one direction for placing said first driving means and said second driving means successively into service, said last mentioned means being responsive to predetermined rotational movement of said member in a reverse direction for placing said second driving means and said first driving means successively out of service, and detent means comprising an element carried by said arm and a pawl movable into and out of locking engagement with said element for normally permitting such movement of said member in said reverse direction to place only said sec- 0nd driving means out of service, said detent means being adapted to be released by said bag in the course of its travel on said conveyor to 76 allow continued rotational movement of said member in said reverse direction to place said first driving means outof service.
7. In apparatus of the character described, a

In apparatus of the character described, a conveyor adapted to carry a bag having an open end, a mechanism for closing said open end of said bag, a first driving means for actuating said conveyor, a second driving means for actuating said mechanism, a rotary member, means including an arm for imparting rotational movement to said member in one direction, means for normally and yieldingly urging said member in a reverse direction, means responsive to predetermined rotational movement of said member in said one direction for placing said first driving means and said second driving means successively into service, said last mentioned means being responsive to predetermined rotational movement of said member in a reverse direction for placing said second driving means and said first driving means successively out of service, detent means comprising an element carried by said arm and a pawl movable into and out of locking engagement with said element for normally permitting such movement of said member in said reverse direction to piace only said second driving means out of service, means for releasing said detent means comprising a device connected to said pawl, resilient means for normally and yieldingly maintaining a portion of said device in the path of travel of said bag, said portion of said device being adapted to be actuated by said bag in the course of its travel on said conveyor to disengage said pawl from said element against the action of said resilient means to thereby allow continued rotational movement of said member in said reverse direction to place said first driving means out of service.
9. In apparatus of the character described, a conveyor adapted to carry an article along a substantially horizontal path, driving means for said conveyor, movable connector means for placing said driving means and said conveyor into and 10 out: of operative engagement,- actuating ,:means including a first rotary shaft for imparting movement to said. connector means, a second rotary shaft, detent means comprising a notched element rotatable with one of said shafts and a pawl rotatable with the other of said shafts, said pawl engaging the notched portion of. said element when'saidfirst shaft is in a predetermined angular. position, and a device secured to'and rotatable with said second shaft and extending into the path of travel of said article on said; conveyor, said-device being adapted to, be actuated by said article in the course of itstravel-on said conveyor tcimpart rotation to said second shaft andto effect relative movement between said element and said pawl. In apparatus of the character described, a conveyor adapted to carry an article along a substantially horizontal path, driving means for said conveyor, movable connector means for placing said driving means and said conveyor into and out of operative engagement, actuating means including a first rotary shaft and resilient means for respectively imparting movement to said connector means in one direction and in a reverse direction, a second rotary shaft, releasable detent means coacting with said actuating means for maintaining said connector means in a position to effect operative engagement between said driving means and said conveyor, said detent means comprising a notched element rotatable with said first shaft and a pawl rotatable with said second shaft, and a device secured to and rotatable with said second shaft and extending into the path of travel of said article on said conveyor, said device being adapted to be actuated by said article in the course of its travel on said conveyor to impart rotation to said second shaft and effect removal of said pawl from the notched portion of said element.
12.
